Answers must be accurate to within 3 significant figures!

Problem 1: Consider the linear machine shown below.

Find the initial starting force magnitude and final speed if the length of the bar (l) is 0.3 m, VT is
10 V, RA is 0.2 , and the magnetic field is 1.5 T. (10 points)

Problem 2: Now assume that a force is applied such that the bar is moving at a velocity of 30
m/s to the right. Find the power associated with the battery and the power associated with the
bar. Use positive for power absorbed, negative for power generated. (10 points)

Problem 3: A shunt-connected dc motor has the magnetization curve shown with VT = 330 V,
RA = 3 , and RF+Radj = 160 .

Problem 4: Assume that you have a DC motor with the following magnetization curve over the
operation range of interest and with RF Radj 15 and RA 2 . Assume that the motor is

in the shunt configuration with VT 95 V as shown below. Find the speed and torque
developed when the power delivered by the motor is 100 W and there are no rotational losses
given the motor is operating in its normal operating range. (20 points)

Problem 5: VT = 210 V is applied to a shunt connected DC motor with Radj set so that IF = 9 A.
For the motor, RA = 1 and RF = 20 . The motor needs to supply a torque of 150 Nm and has
rotational losses equivalent to 20 Nm of torque. Determine the motor speed and value of Radj.

the new torque supplied is 200 Nm instead of 150 Nm. What is the new speed? (10 points)
