stuck out her lip. One more dart, then well start the
wishes.
Wishes, then dart.
Her pout grew fiercer.
Would he lose the wishes if he didnt do what she
ordered? Being an unlucky man, Darryl didnt want
to take the chance. He groaned and extended his open
hand. Glee flashed on her face as she snatched the dart.
She dipped one knee low and wound up like a pitcher
on the mound.
Now just one second Darryl started, but it was
too late. The moment it escaped her grip, the dart made
a beeline for the window to the right. When it hit, the
brittle pane of glass burst into a thousand pieces that
danced across the living room floor.
Darryls hands balled into fists. But she was grinning like a child in her first snowfall.
Spectacular, she breathed.
You listen to me! Darryl seethed. Enough funny
stuff. You give me my wishes and then you GET OUT!
Jolted from her reverie, Eden slouched and rolled
her eyes. Whatever. Its not like I want to hang out in
this dump anyway.
Darryl set his shoulders and lifted his chin. Are you
ready for my first wish?
Born ready.

three levels, but the study wasnt divided into stories; its
floor was the ground floor, and its ceiling was at the top
of the third floor. It was a skyscraper of a room tucked
at the edge of the lamp.
The study was the lamps only room that she was
forbidden to enter unless invited. It was also Xaviers
favorite room. He spent lots of time there, and kept it
in impeccable order.
As was their custom, Xavier and Goldie were sitting at their desks: grand, ornately carved pieces made
of walnut. Unlike the one Eden sat in, their chairs were
plush and covered with leather. Xaviers was forest
green; Goldies was crimson.
Behind them was a towering set of drawers that
curved with the belly of the lamp. Between the two
desks, a regal telescope balanced on three slender legs.
In the dimly lit air, particles of dust floated like tiny
fragments of knowledge. The volumes were pushed
tightly against one another, with not an inch of shelf
space to spare.
They needed to breathe, Eden thought. She knew
the feeling.
Xavier set his elbows on his desk and peered at her
through his eyeglasses like she was a specimen under
a microscope. He was tall and broad-shouldered, with
dark hair that he slicked back and parted on one side.
Once, on a granting in Mumbai, the wishers wife had

Youve got to be kidding me. This is so
ENOUGH! The word struck Eden like a slap. I
will not have this behavior in my lamp.
Indignation stung Edens cheeks. She blinked fast
so the hot liquid gathering behind her eyes wouldnt
spill over.
Goldie? she tried.
Eden could tell that Goldie was struggling to stay
stern. It didnt come naturally for her.
You heard Xavier, she said. Theres a way to
behave on grantings, and this isnt it.
Xavier smoothed a hand over his hair and closed his
eyes as if in pain. For several moments he was silent.
Finally he spoke.
Ours is a pleasant business. We grant wishes. We
make people happy. During your career, you are our representative. You show up, you make someones dreams
come true.
The same spiel shed heard since her training had
begun at age three.
You are the only person on this planet who can do
that. The only one. Because youre part of a legacy like
no other. His favorite phrase. And until you complete

it from the fertile red soil and rubbed it with her apron.
In a flash Eden appeared, ten and timid, a baby genie
freshly trained.
Shed learned about the sun; she knew its mass
(1.9891 1030 kilograms), its makeup (approximately
three-quarters hydrogen and one-quarter helium), the
temperature of its core (approximately 15.7 106 K).
Shed seen intimate photos of its undulating surface
captured by satellites in space. Shed seen it in photos
taken from Earth: high in the sky, an orange glob like
an egg yolk, or tucked into the horizon, half swallowed
by the sea.
But none of it had prepared her for its glory, for
the pulse of those rays reaching desperately to warm
her. How could the sun love her so when theyd only
just met?
Yet when she sought the rays source, she staggered
backward in pain. Stinging currents shot through her
eye sockets. Xavier had warned her to shield her eyes
from direct sun, but she couldnt have imagined light
like this. She was used to the soft glow of her chandelier
and to the flickering of candles on the dining table. Now
she saw they were thin imitations of the bright light that
baked the Earth like a cake in an oven.
She was so enraptured that she didnt notice the
farmers wife gaping at her like she was a ghost. Tearing her attention from the sky, Eden clumsily granted
