Samsung

Samsung is a South Korean multinational conglomerate

company headquartered in Samsung Town, Seoul. It comprises
numerous subsidiaries and affiliated businesses, most of them
united under the Samsung brand, and is the largest South
Korean business corporation.
Samsung Electronics is part of one of the largest multi-billion
dollar corporations in the world.

History
Byung-chul Lee founded Samsung on March 1,1938 as a trading
company. The company started as a food exporter in Korea and
shipped items like dried fish and flour to China. Samsung got
into other businesses throughout the 1950s and 1960s,
including life insurance and textiles. Samsung entered the
electronics industry in the late 1960s and the construction and
shipbuilding industries in the mid-1970s.
Notable Samsung industrial subsidiaries include Samsung
Electronics (the world's largest information technology
company measured by 2012 revenues, and 4th in market
value), Samsung Heavy Industries (the world's 2nd-largest
shipbuilder measured by 2010 revenues), and Samsung
Engineering and Samsung C&T (respectively the world's 13th
and 36th-largest construction companies). Other notable
subsidiaries include Samsung Life Insurance (the world's
14th-largest life insurance company), Samsung Everland
(operator of Everland Resort, the oldest theme park in South
Korea) and Cheil Worldwide (the world's 15th-largest
advertising agency measured by 2012 revenues).

Samsung Electronics
Samsung Electronics, the crown jewel of the Samsung Group,
has three main business lines: mobile devices like smartphones
and tablets; consumer electronics like televisions and home
appliances; and electronics components like semiconductors and
display panels.

Samsung Electronics started in 1969 and its first black

and white TV went on sale in 1970. Samsung has been the
world's largest manufacturer of LCD panels since 2002, the
world's largest television manufacturer since 2006, and world's
largest manufacturer of mobile phones since 2011. Samsung
Electronics displaced Apple Inc. as the world's largest
technology company in 2011 and is a major part of the South
Korean economy.
Smartphones are Samsungs most-well-known products, and as
recently as a year ago the mobile division accounted for 76% of
the companys overall operating profits. Whats more, Samsung
stuffs its handsets with lots of its own components, so every
smartphone sale lets the company ring up hefty sales of parts.
Competition from rival handset makers has eroded Samsungs
market share, and now smartphone profits account for less than
half the companys total.
Samsung walks the walk and is now the established leader in
consumer electronics, providing a range of leading-edge
premium products and, in their own words, leading the digital
convergence revolution. In so doing Samsung has become
Asia's most valuable technology company.
