Course Description: This course deals with overview of nursing as a science, an art and a
profession. It deals with the concept of man as a holistic being comprised of bio-psycho-socio and
spiritual dimensions. It includes a discussion on the different roles of a nurse emphasizing health
promotion, maintenance of health as well as prevention of illness utilizing the nursing process. It
includes the basic nursing skills needed in the care of individual clients.
Contact Hours/Sem: 54 hours lecture (3 units)
Prerequsite: General Chemistry, Theoretical Foundations of Nursing
Placement: 1st Year, 2nd Semester

Course Objectives: At the end of the course, and given actual or simulated situations, the student
should be able to:
1. Utilize the nursing process in the care of individuals, families and
communities.
2. Communicate effectively with patients/clients, families as well as other
members of the health team in various settings.
3. Demonstrate leadership and management skills to ensure safe and quality
nursing
care.
4. Relate effectively with others in work situations.
5. Utilize concepts, theories, and principles in the care of clients.
6. Ensure a well-organized, accurate recording and reporting system.
7. Participate in research activities and utilizes research findings to improve
nursing
practice.
8. Observe ethico-moral values and legal responsibilities in nursing care.
9. Assumes responsibility for personal and professional growth.
