VOCABULARY PHRASE USAGE

ABS OLUT E BEGI NNER S 1 #3 - LET 'S DRI NK DUT CH COFFEE

1. Ik ben op weg naar... means "I am on my way to...", so the speaker had previously decided
to go somewhere specific and was interrupted before arriving. It is a very common
expression.
2. The expression ik ben toe aan... is best translated as "I'm in the mood for ..." Actually toe
just means "towards"it doesn't make sense if you translate the phrase literally. Just accept
that as a phrase, ik ben toe aan... means "I'm in the mood for ..."
3. "To be" is an irregular verb in Dutch, just like in English. "I am" is ik ben and "he is" is hij is.
We'll look at the other forms in the next lesson.

GRAMMAR
The Focus of this Lesson is Regular Present Tense Verb Endings.
Werken jullie elke dag?
"Do you guys work every day?"

In this lesson we've seen the rest of the endings of regular verbs. Let's have a complete
overview, using the verb werken.
ik werk - I work
jij werkt - you work (one person)
hij/zij/het werkt - he/she/it works
wij werken - we work
jullie werken - you work (plural)
zij werken - they work
So the plural is actually quite easy. No matter if you're talking about "we", "you", or "they", the
form is always werken, just like the base form. Dutch verbs just have three forms in the
present tense;
1. Without the -en and without any additional ending

CULTURAL INSIGHT
Times of the Meals in the Netherlands

Eleven o'clock in the morning is coffee time. A Dutch tradition is to visit family, friends or

neighbors around this time and have koffie met een koekje ("coffee with a cookie"). This can
happen on the spur of the moment or can be pre-arranged. It is quite common to have a refill,
but usually without a second cookie. When the Dutch are out around this time, it is very
common for them to drink a cup in one of the many cafs or coffee shops. Traditionally, Dutch
coffee is made by pouring hot water through a filter with ground coffee beans and served with
milk and sugar.
After lunch, around 3 P.M, it's teatime. When at home, it is common to make a pot of tea and
enjoy a cup or two, again with a biscuit or some chocolate.
Around five, it is tijd voor een borreltje ("time to have a drink before dinner") either at home or
in de kroeg ("the bar"). The Dutch usually have dinner at around 6 P.M and after dinner they
drink another cup of coffee.
