VOLTAGE SURGE TESTS

re

GENERAL
The same sample that was subjected to the drop and Leakage Current Tests was
subjected to this test. The line side terminals of the Line-Neutral and LineLine terminals that are protected by the representative ground-fault circuitinterrupter were subjected to the following surge tests: Unwanted Tripping
Test, Surge Immunity Test.

nR

eg

is

te

The ground-fault circuit-interrupter was connected to a supply of rated

voltage. The grounding lead or terminal of the ground-fault circuitinterrupter (if provided) was connected to the supply conductor serving as the
neutral. The ground-fault circuit interrupter was placed in the on condition
with no load connected. A GFCI intended only for use in an enclosure was
tested in the intended enclosure that was representative of the worst case
situation for these tests.

UNWANTED TRIPPING TEST (RING WAVE):

METHOD

re

One representative ground-fault circuit interrupter was subjected to ten

random applications or three controlled applications of a 3 kV surge applied
at 60 second intervals. When three controlled applications were employed, one
application was essentially at zero of the supply voltage wave, one at the
positive peak, and one at the negative peak.

te

The surge generator had a surge impedance of 50 ohms. The no load waveform of
the surge generator was essentially as follows:

is

a) Initial rise time, 0.5 microseconds between 10 percent and 90 percent of

peak amplitude,
b) The period of the following oscillatory wave, 10 microseconds, and
c)Each successive peak, 60 percent of the preceding peak.

eg

Following the application of the surges, the sample was checked for proper
functioning by pressing the TEST & RESET buttons.

nR

RESULTS

The sample [did not] [did] trip after being subjected to the surges and was
functional at the conclusion of the test.

SURGE IMMUNITY TEST (COMBINATION WAVE):

NOTE TO LAB TECHNICIAN:

testing.

Consult Corporate Laboratory Procedural Guide before

METHOD

re

All calibration waveforms are to be plotted and attached to the Data Sheet
package.

te

The same sample of the GFCI that was subjected to the Unwanted Tripping Test
was subjected to the Surge Immunity Test.

nR

eg

is

The sample was placed in the orientation to represent the most severe
conditions of normal installation while in an unheated condition. It was then
connected to a supply of rated voltage. Surge impulses were applied between
the points indicated in the table at the 90 and the 270 degree points of the
ac waveform. The test was conducted in accordance with the testing methods
described in IEC61000-4-5 Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Part 4-5:
Testing and measurements techniques Surge Immunity Test. Five impulses were
applied in the positive direction and five impulses were applied in the
negative direction at each point for a total of 20 impulses. If the GFCI
tripped as a result of an impulse it was reset prior to the next impulse
application.

The wave shape specifications for each portion of the combination wave are as
follows:
Open Circuit Voltage 4 kV peak, 1.2 by 50 s
Short Circuit Current 2 kA peak, 8 by 20 s
During and after the surge application, the sample was examined for
a) Emission of flame, molten metal, glowing or flaming particles through
any openings,(either preexisting or created during the test),
b) Ignition of the Enclosure, or
c) Creation of an opening in the enclosure that results in accessibility of
live parts.
Following the application of the surges, the sample was checked for proper
functioning by pressing the TEST & RESET buttons.

METHOD I

te

re

A previously untested sample was connected to a 60 Hz supply source with an

open circuit voltage of 120 V (100-105% rated). A resistor was connected
between the ungrounded load terminal and the grounded supply conductor as
shown (See Fig. 31.1 of UL 943), simulating a ground fault. The resistance was
adjusted to draw a 120 A load (6 x rating). The closed circuit voltage was
(greater than 85% of rated) 102+ Vac.

is

The accessible conductive parts (metal foil) was connected to the grounded
supply conductor through a 1 A fuse. The test was initiated 25 times by
depressing the reset button every ten seconds to complete the circuit. The
trip time was measured for each operation.

eg

RESULTS I

nR

There was no indication of a hazard or impairment of the device tested. The

average trip time was ____18.75___ milliseconds. The maximum trip time was

SHORT CIRCUIT:

METHOD I

te

re

A new sample was connected using the circuit described previously in the Extra
Low Resistance Ground Fault Test, except that the ground fault was removed. A
20 inch length of No.12 AWG wire was connected between the load terminals. The
line circuit included a series 20 A cartridge fuse. The grounded supply lead
was connected to the accessible metal parts and ground pin through a 1 A fuse.
Surgical cotton was placed over openings in the device. Current was initiated
once by a remote switch in the supply circuit.
At the conclusion of the above test, the sample was subjected to the
Dielectric Withstand Test

is

RESULTS I

eg

[x ] At the end of the test the unit was still operating normally and no
adverse effects had been noted. The 1 A ground fuse was intact.

There was no]evidence of dielectric breakdown

METHOD II

[ ]
The unit did not operate after the test and the 1A ground fuse was not
intact.

The test of Method I was repeated on [a new] [the same] sample except the 4 ft.
wire was connected to the hot contact of the GFCI face by means of a suitably
rated attachment plug.

RESULTS II
[x ] At the end of the test the unit was still operating normally and no
adverse effects had been noted. The 1 A ground fuse was intact.
