Every year over 10 lakh students appear for the Std. 10 SSC Maharashtra BoardExamination; examiners have a very difficult job. Any edge that
separates your answer paper from the rest of the students answer papers is an added bonus. Paper writing is a craft that can significantly boost your
SSC performance.
The good news is that just like any craft, paper-writing skills too can be learned if you know the right steps involved.
At Sinhal Classes, we pay great attention to the paper-presentation of our SSC students and I am glad to share the Top 10 points for paperpresentation with
you here:
1. GET YOUR BASICS RIGHT
It has been said time and again, but keeping all your examination material ready a day before the examination is very important part of your success at
SSC exams. Create a checklist of all the things you need to carry such as hall tickets, pens, pencils, writing pads, and other instruments, and make
sure you carry them. All your basic information such as your name, seat number, etc. should be filled in neatly on your answers booklets. Make sure
you get these basics right.
2. START WITH YOUR BEST
First impression is the last impression and the same is true for your SSC answer paper also. If the examiner gets a good first impression of you, it can
only work in your favour. Therefore, the first answer that you write, take extra precaution to make sure there are no careless mistakes, cancellations or
any turn-offs that will create a bad impression. Also, attempting questions in order is preferable but not necessary.
You can start with the answer that you know best if you are not so confident.
3. LEVERAGE THE EXAMINERS INERTIA
The examiner is only human and if he/she feels that you know your subject matter perfectly, then he/she may automatically tend to overlook some
minor mistakes you make later in the paper. Thus many top ranking SSC students choose to answer the questions they are most confident about first.
If the examiner is ticking your earlier questions, chances are he will keep ticking. You dont want the examiner to keep crossing your answers. Thus
write your best answers first and your not so perfect answers last. This can be a useful strategy especially for your subjective SSCpapers such as
English, Hindi, Marathi and History-Civics.
4. PRESENT YOUR PAPER WELL
Examiners cannot deduct marks if a student has not underlined important terms and not written neatly. However if you present your paper well, it
makes it easier of the examiner to award you marks. Few students waste time in decorating their paper with sketch pens etc. This too is not needed.
The trick is to give the examiner the confidence that you know what you are writing.
5. PAY ATTENTION TO SUBJECT SPECIFIC DETAILS
In all Maths and Science papers, writing the proper units is one of the most important things. Presentation of the solution of any sum of Algebra should
be done systematically with proper statements, formula wherever applicable and complete step by step solving. Scale is important while drawing a
graph. Highlighting the final answer is compulsory in any sum of Algebra. For objective type question, rewrite the complete statements with underlined
answer. A balanced chemical equation with proper explanation is required. In ray diagrams, circuit diagram arrows are important. For questions like
give reasons, short answers, distinguish-properties and uses, the number of points should be as per the marks allotted for the specific answer.
6. WRITE GOOD CRISP ANSWERS
In subjective papers, examiners have to read a lot of text. Many answer sheets contain long blocks of text which are very inconvenient for the
examiners to check. Whenever possible, write your answers in bullet points one below the other. Always write short paragraphs with just enough
explanation of each point: not too much, not too little. Many of our professors who have also been board moderators say that this single mistake can
cause good students to lose up to 4-5 marks in the paper. Make sure you do not make this mistake.
7. DRAW SIMPLE & NEAT DIAGRAM
The goal of drawing a diagram in any SSC paper is to show the examiner that you know the name and location of various parts. Many students lose
marks because their diagrams are too complicated. A simple, clear diagram that you can draw in a minute or two is much better than an artistic
diagram with too much detail. The labeling must be in FULL CAPS and the diagram should have a Title.
8. RECHECK YOUR PAPER PERFECTLY
Examiners dont read 100% of your paper, word-by-word; they look for the keywords. Many times under exam pressure while writing fast, we may skip
writing few keywords in some answers even though we know them. Carefully rechecking your paper is the ONLY way you can spot errors and rectify
them.
9. ATTEMPT OPTIONAL QUESTION
Year after year, many students leave the examination hall before time. Since there are no marks for leaving early, its better to attempt extra questions
so that in case you miss out a point in one question you can make it up in another. Attempting extra questions is a good strategy employed by top
ranking students year after year but this has to be done only if you are left with time after completely re-checking your paper.
10. GET READY TO SUBMIT
After tying your papers neatly, and thoroughly rechecking your paper you can further improve it by drawing neat lines between two answers,
underlining the important sentences etc. Adding the final touches should only be done if you are left with time after completely rechecking your paper.
This will definitely add a nice feel to your SSC exam papers.
Remember, getting excited about writing your SSC papers will automatically improve your actual performance. So feel confident and write the
PERFECT SSC papers that you can. Best Wishes for your academic success. All the best.
Divide by 5
It's often more convenient instead to multiply first by 2 and then divide by 10.
For example,
1375/5 = 2750/10 = 275.
Addition of Two Numbers:
2166
9327
------Let's add these two numbers in our heads (i.e., without paper). Can you do that?
Our first attempt is to do it like most of us do on paper: 6+7=3 carry the 1 (13), 1+6+2=9,
1+3=4, 2+9=11. The answer is . . . now what were those numbers? The problem here is
memory, not mental arithmetic. That's why people use paper (or an abacus, or their
fingers), to help out their memories.
Memory is why speed arithmetic experts (I call them "arithmetickers") usually add
numbers like these from left to right. It is a little more complicated that way (you have to
back track). But, you end up saying the answer from left to right, just as it is normally
said.
It is easier to remember a number from left to right.
Let's try again: 2+9=11, 1+3=4, 6+2=8, 6+7=3 and that previous 8 should have been a 9
(because of the carry). I actually remembered the answer, 11493, that time. It's still a
test of my memory, but not bad. It may take you a little practice to be able to do that.
Great!!
Isnt it!
Addition of Columns:
29
37
15
21
32
85
44
--How about this addition problem?
Add these up in your head. It's not too tough to add up the right column, remember the
carry, and add up the left column, just as you would do with a pencil.
In the right column, a speed arithmetic person might group the 9 and the 1 (10), the two
5's (10), and then the 7+2+4 (13) to get 33. Something similar works for the left column.
A few people group elevens instead of tens.
Instead, what I do is add 29+37=66, then 66+15=81, then 81+21=102, 102+32=134,
134+85=219, and 219+44=263.
Isn't that slower?
Maybe!
But I have little to remember, just the sum so far. It becomes very fast, if you practice
doing it that way. That is how a person with an abacus could do it. And an abacus is just
a way of remembering the latest sum. That's something you can easily do without an
abacus.
Addendum (Tricks):
Older speed arithmetic books dwelt almost exclusively on tricks. Here are some of those
tricks (which you can deduce on your own, instead of memorizing this table):
Multiply by 5: Multiply by 10 and divide by 2.
Multiply by 6: Sometimes multiplying by 3 and then 2 is easy.
Multiply by 9: Multiply by 10 and subtract the original number.
Multiply by 12: Multiply by 10 and add twice the original number.
Multiply by 13: There is no easy trick method. Multiply by 3 and add 10 times original
number.
Multiply by 14: Multiply by 7 and then multiply by 2 (or vice versa, whichever seems
easier).
Multiply by 15: Multiply by 10 and add 5 times the original number, as above.
Multiply by 16: You can double four times, if you want to. Or you can multiply by 8 and
then by 2.
Multiply by 17: There is no easy trick method. Multiply by 7 and add 10 times original
number.
Multiply by 18: Multiply by 20 and subtract twice the original number (which is obvious
from the first step).
Multiply by 19: Multiply by 20 and subtract the original number.
Multiply by 24: Multiply by 8 and then multiply by 3. A similar method works for other
numbers that can be factored, like 32 or 45 or many others.
Multiply by 27: Multiply by 30 and subtract 3 times the original number (which is obvious
from the first step).
Multiply by 45: Multiply by 50 and subtract 5 times the original number (which is obvious
from the first step).
Multiply by 90: Multiply by 9 (as above) and put a zero on the right.
Multiply by 98: Multiply by 100 and subtract twice the original number.
Multiply by 99: Multiply by 100 and subtract the original number.
There are a lot more tricks for multiplication, division (divide by 5 by multiplying by 2 and
dividing by 10), addition, subtraction, and squaring.
Square Roots
Square a two-digit number that ends in 5 (like 85) by multiplying the left digit by the next
highest number (8x9=72), and tack on "25" on the right (7225)

Tips to do well in exams
Don't panic on exam day. On the night before the exam, and in the morning, read
through
your
notes
a
few
times,
then
put
them
away.
Don't panic if you have not studied well. Just think over the question and you might
remember something the teacher taught you. After all, you are studying things that men/
women
have
discovered
before
without
previous
knowledge.
Keep a glossary of any words belonging in an educated vocabulary and pertaining
to your subject matter which you may be able to incorporate in formulating your exam
responses.
Make your own reviewer. Write your keywords in every topic and use different
colors of ink for easy recognition. When you create your reviewer, use all the resources
you have available. Make sure to personalize it so you can enjoy it!
Eat a healthy breakfast that day, so you feel energized, but don't eat so much that
you feel full. Something to consider is a study that says males do better on tests if they
are slightly hungry, and females do better on tests if they are slightly full. Again, don't
overdo
it.
You gain less by studying for exams at the last minute. One way to think about it is
to start studying for the next exam as soon as you get the material, don't wait until a
week
before
the
test
to
start.
Try and have all your study notes complete at least 2 weeks before the exam. This
allows you plenty of time to work through past papers for revision and go over and reread
anything
you're
a
bit
hazy
on.
In the lead up to exams, try and get your hands on some exam papers for previous
years. Doing these before the real exam will give you an idea as to what you'll be up
against
and
will
highlight
anything
you
still
need
to
revise.
If you suffer from exam stress then take a calming antidote, perhaps an herbal tea.
Just
don't
overdose
because
it'll
make
you
drowsy.
Don't
stress
out,
it
makes
your
mind
work
slower.
Allow yourself a few minutes to settle into a zone of intense concentration when
approaching
your
reading
or
writing
academic
assignments.
Realize that you may need to internalize information actively to keep focused. This
may be accomplished by following the text with a pencil and whispering the text to
yourself to ensure that you are progressing during your study segments of time.
Reproduce the academic material from memory to monitor retention levels at
regular
intervals
as
a
sort
of
self-testing
mechanism.
Find as many associations or ways to connect the new information which your
brain is acquiring with the information which is already securely entrenched in your brain
to
foster
cohesion
in
your
arsenal
of
knowledge.
Adopt passionately creative methods of memorizing related information using
numbers, acronyms, mnemonic poems, wild stories and outlandish mental pictures to
truly
bring
the
material
alive
in
a
virtually
unforgettable
way.
Have a balance in life, exams are simply a quick and lazy way to assess people.
Don't
panic,
just
study.
Develop a positive attitude towards exams. If you are well prepared you'll walk into
the exam room thinking "WOW! I can't wait to prove myself to these examiners, I'm
gonna Ace this test, just to show them." Negative attitude: "Oooh, I'm so nervous. I hate
exams;
what's
the
point?
I
really
don't
feel
up
to
this".
Ever heard this? "Good luck with your exam!" This is false hope, you shouldn't
need a pint of luck to help you succeed, and if you DO need good luck, then you
obviously
haven't
prepared
enough.
While some can be, most exams aren't really this big. Exams are really just large
quizzes
with
a
time
limit.
No
big
deal.
During the exam, avoid blanks. Try as hard as you can to make an intelligent
guess. Take the closest answer but remember not to take too much of your time in
answering one item. Go back and review your answers after you finish the exam, if you
still
have
time.
Be
relentlessly
confident
in
yourself
and
your
abilities!
Mind
your
diet
and
don't
drink
alcohol.
Avoid visiting any social-networking sites! It can be done.
