BLADE HONER A NOVEL SERIES ABOUT THE LIFE OF THE OSEBERG PRIESTESS

SLARLJ THE SONG OF THE SUN

The Song of the Sun is traditionally thought of as a Christian visionary poem with certain pagan aspects. In
reality the pagan aspects are very strong, and we must suspect that the only reason this is not widely
recognized is because the pagan aspects focus on feminine pagan entities. It is basically a poem about
the experience of dying and of the hereafter. In this fragmented version I offer my own translations of the
stanzas that refer to pagan concepts.
11. Sttir eir vru
Svfur ok Skartheinn,
hvrgi mtti annars n vera,
fyrr enn eir ddusk
fyr einni konu:
hon var eim til lta lagin

United they were,

Sleep Wave and Abundance Heath Dweller
The one could not be without the other
until they were driven to frenzy
over a woman:
she was created for their downfall

12. Hvrskis eir gu

fyr Hvtu Mey,
leiks n ljsra daga;
ngvan hlut
mttu eir annan muna
en at ljsa lk.

They cared no longer

on account of the Bright Maiden
for games nor happy days
no other thing
could they pay attention to
than her illuminated shape.

15. Ofmetna drgja skyldi engi mar,

at hefik sannliga st;
v at eir hverfa, en hnum fylgja,
flestir gui fr

No man should entertain hubris

I have in truth seen
that those who follow Her,
for the most part turn from God

25. Dsir bi r
drttins mla
vera hollar hugum;
viku eptir
mun r vilja ns
alt at skum ganga

Ask you the goddesses to your aid

they who are of the speech of the Ruler
to be benevolent to you in intent
for a week after
all shall pass according to your will
all shall pass as you wish

37.Heljar reip
kmu harliga
sveig at sum mr;
slta ek vilda,
en au seig vru;
ltt er lauss at fara
.
38. Einn ek vissa,
hversu alla vega
sullu stir mr;
Heljar Meyar
er mr hrolla buu
heim hverju kveldi

The ropes of Hel

came tightly
bound around my sides
I wanted to tear them
but they were very hard
It is easy to go free
I alone knew
how on all sides
my pains increased
The Maidens of Hel
to my horror, invited me
to their home, each evening

39.Sl ek s
sanna Dagstjrnu
drpa dynheimum;
en Heljar grind
heyra ek annan veg
jta ungliga.

I saw the Sun

true Star of Day
sink into her roaring home
and by the Gate of Hel
I heard, from the other side
A heavy creaking.

40. Sl ek s
setta dreyrstfum,
mjk var ek r heimi hallr;
mttug hon leizk
marga vegu
fr v er fyrri var.
41. Sl ek s,

I saw the Sun

beset with blood beams
I was fast declining from the halls of the world
she seemed more powerful
in many ways
than she had been before.
I saw the Sun
