Editorial

Dear Castoliner
In this edition of Spirit,
we highlight the investments and developments
within the Castolin Eutectic Group associated with
our strategy of penetrating new markets. Our
history is built on always
developing new markets
and growing. These new
markets can be regional,
new industries, new segments (like Services) or
new technologies with
new products.
As we are all aware, our
world is getting smaller
and more interconnected
every day. This global
nature of our wear protection and specialist
joining world means that
our solutions are needed
not only in developed
countries, but also in developing countries. We
highlight our developing
businesses in the Middle
East and our ambitions
for the new Services plant
in Dubai. Our new applications and industries are
really offering new technical solutions and services
to new customers.

Leveraging our investments to solve

customer problems and grow sales

EuroBlech, International Sheet Metal Working Tradeshow in Hanover, Germany, 21 - 25

October 2014. Castolin presented its laser cladding services, new XuperArc and CastoMIG
welding machines and MicroGAP. The tradeshow brought together 1,573 exhibitors from
38 countries and almost 60.000 visitors.

Good examples are given here in the power generation business with our BTC boiler coating solutions. These are
solving complex wear and corrosion problems in Waste Incineration boilers and also in the Steel industry. Examples
of large and successful projects in France and Canada reflect the strong teamwork between countries today. The advanced technologies of BTC, Laser Cladding and HD8 are helping to gain new sales in cement, steel and oil industries.
New product developments also help us to move into new markets. The examples are the new Plasma Transferred
Arc equipment from Poland, plus the new XuperArc and CastoMIG Welding equipment ranges, which were exhibited
at the prestigious EuroBlech fair recently (above photo). The new Maraging electrodes, XuperPhos brazing alloys and
Distribution equipment are products that can open doors and new markets for us. The investments in R&D, Marketing
and Nevax reported reinforce our reputation and brands.
As you will see, there are lots of new initiatives and investments in the Castolin Eutectic Group. It is crucial that these
are leveraged to best help our customers solve problems, and for us to grow in sales. Communication and training
are essential here. The salesmen training in Italy, Canada and in the specialist welding and brazing groups underlines
this commitment from the Group.

Bill McDougall, CEO OilTec

Products: 39 years with
Castolin in 63 countries
Simona: How are future prospects for Castolin OilTec Services in Dubai?
Bill: Excellent! Growing by the day. We have more than doubled our sales and are to
triple our sales this year.
Simona: What services do we provide to our customers in Oil industry in Dubai?
Bill: In Dubai we will be doing mud rotors, drilling mandrels, knocker housings, and
probably next year we will also be doing laser cladding for non-magnetic steels.
Simona: How do we prolong the service life of mud rotors?
Bill: We replace hard chrome with tungsten carbide, which is then densified with
our own proprietory materials.
Simona: And how do we prolong the service life of the other parts, such as stabilisers, drill bits etc.?
Bill: For stabilisers we have different systems, depending on the drilling conditions.
We use either tiles and powder, composite rods, our exi rope made in France, so
there are different options. Or we use automated plasma transfered arc coatings
and automated laser coating with tungsten carbide.

R&D lab established in Dubai workshop

Simona: What are the main strengths of the new DrillTec product range?
Bill: We cover everything on the bottom hole assembly so any problem you have, we
have a product and a solution for it.
Simona: And what is unique about the OTW hardbanding range?
Bill: It is unique, because it is the first range specially designed to protect the drilling
casing, and we have a new product, 13CF, which gives you more casing wear, but
very high wear resistance as well. The product is in approval, and it's been widely
accepted in the US, in Europe and now in the Middle East as well.
Simona: In the future, the focus will be more on services than on products?
Bill: It will be a combination of the two, because in the OilTec division we have lot of
clients, who do their own hardfacing, most of the clients do their own hardbanding
or manufacture their own equipment. So on the downhole side , we offer a combination of material supply, products and services.
Simona: What is the happiest memory you have about the company?
Bill: In 39 years with Castolin, too many! The list is very long. I have worked for Castolin in 63 countries on all continents!

National Sales Meeting in
Eutectic Canada
September 2014 was a busy month for Eutectic Canada, with a lineup of
training sessions and social events.
In mid-September, the company hosted a three-day training session in its
HQ in Vaudreuil, Quebec. Fifteen Technical Sales Representatives (TSR) and
Business Managers from across Canada attended this interactive training,
where they had the chance to demo a variety of welding products and test
coating equipment. Following comprehensive presentations that covered
Castolin Eutectic latest technologies, the group of TSRs moved to the Services workshop to get their hands dirty and put theory into practice. And
before the Canadian backyard was covered in snow, Eutectic Canada employees got together in their manufacturing plant in Granby to enjoy an
outdoor picnic and celebrate the service anniversary of its loyal personnel.
A quick plant tour unveiled the initial installation of the gas atomizer, the
manufacturing of wires of different diameters and the robotized production of CDP wearplates, among other things.p

New comprehensive XuperPhos brazing alloys

Xuper PLUS CuP/CuPAg

Following the Castolin tradition of innovation, and our

exclusive range of low temperature brazing alloys, we
now present a complete range of CuP brazing alloys for
safe and reliable Copper joining applications. All of these
alloys are produced under our certified manufacturing
process according to ISO 17672.

This alloy formulation assures the highest fluidity. This alloy is perfect for brazing capillary
or close fitting joints with a larger surface area
where little or no finishing is required.

Xuper CuP/CuPAg
This formulation provides the lowest fluidity of the three
alloys. This high viscosity feature is ideal when trying to
restrict the wetting and flow on wide gap joints or small
surface areas.

Xuper PREMIUM CuP/CuPAg

The is the highest quality brazing alloy in the CuP
range. Its unique melting characteristics provide
variable viscosity and flow control affording the
operator ease-of-use. The alloy is easy to work
with a very smooth wetting action which is particularly suitable for problematic joints with difficult access.

>> BTC solution extends

Electric Arc Furnace
lifetime in Steel plant

Two hundred forty kilos of BTW 55, an iron-based alloy resistant to erosion and corrosion,
were used to treat a total surface of 400ft 2.

In September 2014, Eutectic Canada

successfully completed an on-site job
at a steel manufacturing plant located
in Quebec. Before commissioning, the
customer wanted to protect two new
OEM parts in order to extend their
service life and reduce plant downtime
costs.
Our mobile Eutectic Services team
spent five days at the customers site
to coat two elbows of an Electric Arc
Furnace (EAF) used in the steel making process. The interior surface of the
elbows was arc sprayed with BTC 252,
a proprietary solution that combines
arc wire spray and a densification process that is only available through our
Services workshops.

Eutectic BTC protective coatings significantly extend the service life of new
and worn components, making them
last longer than uncoated parts. BTC
coatings are a more cost-effective solution than replacement of the worn
parts and offer direct savings in materials and valuable reductions in downtime.
The BTC solution is chosen to resist
against the specific conditions of the
corrosive and/or erosive environment.
into four building sections.
Arc spraying the interior of
Electric Arc Furnace elbow

For this BTC job, 240kg of BTW 55 were

needed to protect a surface of 400ft2
against corrosion and abrasion, the
main cause of wear associated with
this application. The elbows were new
OEM parts that have never been in
service before and have an estimated
service life of two months. We expect
to extend the wear life of each OEM
part from two to ten months.
New OEM elbows were coated with Eutectic BTC solution to extend their service life from 2 to 10 months.

New training facility in

Milan for Salteco
Salteco, the Italian distributor
of Castolin products, is happy to
announce the opening of a new
training facility in Milan.
The name given to this new area
is saldamente that has double
meaning: salda which comes
from the Italian word "saldatura"
= welding and mente that means
brain.
Saldamente is simultaneously an
Italian word which also means
powerful, because knowledge
makes you strong!
Our Italian distributor offers one
day training courses on: MMA
welding, TIG welding and brazing with a final TUV certificate for
niche distribution (Finteco spa)
and for industry (Salteco spa).
Before coming to a Saldamente
training course, the participant

Spirit n19 - December 2014 |

should buy a special kit with dedicated consumables and accessories related to the course (eg. to
attend a TIG welding course, the
participant has to buy a welding
mask and a pair of TIG gloves
beforehand)
The second goal of the training
school is the training of our own
salesforce by letting the technical
delegate practice himself.
In September 2014 Salteco had
a general salesmen meeting and
the participants spent half day in
saldamente to experiment with
the new XuperArc and CastoMig
welding equipment and the new
electrodes XHD 6860 and 6855.
"We have the knowledge, we have
the competence, now we also
have a nice location to train the
new generation of welders!" says
Laura Salvetti, Salteco Marketing
Manager.

>> New Distributor in Chile

From left to right: Gonzalo Guzmn (Line manager Eutectic USA), Manuel Monteiro (General Manager Eutectic Bresil), Carlos Esteves (Sales & Marketing Director Eutectic Corporation),Sebastin Otero (Operations manager Otero),
John Kirkwood (CEO Eutectic Corporation) y Germn Guerrero (Commercial Manager Otero).

Aceros Otero has served as a distributor to Eutectic Castolin for Chile since March 2014. Aceros Otero is part of a Chilean business
group founded in 1963 by Patricio Otero F. The Group has over 50 years' experience in the market, having consolidated a prominent position as one of the country's leading industrial suppliers, through its companies, Aceros Otero, Serviper and Hey! Lease.
The relationship with Eutectic is in its early stages but it is astounding how quickly Aceros Otero is adapting to the Eutectic culture.
This is also down to the management team made up of people like Gonzalo Guzman, Line Manager for Eutectic Castolin. The first
week of June 2014 marked the first coating service job that Eutectic Castolin performed since Aceros Otero represents the company
in Chile. This type of work involves important technical complexities and logistics management. The team included Jos Manuel
Arancibia, dealing with the process, and Rodrigo Cuevas, dealing with the customer. The component requiring wear protection was
a smooth conveyor roller of a paper machine. This pulls newspapers in the final production stage for rolling onto 2 tonne spools.
Given its significant size (8 metres long, 900 mm in diameter and weighing 5 tonnes) and high cost, no spare parts are
available. Not only is the option of a new component extremely expensive but it also takes months for one to be produced in Germany. Therefore, confronted with high wear issues, the customer - a leading paper company in Concepcin - opted for a solution that Eutectic Castolin could provide given their vast experience in the industry.

Coating with ARC Spray - Wire 593T

Four years ago Eutectic started reconsidering a solution for
the wear-protection of rollers in paper industry. The HVOF
coating process had been employed until then, but a more
cost-effective alternative was required. Further to thorough
research and testing at our USA Services workshop, Jos
Manuel Arancibia, Gonzalo Guzmn and Rodrigo Cuevas
devised this solution: ARC SPRAY with similar hardness, the
same roughness, but not as expensive. The first undertaking was the acid test and, to date, one dozen rollers have
been refurbished with the same application and a 2 year
guarantee provided. It should be noted that the rollers require specific roughness of between 8 and 14 microns Ra
as they are used to pull paper and the roughness must be
accurate.

Arc spraying massive roller in Paper industry

The roller to be reclaimed in June 2014 was for a paper company in Concepcin. To apply this solution, the roller had to
be sent to Santiago which involved a careful and complex
procedure given the size and weight of the component.
This was no easy task as the roller had been refurbished
before. Grinding took 3 times longer than usual and, as it
was raining in Santiago, the work had to be carried out as
swiftly as possible, since damp causes rusting. The task was
completed successfully despite the weather conditions, and
the roller was returned to Concepcin ready to be mounted
and operate.

>> 1,000 Boiler Tubes coated

for 900,000 Euros in France
Didier Matiuzzi, Business Manager for Boiler applications in Castolin France, tells the story of a big project
successfully completed due to good collaboration between colleagues from France and Belgium.

"

The project began with a wear problem faced by a waste incineration

client (Semardel Group, Paris), but he was open to multiple subcontractors, including Castolin. In the quest of the best solution, he proposed all
suppliers to install their tests. He paid for them, so we installed a few boiler tubes at their premises four years ago to test our solution. These tubes
were installed on average temperature superheaters, but they are special
superheaters because of their size: just one panel includes 400 tubes, so
its a fairly massive installation. The competitor did the same and each
year we checked the evolution. Finally it turned out our alloys were not
losing at all from their thickness - the alloy we applied was 8995CH. After
four years, Castolin had the best results and the client launched a tender,
which Castolin won, eliminating Oerlikon Metco, a big global player, from
the competition.
When the production stage came, we had to split it into two workshops,
because it was too many tubes for one workshop given the time constraints.
The Belgian Castolin Services team in Enghien took the lead. The tubes have
been produced and afterwards the boilermaker (our real customer) manufactured superheater panels and welded them on the manifold. Castolin
Services were sollicited again to protect the welded joints on the manifold.
We had two teams in place, who worked in shifts during 10 days to do
the weld protection with CastoDyn DS 8000 or SuperJet-S-torch - the right
process chosen at the right time. In total eight tons of specially developed
powder from our CEIL Supply Centre have been deposited: 300 kg for finishing and the rest for boiler tubes protection. The coating was completed in
late September, when the final touches were made, and in October the superheater panels were installed in the boiler. Then I went on-site to see. The
panels are measuring 6m high and 4m wide, so quite large and very heavy.
So I was interested to see how they managed to get them into the boiler. The
client premises are at Vaire-le-grand, 30 km from Castolin France.

>> Our Focus applications

HD8 for cement and
mining industries
HD8 is an extremely wear-resistant coating made
with an innovative, high-deposition welding technique. This coating has been specifically developed
by our engineers in Wiener Neudorf who aimed to
get a very high density of tungsten carbides homogeneously distributed within a nickel-based matrix
at high deposition rates. The critical parameters
of the process, in particular the temperature, are
automatically controlled in order to avoid severe
carbide dissolution as it may happen in standard
welding techniques. Furthermore, the coating is
optimized with a low dilution and consequently the
overlay chemistry is not negatively affected by the
base material. The wear resistance is far superior
than steel hardened plates or usual chromium carbide wearplates as it is measured with ASTM G65
test.

exposed to extreme erosion and have to be regularly

replaced. HD8 increases service life and consequently
reduces the costs associated to new parts and changeovers in high demanding industries such as for instance
mining, power generation or cement.

Ideal for extremely demanding applications

Case study

With its extreme wear-resistance, smooth and regular surface HD8 is the ideal solution for applications
where standard chromium carbides wearplates are
too heavy and not resistant enough, in particular
where large production throughput is required.
For instance, expensive heavy duty
fans are

Wear was so severe in the separator cone and roller

mill casing of an Austrian cement plant that standard
wearplates were not lasting more than 8 months. After
HD8 had shown very good results during a field test
conducted at the end of 2013, the customer ordered
the complete lining of his equipment. The project has
been designed with Autodesk Inventor 3D by our Service engineers at Wiener Neudorf. 28m2 of HD8
coating (6+3) and 9m2 of CDP 4666 (6+4) wearplates have been installed by the customer
helped by our welders for ensuring correct protection of the joints.

HD8 is provided exclusively by the Castolin Services

workshops. You can have it directly on your parts and
also as full plates.
Applications
In large mine excavators (open mines), HD8 can be
used for protecting the excavator wheel, just under the
buckets. The highest wear is present on this position;
maintenance is difficult to be performed due to complex access. Bucket teeth for heavy duty shovels such
as draglines can also be protected with HD8. In agriculture, ploughs face high abrasion when they are used
extensively. HD8 can be applied on the plough edge.

A new stage in the development of Castolin Services takes shape in France. To meet all operational, technological
and business objectives, new employees have joined us.
Beginning July 2014, Felix Faure started his mission as plury-disciplinary business manager (robot coatings, CDP
wearplates and constructions, on-site work supervision). Felix was previously responsible for business in the installation of escalators. His profile is particularly interesting since he has a technical background in metalwork,
supplemented by sales training as part of Alstom Boilers.
Eric Cousin joined Castolin France in late July as Workshop Manager. Eric, a former client, was previously responsible
for business in a generalist metalworks workshop and brings singnificant team management experience.
Following the installation of the welding robot and the production launch with the invaluable support of Wieslaw
Prokop, the Castolin Services unit in France has passed to the stage of continuous production. To do this, Yves Humez is now in charge of the well-functioning of robot and CDC manufacturing. Yvez has 10 years experience with an
automotive supplier in the manufacturing of robot tooling.

CastoLab is now Services

Services are one of the key opportunities for

This is how it will look in the future:
our growth globally and we have been investing heavily to increase our worldwide presence
and technology offering in more industries. At
a recent Global Management Meeting on 2-4
December in Poland, it was decided to reinforce
EUTECTIC SERVICES
and clarify our commitment to the Services part CASTOLIN SERVICES
of our business by entering 2015 with a new,
simplified name to replace CastoLab Services. In
the future, our Service division will be just called
ServicesSERVICES
or Castolin Services or Eutectic
Services.
CASTOLIN
EUTECTIC
SERVICES
SERVICES
We will no longer utilize the CastoLab name.
This change will underline our transition from a
Laboratory employing small scale, trial-and-error processes to a large scale, repetitive manuOILTE
ASIA PACIFIC
facturing process. This new terminology will be
valid worldwide, including Japan where we will
do a phase-out of the TeroLab name.
The transition for low
changes (already in
ASIA cost
PACIFIC
this edition of Spirit, internal communications,
presentations, etc) should start immediately,
with the next stage being communication with
our customers (invoices, websites, etc) followed
by building signs, clothes, etc. The goal is not to
have a big bang and spend lots of money, but to
have an intelligent transition, at minimal cost,
with the CastoLab name phased out by the end
of 2015.
