The project
In November 2013, Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) hit
Eastern Samar of the Philippines, making history
as the most powerful storm on record to make
landfall. This super storm ravaged the Philippines,
destroying homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
One of the hardest hit communities was Sulangan,
located on the far southeastern tip of Samar.
Identified and driven by the leaders, parents, and
teachers of Sulangan as a top priority, the daycare
center project was made possible by our local NGO partner, CordAid, and the 68 Surf For Life
volunteers and their donors who raised the funds and built this project with their backs and
sweat. The center enables daycare and preschool services to the local children and
empowers their parents with the time to rebuild their homes and livelihoods. Thank you all for
your generosity and commitment to this project!
The people of Sulangan's resiliency and positivity in the face of disaster remain an inspiration
to all of us who worked alongside them to make this project a reality. We thank them for that
gift and are honored to have been able to play a role in the reconstruction of their community.

First, I would like to thank Surf For Life and other people who
really assist us or this building. This is really a big help to us,
especially the parents and to our children. Now we are comfortable
that we have new building for the day care center for our children.
Thank you to the donors.
Ignacia Abueme
Teacher with Sulangan Daycare Center since 1999
It gives a big help for us especially the children because after the
Yolanda (Haiyan), we dont have any rooms because it was
washed out. When the NGOs came and promised us to give help,
we asked rooms for the day care center so we can use it also for
our children.
Nilo Ramilo
Sulangan Village Chieftan
This is a big impact for the children because they are
the most vulnerable. For 107 students, we have only one
room so there are 2 sessions every day because we
cannot accommodate them all. This is a very important
project of Surf For Life. That is why when Surf For Life
asked me what is our priority project, I told them that it is
the school building for the children. Now we already
have two buildings, one that is donated by a party list
and this one, by Surf For Life.

SFL Volunteer, Sulangan, June 2015
"SFL and the trip to Philippines had positive impact on so many
lives, not only locals but people coming from western countries to
help. I absolutely loved every minute of it. Life changing!
