Admission Requirements
Vancouver Island University offers a wide variety
of academic and trades programs. Admission to
most academic programs requires high school
graduation including a minimum grade of C in
English 12. Some programs require additional
high school course prerequisites such as Math
12 and, once admitted to a degree program,
some courses also have additional high school
course prerequisites. Admission to most Trades
programs requires high school graduation and
often an interview or testing; see page 26 for Trades
General Admission requirements.

details can be found in our online calendar at
viu.ca/calendar. VIU has provisions for Mature
Student Admission and also offers high school
upgrading classes. If you require further assistance

Deadlines
Although most of our academic and vocational
programs begin in September, there are many
opportunities to begin studies in January, May or
throughout the year. Applications for programs that
begin in September are generally accepted from
November 15 until March 31. Transcripts and other
supporting documents must be received by the
application deadline.
In many cases, late applications will be accepted.
Program start dates and application deadlines for
each program are noted in the program details of
our online calendar.
Although most programs are available at VIUs
Nanaimo campus, they may not be available at the
regional campuses (Cowichan, Powell River and
ParksvilleQualicum). For program locations, please

taking applications on November 15 for most programs, and some
programs accept applications on a continual basis.

Tuition and Fees

Canadians and Permanent Residents
As a general guideline, tuition for a full
course load of 10 University Studies classes
(one academic year = 30 credits) is $4,015
($4,818 for Science, 36 credits). For Trades
and Applied Technology programs, tuition
is $401 per month. Prospective students
pay a $37.10, non-refundable application
fee. Upon admission, a $200 tuition
deposit is required and students will be
informed of the due date for the balance
of tuition and applicable fees.
University Studies and Career/Technical
program tuition fees are due two weeks
after the start of the semester. For Trades
and Applied Technology programs, fees
are due in full before commencement of
the program.
