The most extensive range of motors

SIMOTICS
The history behind the most extensive range of motors in the market today started about 150 years ago, when
Werner von Siemens developed the dynamo electric principle in 1866. It allowed the design and construction of
powerful electric motors and created the basis for their widespread use in the industrial environment.
Since then, motor development has been a core business of the company and with more than 100 years
of experience under its belt, Siemens sets the pace when it comes to innovative motor technology.
Today, in industrial plants and systems around the world, many millions of our motors are ensuring efficient
motion in operation in all sectors, applications and power classes. Starting with energy-efficient low-voltage
motors through motion control motors with a high dynamic performance up to powerful high-voltage motors
and well-proven DC motors. All of these motors have proven themselves in use, and are attractive as a result
of their quality, efficiency and competitiveness. The only thing that was missing up to now was a name that
reflected their power and performance. They now have this name and it is SIMOTICS.

In the core of the process

The basis for the highest plant availability

For decades, Siemens has set the pace for high-voltage motors in the global market. For all ongoing and new
developments, our focus has always been on achieving the maximum reliability of our high-voltage motors.
When all is said and done, as core of the process, they have a decisive influence on the availability of the complete
plant or system.
Maximum reliability even under the toughest of
conditions
Our power of innovation and the experience that we have
gained over many decades represent the key to achieving
high productivity. We know how important the reliability of
high-voltage motors is. This is the reason that we use highquality materials and components. Further, for SIMOTICS
HV motors, enclosure, bearings, active parts, ventilation and
cooling system are perfectly harmonized and coordinated
with one another. All materials, every component and
every production technique is carefully selected to secure
the high availability of your plant or system.
Tough testing before they go to the field
Before our high-voltage motors are used in your plant or
system, they are subject to rigorous testing in state-ofthe-test systems. There, future operation is simulated
under normal and extreme conditions. Climate chambers,
in which the behavior of motors is checked from 55C to
+85C as well under high humidity, or back-to-back tests
up to 100 MW are just some examples of the wide range
of functionality of the test systems, which are also available in our Norwood (USA), Tianjin (China), Kalwa (India)
as well as Berlin, Nuremberg and Ruhstorf (Germany)
plants.
System integration only proceeds once rigorous testing
has been completed. This ensures fast and smooth commissioning and secures long-term undisturbed operation.

Monitoring for the extreme case

In extreme situations, even the most technically sophisticated motor is subject to load levels that result in operation at the limits of its design load. As a consequence, our
motors are equipped as standard with bearing and winding monitoring devices. In addition, for SIMOTICS HV
motors, a motor condition monitoring system allows bearing vibration and temperature as well as winding temperature to be monitored online. The data are evaluated by a
central maintenance system integrated in the control
room. As soon as the alarm threshold is reached, the
appropriate service measures can be automatically
initiated.
Short response times around the globe
The Siemens service network spans the globe: it can be
accessed 24/7, and when service is required, short distances optimize response times and as a consequence,
downtimes are decisively minimized. Our numerous contract workshops can access spare parts that are available
for decades and when required can also retrofit motors.

You can depend on this

The Micalastic insulation system that has proven itself around
the world for decades
The Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) system, coordinated
with the insulation design, allows line and converter operation, high switching and reversing strengths, high stiffness of
the winding overhang and excellent corona protection
Outstanding mechanical strength and thermal endurance for
an extremely long winding service life
Extremely low vibration values, which is made possible by
the innovative production process in conjunction with highprecision balancing values, which not only satisfy IEC, NEMA
and API standards, but frequently even surpasses them
Bearings that have an especially long service life and require
very little maintenance

Frugal in every perspective

The efficiency of SIMOTICS HV motors

SIMOTICS HV motors not only set themselves apart as a result of their outstanding reliability.
Their cost-saving features are also unique and that from every perspective: Over the complete lifecycle,
they save time and space and last but not least, operating costs.
Shorter project execution times
Already starting in the planning phase, intelligent tools
support the selection, configuration and engineering
of SIMOTICS HV motors. For instance, the SIZER WEB
ENGINEERING tool to reliably select the optimum motor
and for efficient engineering with complete documentation.
However, SIMOTICS HV motors themselves play a role in
significantly speeding up project execution: Their delivery
times are extremely short and their low weight for the
particular power rating, coupled with the installationfriendly design means that they can be very quickly integrated in the plant or system.
Less space required
Our compact high-voltage motors also set standards when
it comes to power-related dimensions and weights. They
save valuable space, therefore reducing the costs of the
complete plant or system:
The costs associated with the motor foundation are lower
and mounting and installation costs are also reduced.
This is ensured by the following:
high utilization of the active parts
innovative cooling and ventilation systems
state-of-the-art motor design techniques

Quiet without noise damping

The low noise level for the particular power rating of
Siemens high-voltage motors means that additional noise
attenuating measures are not required. This also saves time
and costs.
Lower operating costs
Energy usage has an especially significant impact on the
operating costs. To keep these low, SIMOTICS HV motors
have an especially low-loss design: in some instances, they
have efficiencies above 98%. Beyond this, the low-maintenance concept reduces maintenance costs to a minimum.
Further, as all wearing parts are standard parts, favorably
priced standard lubricating greases (based on lithium soap
and mineral oil) can be used which also has a positive
impact on the operating costs.
Environmentally friendly
SIMOTICS HV motors reduce the stress on our environment
over the complete lifecycle, and not only as a result of their
low energy usage. They can also be recycled up to 98%.
Innovative
Well-proven technologies are used as basis for the innovative concepts of Siemens high-voltage motors. The ventilation versions that are available have been tried and tested
many times over. Especially innovative motor designs with
active magnetic bearings are completely wear-free and
quiet. The well-proven contactless bearing technology sets
itself apart as a result of all the advantages that it offers. In
addition to low power losses, they have a wide speed control range and maximum smooth running operation as a
result of the high balance quality.

Even higher performance when integrated in a system

SIMOTICS HV as part of Integrated Drive Systems

Even when operated alone, SIMOTICS HV motors play a decisive role regarding the availability and efficiency
of plants and systems. However, the benefits can be increased further when they are part of Integrated Drive
Systems where they interact perfectly with other drive components and the higher-level automation
landscape.

Perfectly integrated
Together with medium-voltage converters from the
SINAMICS family as well as couplings and gearboxes from
the FLENDER family, SIMOTICS HV motors form a technologically coordinated and harmonized integrated drive
system, which can be seamlessly embedded in Totally
Integrated Automation (TIA). Our comprehensive portfolio
for industrial automation is attractive due to the fact that
all of the automation components efficiently interoperate
with one another. This offers a real value added in all
phases of the production lifecycle last but not least by
using our Product Lifecycle Software (PLM) and our Data
Driven Services (DDS). Within the scope of TIA, the advantages of SIMOTICS HV can be deployed at the system level
and therefore reinforced.
The Integrated Drive Systems concept considers the drive
train from an integrated and holistic perspective. We have
combined all of its components to create an efficient and
integrated complete solution, which sets itself apart
through triple integration: horizontal, vertical and over
the complete lifecycle.

Value added through perfect

interaction
Higher degree of reliability
Longer service life of the individual components

As a result of the vertical integration, the drive train is
seamlessly embedded in the overall automation landscape
an essential precondition for a production environment
with maximum transparency and value-added.
Over the complete lifecycle
The software and services concept for all phases of
Integrated Drive Systems facilitates lifecycle integration.

The perfect partner for variable-speed operation

Our medium-voltage converters

Variable-speed operation of a SIMOTICS HV is of special significance as soon as the dynamics of the process
demand the appropriate control accuracy. For pumps, fans and compressors, energy usage can be slashed by
up to 70% through variable-speed operation. This makes medium-voltage converters the perfect partners for
variable-speed operation: Just the same as our high-voltage motors, Siemens converters are the undisputed
number one in the global market.

Depending on the particular application, the different

versions of SINAMICS medium-voltage converters leverage
the strengths of various technologies therefore providing the optimum solution for every conceivable drive task.
A very wide range of converter technologies is available
to achieve this: from load-commutated converters using
thyristors through voltage-source DC link converters
equipped with HV-IGBTs or IGCTs up to medium-voltage
cell converters. For the latter, low-voltage cells are connected in series so that an almost perfect sinusoidal motor
voltage is generated at the output.
These well-proven technological concepts are the basis for
ongoing development of our medium-voltage drives.
