A REPORT ON
INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO M.P. WIND FARMS BY THE
STUDENTS OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS
ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
Venue: Dewas
Date: 08/03/2014

INTRODUCTION
In this era of depleting non-renewable resources, technology has to adapt according to
it and think of more innovative and eco-friendly ideas for power generation. One of them
being wind energy, although it is used throughout the world but still comprises of a small
percentage of global power generation. Many of the largest operational onshore wind
farms are located in the United States and China. For example, the Gansu Wind
Farm in China has a capacity of over 5,000 MW of power with a goal of 20,000 MW by
2020. In India development of wind power began in the 1990s, and has significantly
increased in the last few years. Although a relative newcomer to the wind industry
compared with Denmark or the United States, India has the fifth largest installed wind
power capacity in the world.[1] In 2009-10 India's growth rate was highest among the
other top four countries. Wind power accounts for 8.5% of India's total installed power
capacity, and it generates 1.6% of the country's power.

MADHYA PRADESH (386 MW)

In consideration of unique concept, Govt. of Madhya Pradesh has sanctioned another
15 MW project to Madhya Pradesh Wind farms Ltd. MPWL, Bhopal at Nagda Hills near
Dewas under consultation from Consolidated Energy Consultants Ltd. CECL Bhopal.
We had the privilege of visiting one of these wind farm in Dewas district which makes an
a annual power of 1.84 Mw.

TECHNICAL DISCRIPTION
On the trip we were guided by Mr. A.K. Bhaumik, he explained us about the overall
process of wind utilization, power generation, structure, transmission and receiving. We
also did step into a windmill to study the various measuring devices, startup panels, and
safety mechanism.
The following are some of the key points he pointed out for us: It was setup in 1995, the parts were imported from Denmark.
The power plant gives a total generation of 300,000 units per annum.
For one rotation of blade shaft the rotor of generator rotated 40 times, using gear
system.
Generator rating- 225kW
Wind speed range -2.5m/sec to 18 m/sec, after this limit the safety mechanism
for the rotor would break the rotors, as beyond this speed it can inflict damage on
itself and the generator.
The casing was made out of iron.
Each wind turbine has 2m base dia., 30 m height ,13m long blades(3 Blades)
Blade material- Aluminum and composite materials/fillers.
Installation cost per wind turbine- Rs.11,000,000
There are 58 such wind turbines.
Annual maintenance cost-2% of initial cost.
Every generator has its own auxiliary transformer 315 KVA, all of which then I
transferred to a central grid for the wind farm, which then transfers it to nearest
substation for distribution.

He also mentioned that this setup will only be working till 2016 after which the
30m wind turbines will be replaced by 50 wind turbines, hence increasing the
total output generated significantly.

FEEDBACK
The educational visit proved to be very beneficial for us. We came to know
about the power generation through wind mills. The working action of wind
mills were very well explained by the staff member. He gave an elaborate
description of the constructional and working features of the wind mills. He
also informed us about its establishment and maintenance procedures.

This type of visit should be conducted on regular basis and some more
modification should be done in industrial training, few of them are enlisted
below Companies should be invited to offer training to the students of prefinal year of various departments in the campus itself, whose
selection criteria should be based on the personal interview.
Industrial collaboration should be made by the college to provide
better exposure to the practical outside world. This would enhance
the growth of student as well as that of college.
This type of industrial visit and training would help the students to
apply their knowledge to practical areas.
