SYSTEM OF SYSTEMS

HIGHEST DETECTION WITH LOWEST FALSE ALARM RATE

The System of Systems is the combination of the CTX 9000 DSi (or CTX 9400 DSi)
and XRD 3500 Explosives Detection Systems (EDS) providing airport security systems
with comprehensive explosive material screening at unparalleled levels of detection and
achieving operational benefits for security professionals and passengers.
The System of Systems uses specially developed Morpho Detection software and algorithms. Based on a scan from Morpho Detections CTX 9000 series CT-based EDS and
the XRD 3500 scanner uses X-ray diffraction technology to perform targeted analysis only
on a specific region of interest within a suspect piece of checked-luggage.
The combined system is designed to clear as many of the alarms from the CTX 9000
series machines in an automated fashion as possible, thus reducing operational expenses. The remaining small number of bags that cannot be cleared by an XRD 3500 could be
directed to the airport Baggage Inspection Room (BIR) for manual inspection.

Benefits
Fully automatic EDS at highest security level
Reduces significantly the number of bags requiring manual inspection from a previous
screening step, thus reducing staff and costs at the same time
Reduces passenger reconciliation significantly, thus increasing passenger satisfaction

HIGHEST DETECTION WITH LOWEST FALSE ALARM RATE

System of Systems

Fully Automatic Detection. Fully Integrated Solution.

The XRD 3500 offers the additional capability of localized

screening to inspect areas of bags that have been identified
as suspicious by the CTX 9000 series EDS. The XRD 3500
uses alarm location data, acquired from bag images collected by the CTX positioned earlier in the BHS, to focus
on a subsection of the bag. This ability to focus on a limited
threat area greatly increases the throughput of the XRD
system. The XRD 3500 is designed to resolve alarms from
other explosives detection systems without depending on
operators and other time-consuming procedures, resulting
in a significant increase in overall detection, reduced processing times for passenger baggage, and potentially significant reduction in operating costs.

Localized Screening
After feeding the bag to the XRD 3500, the Prescanner takes
a conventional X-ray image of the incoming bag. It defines
the position of the bag on the internal conveyor, and matches
the alignment to ensure the correct region of interest is
inspected. To find the previously defined threat area in the
bag, special parameters and algorithms are used. This patented bag registration provides a coordinated hand-shake
between the CTX and the XRD scanners. Matching the bags
handshake is necessary since a bag may twist or flip on its
way from the CTX to the XRD.
The coordinates of the threat region are then communicated
to the XRD scanner to inspect the target areas using diffraction technology. If for some reason the threat region cannot
be clearly identified, the XRD automatically switches to a full
scan of the bag.

In an integrated environment, bags are automatically conveyed from the CTX 9000 series to the XRD 3500 via the
Baggage Handling System (BHS). Fully automatic inspection
determines whether the bag needs a further inspection or
can be sent to the airplane.
