OGIER GARDENS HOSTING INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIC GARDENING WORKSHOP

Free workshop aims to teach the public the basics and benefits of organic gardening.
(JACKSONVILLE, Fla.) Feb. 20, 2015Ogier Gardens, on the University of North Florida campus, will be hosting an hour-long
Introduction to Organic Gardening Workshop on Friday, March 13, at the gardens at 1:00 p.m. It has been designed to teach
attendees the basics of organic home gardening.
Topics will include garden planning, site selection, soil preparation, planting, fertilization and pest management techniques.
The workshop is open to the public and is free to attend. Registration is not required. Participants should arrive with appropriate
attire, such as sneakers and active wear. Studies show that home gardening is beneficial to ones health and nutrition and can
increase food security. It is also a way for college students to save money on groceries and gain an appreciation for their food and
where it comes from.
Food tastes better knowing you tended to it and watched it grow from a seed to a delicious vegetable, said Kevin
Anderson, coordinator of Ogier Gardens. Volunteering at the gardens is also an option for people to learn more about organic
gardening. For more information contact the garden staff at ogiergardens@unf.edu. The gardens has been hosting events, like
workshops and movie nights, to involve UNF students, as well as the public, with the farm to table movement.
About
UNF Ogier Gardens was established in 2009 as a student initiative that started as six raised beds next to the Wildlife
Sanctuary and has since expanded into a one acre production. The Gardens is maintained by its student staff and volunteers. It
serves as a way for students to gain hands-on experience with gardening and helps promote student health and wellness through
outdoor recreation and experiential learning.
