Many Bahamians have an artistic side that express through their colorful art, music and exuberant
dance contagious. The people of the Bahamas love music and dancing. The annual carnival
Junkanoo, is the most popular expression form in music and dance.
The traditional music of the Bahamas is the Goombay, mixing the musical traditions of Africa with
European influences. The goombay is a Bantu word for "rhythm". Rake and scrape bands play the
goombay since the time of slavery, when African slaves had few resources to create musical
instruments.
Traditionally, rake and scrape music is used to accompany traditional dances of the Bahamas and
polka. The current rake and scrape bands use saxophones, electric guitars and other instruments, in
addition to saws and drums goombay.
Spiritual music are also part of the inhabitants of the Bahamas. Other rhythms of the Bahamas are
the Reggae, Rap, Soca, Hip-Hop, R & B and Calypso.
