Chapter 1-3 Review Questions

Directions: Answer the following questions in 4-6 sentences each (minimum). I am not looking for
Hemingway-esque sentences here, either. For full credit, you MUST make connections to previous events in
history. I recommend reading a section of the chapter (there are usually 4 sections per chapter) completely
BEFORE answering the questions in order to help you make connections. THIS MUST BE
HANDWRITTEN!
Remember: I am NOT asking you to write a summary of the textbook. I am asking you to THINK about
the questions and develop your own answers based off the discussion in class, and the textbook.
Example Question: What effect did the Battle of New Orleans have on the war? on Andrew Jackson's
career?
Example Answer: The War of 1812 ended in 1814 with the Treaty of Ghent, signed between the US and
Great Britain. While the war focused mainly in the North, there were some battles on the Southern and
Western frontiers of the United States. One such battle was the Battle of New Orleans, which actually
occurred 3 weeks after the Treaty of Ghent was signed. In the battle, Andrew Jackson and 4,000 US soldiers
faced 11,000 British soldiers, and inflicted heavy casualties while only losing comparatively few US
soldiers. This battle proved to be an important military victory for the US. Defending New Orleans was
important for the US, as it was the mouth of the Mississippi River, which was the heart of American shipping
in the newly opened West. For Andrew Jackson, the commanding officer for the US, it proved him to be the
only real military hero of the war, and brought him to national prominence, eventually leading to his
presidency.
