Team Honda - Relay for Life Plans

Quarter Auction to Benefit ACS
Team Honda - Relay for Life will sponsor a quarter acution
on Monday, Oct. 19, with all proceeds going to the American
Cancer Society. The event will be held in the Covington Eagles,
located on U.S. Rt. 36 in Covington. The auction will begin at
7:00 p.m., with the doors opening at 6:00 p.m.
Prizes will include many items donated from area retailers,
along with coupons from local restaurants and entertainment
sites. Also, the kitchen and bar at the Eagles will be open before
and during the event.

2015 Maria Stein Country Fest Winners Announced

Norma OReilly of Minster was winner of the $2,000 first place raffle prize at the 2015 Maria Stein
Country Fest.
Other raffle winners included: $500 - Werner Holheide of St. Henry; $300 - Kay Sanders of Minster;
$200 - Eileen Stelzer of Coldwater; $100 - Jim Shank of Canal Winchester; $50 - Teri Spoltman of Maria
Stein, Kevin Saintigenon of Maria Stein, Deanna Sutherland of Trotwood, April Bertke of El Paso, Texas,
and Larry Post of St. Henry.
Mini-Indy Race: 4 yr. old - Vince Hess, 5 yr. old - Isaac Hartings, 6 yr. old - Breanna McCoy.
Mercer Health 5k Run/Walk: Best time was Spencer Schulze and Best Female was Ashley Lefeld. The
youngest runner was 6 years old and finished in the 244th position, the oldest, 74 years old, finished 256th.
There was a total of 342 runners.
A special thanks goes to those who purchased woodcarvings by the Kuennings. Due to their generosity,
the Maria Stein Country Fest was able to donate $600 each to the Fisher House, Wounded Heros and Battle
Buddy Foundation. The double eagle bench was purchased by Kent Shaner, the heart by Pleiman Landscaping, the smiley face by Pleiman Landscaping, the toadstool by Reliable Tent, the penguin by Winners
Meats, the palm tree by Pleiman Landscaping, the tiki statue by Bender Electric, the Notre Dame emblem
by Jason Ranly.
A very special thank you goes to everyone who went the extra mile because of the muddy conditions to
salvage an otherwise unsuccessful Country Fest. Much of the entertainment had to be moved or cancelled
completely due to the wet conditions of the grounds. Thank you to all who came out to the Country Fest
despite the conditions to make it a success. We hope to see you next year with better conditions and better
weather.

Eye Injuries Around Home Send Thousands

To Hospital Emergency Rooms in 2014
In 2014, more than 193,000 adults and children were treated in hospital emergency rooms in the United
States for eye injuries sustained within the home, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commissions
National Electronic Injury Surveillance System. Many of the items that were involved in injuries are commonly used in and around the home, including cleaning supplies, lawn equipment and power tools.
In a recent study, Age and Consumer Product-Related Eye Injuries in the United States, published in
the Rhode Island Medical Journal in 2014, the data showed that consumer products causing the highest proportion of eye injury visits to the emergency room varied among the different age groups including:
Chemicals for those ages 0-4 years, and in those ages 65 and over,
Household items in 5-9 year-olds,
Sports products in 10-24 year-olds,
Cutting and construction tools in 25-64 year-olds
Fortunately, most eye injuries can be prevented by wearing the proper eye protection. Prevent Blindness
has declared October as Home Eye Safety Awareness Month and offers free information at PreventBlindness.org/eye-safety-home.
Prevent Blindness urges everyone to wear protective eyewear approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) when performing household activities. The eyewear should have the Z-87 logo
stamped on the frames.
Prevent Blindness also recommends the following to help prevent eye injuries at home:
Provide lights and handrails to improve safety from tripping hazards on stairs.
Inspect and remove debris from lawns before mowing.
Keep paints, pesticides, fertilizers, and similar products properly stored in a secure area.
Keep your tools in good condition; damaged tools should be repaired or replaced.
Wear safety glasses or dust goggles to protect against flying particles, and chemical goggles
to guard against exposure to fertilizers and pesticides.
Wear chemical safety goggles when using hazardous solvents and detergents.Read and follow
all manufacturer instructions and warning labels.
Do not mix cleaning agents.
Know that regular eyeglasses don't always provide enough protection.
When were at home, its tempting to think we arent susceptible to dangers, but most eye accidents
happen at home when were doing things like working in the yard, cleaning the house or repairing a broken
item, said Sherry Williams, president and CEO of the Ohio Affiliate of Prevent Blindness. We urge everyone to monitor their surroundings and take the necessary precautions to help ensure the gift of sight lasts a
lifetime.
