Power Electronics

Term Project
Power electronics circuits are considered the backbone control of many industrial
applications such as motor drives, power systems, renewable energy systems,
heating systems and lighting systems.
Each student shall submit a report about one application related to power
electronics. The report can be one of the following:
1) A detailed literature survey about the role of power electronics in one
specific application. The survey should contain clear diagrams and graphs
and should cover the following aspects (more details can be included):
- A clear and detailed description of the chosen application or system
- The role of power electronics in controlling this application
- The different modes of operation of the power electronics circuit
- The design considerations for the power electronics converter
- Advantages, challenges and future trends in the use of power electronics
for this application
2) Simulation of a power electronics converter used for a specific application
using Simulink/MATLAB, PSCAD, PSIM or any other software package.
The submitted report should include the following:
- A brief description of the system under study
- The block diagram of the complete system
- The assumptions used for simplifying the system, if exist
- Simulation of different operating conditions
- The current and voltage signals of all the components in the circuit
Project submission:
- The deadline for project report submission is Wednesday, 12 Dec 2012
- You can submit the report to any of the TAs or to me.
Report:
The report format should be as follows:
- Number of pages: 4-5
- Font Type: Times New Roman
- Font Size: 13
- Margins: 1 Top, bottom, left and right
- Line spacing: 1.5 lines

All reports should include the following sections:

- Abstract
- Introduction
- Body of the report (survey or simulations)
- Conclusions and recommendations
- References
Additional Resources:
Literature survey:
A survey doesnt mean copying and pasting information from different references.
Please refer to the following document on guidelines on how to perform a good
literature survey: Lois E. Reed, Performing a Literature Review
Citation:
To write the paper, you will have to do research and read papers and books. Watch
out for information you randomly find using Google. You might not believe it, but
not all what is in Google is correct.
Make sure that the sources you use are legitimate as you will have to provide the
list of references used at the end of the paper (between 5 and 10 is a reasonable
number, but if you use more that is no problem).
For guidelines about citation, please refer to the document IEEE citation style
guide.

Good luck
