Title: Need For Values And Ethics For Effective Change In

Individuals, Groups, And Organization as whole.

Abstract
In the present scenario, where the world is facing various challenges on every front, cognitive
process of an individual is changing accordingly. Worldwide disturbances on economic, social,
cultural, technological and other global factors are contributing towards the displacement in
mentality. These changes lead to the melting pot of the personal values within societies and
organizations creating challenges for individuals in the changing environment. The problem
starts from the very early stage when an individual start to learn how to respond to change.
Terrorist activities by mentally ill people shows that when retaliatation is at its worst in response
to change in the environment. This is a worldwide problem which has divided the world in to
two: ethical and unethical value based system people. The same problem is faced by the
professionals in MNCs. Therefore if organizations fail to make the effort to clearly define their
expectations of ethical behaviour and provide support for fulfilling them, the vacuum that is left
will lead to unpredictable results. So need of the hour is to seed, to cultivate, to stimulate, and to
create the value system more ethical influenced with positive aspects of life. This will be
possible when every one of us will strive hard to develop an ethical mechanism to resolve the
problems and make people believing in the right path, and to lead the way with ethical value
based approach in order to decontaminate the odds out of the individual, group, society nation
and the world at large. The paper will emphasize on the importance and implications of value
and ethics on individuals, group, society and organization, so that to develop the tendency for
adopting changes which is need of 21st century.
Key Words: Ethics, Moral values, Value systems.

Introduction
While the concept of ethics has been around forcenturies, the changing conditions of the
worldtoday are creating problems never seen before. There has never been a greater level of
humanmobility in the world. Mobility has also allowed the massive movementof people from
one culture to another. It has nothingto do with a person being good or bad, butrather is a
matter of differing norms of behaviorbased on the society in which that persongrew up.
This is a worldwide problem which has divided the world in to two: ethical and unethical value
based system people. The same problem is faced by the professionals in MNCs. Therefore if
organizations fail to make the effort to clearly define their expectations of ethical behaviour and
provide support for fulfilling them, the vacuum that is left will lead to unpredictable results. So
need of the hour is to seed, to cultivate, to stimulate, and to create the value system more ethical
influenced with positive aspects of life.
Ethics is not a new concept in business, ithas gained importance and visibility recently asa result
of public- and private-sector disclosureand reporting issuesEthical behavior is not about abiding
by the law.Individuals and organizations can act legally andstill be acting unethically. Ethical
behavior is drivenby compliance with a set of values that actsas the touchstone for situational
decisionswhere rules may not exist to cover every alternative.Ethics is about the integrity of the
decisionmakingprocess that is used to resolve any numberof issues.
If our morality and the way we structure society today were to be informed by the principles of
today's science, what a different world we would live in. That society would be based on:
cooperative relationships rather than competition; a concept of evolution which includes moral
agency rather than blind adaptation to the environment through random selection; emphasis on
the subjective ahead of the objective; fields and energy would be structured to enable flow in

desired directions rather than a focus on objects to be manipulated through the application of
force.

Values & Ethics

VALUES are attitudes and beliefs aboutthings we think are important in life.Family time, money,
fame, religion, education, health, community service, independence, honesty are all values.
There are other values, of course, depending on the individual. Values, therefore, become part of
complex attitude sets that influence our behavior and the behaviour of all those with whom we
interact. What we value guides not onlyour personal choices but also our perceptions of the
worth of others. Values can be defined as concepts of the desirable with a motivating force.
Morals are values which we attribute to a system of beliefs, typically a religious system, but it
could be a political system of some other set of beliefs. These values get their authority from
something outside the individual may be at higher authority.
ETHICS are the rules of personalbehavior accepted by society.Ethics are also known as a code
of conduct. Our personal values contribute to thestrength of our ethics with positive behaviors
and positive attitudes. Our values, and consequently our ethics, are in a continuous development
or buildingcycle. We are confronted with choices every day. Most often we all make
goodchoices. Sometimes we may falter. Sometimes we make a wrong decision or a wrongchoice.
Learning to make choices begins at birth and is a growing process. We beginpracticing making
choicesvery simple at first. As we grow and get older, our choicesbecome more important and
become our patterns of behavior. Our choices begin toshape our attitudes, our self-image, our
lifestyle, and how we are perceived by others.Ethics are the standards by which behaviours are
evaluated fortheir morality - their rightness or wrongness.Personal ethics, school ethics, social
ethics, computer ethics, workplace ethics are basically the same. Ethics are aboutthe individual.
Specialized groups or organizations generallyfollow the ethics of their leaders. Ethics provides us
with the tools to determine whether or not we should do a certain action and the extent to which
a past action should have been done

Need for Values and Ethics

In the workplace, the environment affects its working, and working is highly influenced by its
culture. Culture is made by combined value system of overall organization and its performance.
Integrated efforts are seemed in those MNCs where the cultural transformation and adoption
process is smooth and continuous which prepares an entity to cope up with changes in the
external environment.
Workplace value system depends on the value system of a group and it comes out from every
individual who is associated with a specific group. Attitude, opinion, principles and ethics all are
the outcomes of an individuals value system.
An individuals value system and beliefs are governed by their demographic and psychographic
environment. Values are longterm beliefs which are developed in an individual through
experiences of its own, family members, friends, neighbours, colleagues, seniors, subordinates
and society at large. So it is a long process responsible for an individuals value system
development. Individuals knowledge and capacity to learn and adopt also plays a significant role
in individuals success.
Starting from individuals demographics when we step ahead to a group in an organization, the
requirements of individual characteristics are set standards demand some specific traits. These
traits include Honesty, Tolerance, Respect and a understanding of ethical behavior to engage
oneself in various accountable tasks with an integrated approach.
Individual ethical value system now requires incorporation with group ethics. Because common
goals can be achieved when one works in general interest of group and organization. The
pendulum of organization balances when in overall organization working environment is
Green, which allows every individual to focus on the objective and to perform under umbrella
system being connected to all. Developing a tendency to think out of the blue taking initiative for
the wellbeing of all. But this situation comes on organizational level, group level and individual
level.
So, the need of the hour is to inculcate ethics and core values in individual to induce the sense of
right and wrong, good or bad in oneself. The demand in the MNCs and other corporates are of
those personnels who possess greater value system and perform under extreme pressure with a
high degree of tolerance in their behavior.

Emerging theory for the business entity will be based on moral values and will be based on moral
values and ethicological environment which is required for the success of organization which
starts with the individuals value system and ethical behavior and spreads over departments and
groups to develop a congenial approach to perform better for the progress and prosperity of
everyone.
Workplace value system is developed by the contribution of every individuals value system
which flows into group and gradually into the organization. Work environment requires proper
and effective functioning of group and individuals.

Conclusion
We should understand the underlying importance of an individual value system which reflects in
the performance of group and organization at longer. The landscape will be painted well if there
will be a proper blend of various colours available, i.e., if organization wants to grow like a
rainbow, then available resources should be utilized at its best through standard code so as to
serve the interest of the society as well.
