Claim 3

Photovoltaic cells are made of special materials called semiconductors such as silicon, which is
currently used most commonly. Basically, when light strikes the cell, a certain portion of it is
absorbed within the semiconductor material. This means that the energy of the absorbed light is
transferred to the semiconductor. The energy knocks electrons loose, allowing them to flow
freely. PV cells also all have one or more electric field that acts to force electrons freed by light
absorption to flow in a certain direction. This flow of electrons is a current, and by placing metal
contacts on the top and bottom of the PV cell, we can draw that current off for external use, say,
to power a calculator. This current, together with the cell's voltage (which is a result of its builtin electric field or fields), defines the power (or wattage) that the solar cell can produce.
(Toothman & Aldous, n.d.). This means that solar cells work through the suns rays hitting the
semiconductors, commonly silicon. Then the electrons from the rays are then knocked off,
allowing them to flow freely. The flow from the knocked electrons generates electricity. An
example of this is how some calculators has little solar panels. They operate the same just in a
small scale.
Claim 5
According to Sandra Ariskan (Ariskan, n.d.), solar energy is environmental friendly because it
avoids natural sources depletion, it avoid harmful emissions, and avoid pollution. This means
that solar energy through solar panel helps us because it can preserve some of the natural sources
like oil and coal, because after 40 years our oil will ran out. Solar panels also doesnt emit
harmful emissions unlike coals which is responsible for one-third of the nitrogen oxide emissions
and two-thirds of sulfur dioxide emissions. Solar panels also doesnt pollute as much unlike coals
which is the biggest mercury polluter. For example, in Germany it is mandated that the houses
should have solar panels in order to save the environment and generate extra energy.

Claim 1
Solar energy is energy derived from the Suns radiation. The Sun is a powerful source of energy
and provides the Earth with as much energy every hour as we collectively use in a year
worldwide. It is important that we continue to harness and increase our use of solar energy (and
other clean, renewable energies) as fossil fuels become depleted, expensive, and fall out of favor
with their consumers. As the global demand for energy grows and conventional energy resources
become increasingly costly to extract, people are looking to the power of the Sun. (Mosaic, n.d.)
This means that solar energy is essential to us in the future because with it we can harness the
energy from the sun so that we would use less of other harmful energy sources like coal or oil.
For example with the help of solar panels we can lessen our dependency on fossil fuels.
