Installation
3.1
Compatibility / Requirements
Attention
3.1.1
When developing new versions of Chromeleon, Dionex attempt to always maintain backward
compatibility, i.e., any data created with previous Chromeleon versions are readable with the
new version and all calculations provide identical results. However, in rare cases, software issues
may be discovered, which, if fixed, affect backward compatibility.
Introduction of new features sometimes require that the data formats are changed. In these
cases, data created with Chromeleon 6.80 might not be readable with previous versions. In other
words, forward compatibility cannot be guaranteed this is quite natural in software
development.
Backward and forward compatibility issues known in this Service Release are summarized in the
following sections.
3.1.1.1
There are no changes in this Service Release that affect backward compatibility.
3.1.1.2
Dionex RS detectors (supported since 6.80 SR6) use a new data format that can be read only
by Chromeleon versions 6.80 SR6 or later.
The Agilent 7890A GC driver uses a new Server Configuration format that can be read only
by Chromeleon versions 6.80 SR7 or later.

3.1.3
3.1.3.1
Virtualization techniques are usually not fully compatible with real-time operations
and usage of multiple communication ports, which are essential for instrument
control. For this reason, the Chromeleon Server cannot (reliably) run on virtual
machines. Communication with the instruments may not be established at all, or
communication problems are likely to occur.
The Chromeleon Client usually works in virtual machines; however, this is not
validated by Dionex.

Release Notes
Chromeleon 6.80 SR7
As with the main Chromeleon 6.80 release, Dionex recommends SP4 for customers
who must still use Windows 2000.
NOTE: When the Chromeleon Transaction Agent is activated, special privilege settings
must be applied under Windows 2000 SP4 (see section 4.4 in the Release Notes for the
Chromeleon 6.80 main release).
3.1.3.2
Microsoft Windows XP
For the main Chromeleon 6.80 release, SP2 of Windows XP was recommended.
Since SP4, Chromeleon 6.80 also supports Windows XP SP3.
NOTE: Some functions of Chromeleon may require changes in the firewall settings of
Windows XP SP2 / SP3. For details, see section 3.4.
Windows XP (no SP) and SP1 are still accepted, but the Chromeleon Setup and IQ will
issue a Warning.
3.1.3.3
With some limitations, starting with version 6.80 SP3, Chromeleon is compatible with
Windows Vista. Dionex recommends using SP1 of Windows Vista. SP1 is required for
controlling more than one system via USB. For more information, please refer to the
Chromeleon and Windows Vista document in the Additional Documents folder on the
SR DVD.
3.1.3.4
For the main Chromeleon 6.80 release, SP1 of Windows 2003 Server was
recommended.
Since CM 6.80 SP2, Chromeleon also supports Windows 2003 Server SP2.
3.1.4
3.1.4.1
Database Support
Required MDAC Versions
Chromeleon requires specific database interfaces that are provided with the Microsoft Data
Access Components (MDAC). The validated versions are:
Operating System
MDAC Version
2.5 SP3
Windows XP SP2
2.8 SP1
2.8 SP2*
Windows Vista
Note
The MDAC check for CM 6.80 includes all MDAC versions from 2.5 (RTM - SP3),
2.6 (RTM - SP2), 2.7 (RTM - SP1) and MDAC 2.8 (RTM and SP1). Future MDAC
versions may not be recognized correctly. If in doubt, check for the newest version of
Microsoft's 'Component Checker' tool on the Microsoft homepage. A version of this
tool is also available on the DVD: Other Tools\ODBC\Component_Check.exe.

3.1.4.2
Chromeleon has been validated to work with Oracle 8i, version 8.1.7, Oracle 9i, version 9.0.1.1.1,
and Oracle 10g Release 2.
The connection to an Oracle database server requires the Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle,
which is part of the MDAC package. This is the only validated ODBC driver for the connection to
Oracle databases.
Caution
3.1.4.3
The Oracle-provided driver for ODBC will not work with Chromeleon.
Supported Microsoft SQL Server Versions
Chromeleon has been validated to work with Microsoft SQL Server 2000, version 8.00.382 and
2005, version 9.00.1399.00.
The connection to Microsoft SQL Server 2000 requires the Microsoft SQL Server driver. The
connection between Chromeleon and the database was validated with this driver.
Caution
3.1.5
3.1.5.1
Do not use any other driver to connect to a Microsoft SQL Server database.
Chromeleon 6.80 requires the Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 SP2 (applies to all
supported Windows operating systems except Windows Vista).
If not already present on the target computer, the necessary files are installed automatically
during the installation of Chromeleon. In this case, the installation events are logged in a file
called DotNetInstall20.log in the \Chromel\IQ folder.
Note:
CM IQ has been updated and checks whether .NET is properly installed. If it is not, an Error is
issued.
On computers with Windows Vista, Microsoft.NET Framework, Version 3.5 SP1 is required. For
details, please refer to the "Readme.html file on the DVD itself.

3.1.6
Firmware Requirements
3.1.6.1
Dionex IC instruments
To ensure proper operation, Dionex IC instruments should be equipped with the most recent
firmware. A table of validated firmware versions is provided in the IC Firmware Validation
Matrix document in the Additional Documents folder on the SR DVD. If you have instruments
with firmware versions older than those listed, please contact your local Dionex office for
assistance.
3.1.6.2
For other Dionex instruments, such as the UltiMate 3000 and Summit modules, the
recommended firmware versions are included in Chromeleon. You can check the version and
update the firmware from within the CM Server Configuration. Whenever a new firmware version
is released for these modules, this is described in the corresponding Chromeleon Release Notes.
For information about new firmware versions provided with this Service Release, please refer to
section 4.1.
3.1.6.3
Third-party instruments
For third-party instruments, the Online Help describes the tested / minimum required firmware
versions. Using an older firmware may cause communication problems. Dionex does not expect
any problems to occur with using newer firmware versions. For systems like the Agilent 1100 and
1200, all modules must have the same/compatible firmware version.
3.2
General Instructions
Attention
Make sure that the installation operator has full local Windows administrator
privileges. During the installation, the PC must be restarted. After this, the
same operator must log in again, so that the remaining steps of the installation
process can be performed correctly. Otherwise, the installation will fail or will
be incomplete!
Attention
Tip
The Service Release is cumulative, i.e., it contains all the previous Service Release,
Service Packs, and Driver Updates of Chromeleon 6.80. Therefore, it is not
necessary to install any Service Release/Pack or Driver Update prior to installing this
Service Release. For more information about Service Packs, Service Releases and
Driver Updates, see section 4.1.
To install this Service Release, exit all Chromeleon programs (including the CM Server and CM
Server Monitor) and run either one of the following programs:
Chromeleon_Service_Packs_April_2009.exe
Chromeleon Service Pack Master Setup, which detects your Chromeleon
version and launches the appropriate setup program for releases 6.60,
6.70, or 6.80.

The setup will create a locked folder named Dionex Templates on the home Datasource of the
system. Typically, this Datasource is named <PC_name>_local. The template folder contains
directories for Chromeleon IC Application Templates, Panels, and Reports. The Panels directory
is grouped according to the target devices, such as, Dionex_IC, Dionex_LC, GC, LC_MS, etc.
These panels serve as masters to adapt and create new panels for the installation.
Attention
Note
3.4
With Service Pack 2, Microsoft introduced a firewall in Windows XP. To operate Chromeleon with
this firewall, a few exceptions must be defined in certain scenarios.
For details, please refer to topic "Chromeleon and Windows Firewall" in the Chromeleon Online
Help.
3.5
