Concerns over the protection of our natural resources and the environment have resulted
in important investments to reduce and eliminate as safely as possible all waste in the urban
areas.
Landfills and water sewage treatment plants receive most of this waste. The high costs to
reduce and treat these residues may be offset by using them as an energy resource.
Guascor Power, a corporation with a high commitment to preserve the environment, has
contributed in the past 15 years to the reduction of the gases from landfills and water
sewage treatment plants. Furthermore Guascor Power engines have been specially designed
to use these biogases from municipal wastes.
Our experience of converting the biogas to energy allows us to list our multiple contributions
in several countries.

Elimination and use of the biogas from the water sewage treatment plants
Biogas collection takes place in wells equipped with drilled pipes. This allows biogas to leave
the well and be measured, controlled, dehydrated and treated. After this process the biogas is
the fuel for the Guascor Power power modules. Therefore it is produced electricity from the waste.
The treatment of the residual municipal water is a complicated process of purification and
filtration.
Biogas treatment
Biogas wells
Generated electricity
Prior to dump this treated water into rivers the contaminating elements are cleaned.
Part of the residues of the process is a biodegradable material that is stored after filtration and
decantation
Torch
The fermentation of the sludge results in a biogas containing 55-65% methane (CH4), 30-40%
carbon dioxide (CO2) and other gases.
Traditionally these gases have been treated and stored in gas plants and then used to heat the
stored sludge.
Organic waste
Modern installations store these gases after treatment to remove the corrosive and contaminating
elements, then they are used to power internal combustion engines specially designed for this
type of fuel.

Biogas regulation
Methane is a dangerous gas for its flammable properties and in addition it contributes to
smog and global climate change.
Some years ago the landfill gases were collected from the landfill and burnt in a torch. In
this process the energy value of this gas was wasted and the emissions produced were highly
toxic.
Currently well-managed landfills collect, treat and use these gases as energy source for
engines driving generators to produce electrical energy.
Part of the energy produced can be used for the landfill needs and the rest is exported to
the grid.
Electric energy
Thermal energy
The conversion of the landfill gas to energy benefits the local and global environment, some
of these benefits are:
Sludge
Biogas
Raw
incoming water
Additionally the thermal energy produced by the engines can be used to heat water and maintain
the sludge temperatures to improve the fermentation.
1. Elimination of
contaminating gases

2. Elimination of
explotion threats, fires

from the landfill
3. Transformation of the

The thermal energy generated in the engines can be used as a source of heat either for
greenhouses, industries or users that require this energy.
The heat from the exhaust can also be used to dry the mud and even transform it into compost.
The environmental and economical benefits achieved are similar to those mentioned for the
