1.2TypesofOpenChannel

Prismatic andnonprismatic channels

Prismaticchannel isthechannelwhichcrosssectionalshape,
sizeandbottomslopeareconstant.Mostofthemanmade
(artificial)channelsareprismaticchannelsoverlong
stretches.Examplesofmanmadechannelsareirrigation
canal,flume,drainageditches,roadsidegutters,drop,chute,
culvertandtunnel.
Allnaturalchannels generallyhavevaryingcrosssectionsand
thereforearenonprismatic.Examplesofnaturalchannelsare
tinyhillsiderivulets,throughbrooks,streams,riversandtidal
estuaries.

BFC21103Hydraulics
Tanetal.(laiwai@uthm.edu.my)

Rigid andmobileboundary channels

Rigidchannels arechannelswithboundariesthatisnot
deformable.Channelgeometryandroughnessareconstant
overtime.Typicalexamplesarelinedcanals,sewersandnon
erodibleunlinedcanals.
Mobileboundarychannels arechannelswithboundariesthat
undergodeformationduetothecontinuousprocessof
erosionanddepositionduetotheflow.Examplesareunlined
manmadechannelsandnaturalrivers.
