telling me bedtime mythological
stories explaining the importance
of all the festivals. Her stories of how
Goddess Durga killed the demons and of
Ramas victory over Ravana were heard
with apt attention by all grandchildren.
For me as a kid, what struck the most was
the resemblance of these characters to the
real people around us.
It is said that Hinduism is a way of life.
These characters and stories become just
a piece of imagination with no significance
if we fail to connect them to our real life
instances and personalities. At a time
when issues such as domestic violence
and harassment of women are on an alltime high, it is important to look at these
stories and rituals of our ancestors to find
solutions to current day problems.
For example, Goddess Durga believed

contribution
towards
Ramas victory over Ravana, glorifies
the contribution of women associated
with these stories. The adjectives used
to address these characters range from
mother to the planet Earth itself. Add to
the list, words such as purity, forgiver
and patience, you have an ideal mix
for the making of a protagonist for a
blockbuster saas-bahu daily soaps. So the
question here is, are we limiting womens
empowerment to just mythological stories
and daily soaps? Entertainment is a social
product of the society and one look at any

of the Indian daily soap today depicts
the plight of women in India. The ever
moist eyes of the women in these soaps
reflect the inability of majority of Indian
women to fight back injustice. Although
few do stand up against the odds and get
counted, the number raising their voice
against gender inequality is inadequate.
Unlike mythological stories, rarely do
we see a woman taking up a fight against
their oppression.
Goddess Durga herself has many
hands and has multiple personalities.
But, if one understands the symbolism
of the depiction, it becomes clear that
she is an amalgamation of many women

Tim Groser
Sandeep Singh

he Minister for Trade

and
Climate
Change
Issues, Tim Groser, while
speaking in the well-attended
INZBC hosted event Business
Without Barriers, assuaged any
anxiety in unequivocal terms
about the perceived lack of focus of
current government in deepening
bilateral trade between New
Zealand and India. The statement
that India is a top priority for our
government, and his emotional
energy evident in making this
statement, were enough to
drive the message across the
business community and other
stakeholders with interests in
promoting bilateral trade and
overall relations between the two
countries. The event organised
by INZBC and hosted by their
strategic partner Westpac was
a success.
There were two notable
observations about this event.

Minister for Trade and Climate Change Issues Tim Groser

First, there was no belabouring

by any speakers in the event that
why NZ-India bilateral trade was
important for everyone. Second,
and in some respect probably
more important than the first, was
the fact that Minister Groser, who
had recently returned home after
signing the significant agreement
on Trans-Pacific Partnership,
chose to speak passionately from
this platform, about the perceived

concerns among some sections

of New Zealand public about the
outcome of this agreement. It
was a clear reflection of maturing
of

organisation
committed to the promotion
of bilateral trade between New
Zealand and Indiato an extent
that the need for strong bilateral
trade relations has become a
general

common
wisdom. It was also a subtle

reflection of INZBCs proximate

situation with the New Zealand
government that it provided
enough comfortable space to the
Minister to speak about an issue
(TPP) so important to all New
Zealanders. In fact the question,
and urgency, about promoting NZIndia bilateral trade was discussed
within the broad contours of the
recently signed TPP agreement,

thus making this event even more

relevant for everyone.
The event was graced by few

from the honourable Minister
that included Sandeep Sood, His

Young. The welcome address

was delivered by Bhav Dhillon,
Treasurer INZBC, who welcomed
all guests and presented a
brief overview of INZBCs
achievements
in
promoting
business environment between
New Zealand and India. His
Excellency
Sandeep
Sood
enlightened everyone in the
audience about the muchtalked about change, in Indias
investment-climate under the
aegis of current Prime Ministers
Make in India initiative.
He presented some impressive
statistical figures about steady
increase in Indias FDI inflows
and
an
improvement
in
general perception about India
as a favourable investment
destination, thus suggesting NZ
businesses that investing in India
would be a smart choice in current
global financial environment.
Satish Ranchod, as expected from
a seasoned economist, presented
a comparative overview of
current state of health of New
Zealand and Indian economy,
and advised an exercise of caution
in future expectations about
growth in bilateral trade. Paul
Smith provided valuable inputs
for prospective New Zealand
exporters, especially with interest
in Indian market, about day-today challenges experienced by
exporters in both, engaging in
indirect (and direct) tax regimes
of target markets, and in gaining
favourable tax-rebates at home

India to New Zealand

The event was graced

by few other notable

the honourable
Minister that included

and Paul Smith from
Ernest & Young. The
welcome address
was delivered by Bhav
Dhillon, Treasurer
INZBC
with NZ government. The fact that
Minister Tim Groser was quick to
seek more clarification then and
there itself about a rough estimate
of lost funds in such exercise by

Kiwi exporters, was an indication

of Ministers responsiveness
towards our exporters, and a
welcome relief for many who
have some apprehensions about
Ministers intentions.
What
made
this
event
interesting was the Trade
Ministers choice to explain New
Zealand governments views on
bilateral trade with India. The
Minister affirmed governments
view that in absence of
international progress towards
a global multilateral trade
agreement, it was in best interest
of New Zealand to focus on large
trade blocs that provided entry to
large markets.
While agreement on TPP
ensured that NZ has preferential
access to a market of around 40 per
cent of world GDP, India equally
presented a vast opportunity. It is
a market of fast growing middle
class with increasing demands

for consumer goods and services.

Minister asserted that the New
Zealand government isRed fully
aware of Indias huge potential
and in fact our priority never
shifted on India, and it remains a
top priority for NZ.
In fact, he went on to assert
that we need not to be obsessed
with FTA in deepening our
bilateral trade relations. Probably
he was trying to clear the air on
perceptions held in some quarters
within the business community,
that the delay in negotiations
on FTA is creating a lull, and
holding back NZ government
from deepening bilateral trade.
Minister expressed satisfaction
in tremendous success story on
migration from India, among
other flourishing sectors such as
education that were flourishing
without FTA between the two
countries. Although he expressed
hope that two countries could do
better in other sectors such as
agriculture where New Zealand
was a definite super-power
and has lot to offer to world.
New Zealands cutting edge
agricultural technology and best
management practices have the
potential to add value to Indias
vast agricultural sector.
Minister was also hopeful that
the recent signing of agreement
on TPP by some of the major
trading nations in the Asia-Pacific
region would expedite Indias
own push for liberalisation
of its economy and surge to
participate in regional trade-

the basis of such hope, he pointed
towards the

liberalisation that drives modern
day governments. He further
asserted that politics is a mixture
of emotion and precision, thus
implying that no responsible
government these days can afford
to keep their nations businesses
out of fast moving business (of
maturing regional trading blocs).
The event was attended by
leading business leaders and also
by members of Parliament Dr
Parmjit Parmar and Kanwaljit
Bakshi. The evening concluded
with an announcement by Mr
Anthony Wenceslaus, former
Chair INZBC, of collaboration
between INZBC and British New
Zealand Business Association
(BNZBA).
Valerie
Taylor,
Executive
Director,
BNZBA
was present on the occasion to
sign a MOU between the two
organisations. There was an
agreement to mutually share the
benefits enjoyed by members
within their respective councils
and association.
It was another achievement
in the long list of successes by
INZBC in creating favourable
business opportunities for its
members and larger business
community in New Zealand. An
impressive array of drinks and
nibbles aided by the nice spring
weather were a perfect setting
for post event networking on the
Westpac terrace.

after a night out on Sunday.
Police is appealing for help in the
search of Mandeep Singh, 20, who
did not return after he went out with
friends in the wee hours of Sunday, the
New Zealand Herald reported.
Mandeep left with his three flatmates
for Bungalow8 club in Viaduct Harbour,
Auckland. His friends lost contact with him
at about 3:20 a.m.
His flatmate Gurjeed Singh, who was the
last person to see him, said he and Mandeep
stayed at Bungalow8 while their other two
flatmates left for another nightclub.
He told me to go to the other side and
enjoy myself, to go to the dance floor,
Gurjeed said, adding, I was dancing and
enjoying myself. After 20 or 25 minutes I
looked for him and he was not there.
Mandeep did not turn up for his work
and his culinary arts course at the Cornell
Institute of Business and Technology
on Monday.
His best friend Jatin Kalia, 19, said
Mandeep called him and told him that he
was at home.
The background was all quiet when he
called. It was not noisy like the club, so we
thought he must have been outside the club
and roaming the streets, Kalia said. When

Mandeep told a lie and after that he

our kids to be engaged in their

While they are at school, we want to
make sure theyre getting the best education
they can.
National is working hard to ensure all
our kids have the opportunity to engage in
learning that best meets their needs.
Trades Academies provide a different
learning choice for studentsvocational
learning directly related to the workforce
and skill needs of industry.
They deliver trades and technology
programmes to secondary students
based on partnerships between schools,
tertiary institutions, industry training
organisations, and employers.
The programmes are all about offering
students more choice about how and
what they will learn. They are becoming
an increasingly popular choice for more
young people.

Students like learning that is directly

relevant to their career aspirations and is a
starting point for them to go on to higher
studies in their chosen area.
So National is shifting more funding to
Trades Academy places to meet the demand
from our young students. From 2016, there
will be 600 extra Trades Academy places per
year, on top of the 340 extra places already

The extra places will be prioritised to
areas where there are more young people
at risk of not achieving NCEA Level 2 and

learning choices, such as Northland, South
Auckland, Bay of Plenty, and Gisborne.
The recent Education Review Office

Phil Goff
Labour MP

his week, new Australian Prime

Minister,
Malcolm
Turnbull,
visits New Zealand for the first
time as PM. He will meet with both New
Zealands Prime Minister and Leader
of the Opposition.
It needs to be the occasion for more
than the usual backslapping and saying
what a great relationship we have. There
needs to be some honest and hard talking
about the reciprocal treatment given to
Australians in NZ and New Zealanders
in Australia.
For 150 years people could move freely
between the two countries, enjoying the same
rights in either.
That came to a grinding halt when former
Prime Minister John Howard in 2000
decided unilaterally that Kiwis in Australia
who arrived after 26 February, 2001 would
not have access to some key benefits paid for
out of taxes from Kiwis working there. They
also would not have voting rights or a ready
path to citizenship.
Aussis coming to live in New Zealand by
contrast can vote after one year, get all of the
benefits available to other New Zealanders
after two years, and apply for citizenship after
five years. Its a very unequal relationship. As
a result Kiwis living in Australia and paying
taxes to the Australian Government for up
to 14 years are in real trouble if they fall on

WAS $699

Chance to push Australia

to give Kiwis a fair go

hard times. If they are sick there is now no

sickness benefit and, if made redundant, no
unemployment benefit.
There is no support for single parents
whose relationship ends.
Its got worse. Since Australia introduced
a National Disability Insurance Scheme in
2013, all Kiwis have had to pay a compulsory
levy of half a percent of their income as a
premium. But if they become disabled they
are not entitled to claim benefits despite
having paid into the scheme. Thats grossly
unfair and its not the way you expect to be
treated by a mate.
Now, under tougher deportation laws,
kids born in Australia to parents who are
Kiwis by descent but not birth are being
threatened with deportation. People who
went to Australia as toddlers and grew up as
Australians are also being sent to detention
camps such as Christmas Island.
They are deprived of normal rights and
readied for deportation back to New Zealand
if they have been sentenced to more than a
year in prison. One woman who is aged 40,
has lived in Australia for 37 years with her
family, and has Aussi kids is being deported
for shoplifting back to a country she does not
know. Surely, she is Australias responsibility.
We are not asking the Australians
for anything thats unreasonable. Kiwis
living long-term in Australia have lower
unemployment rates and higher participation
in the workforce (78% compared to 68% for
the general population).
They pay literally billions of dollars in
tax each year to the Australian Government.
Australia and New Zealand are meant to be
a Single Economic Market which means
reciprocal rights. All we are asking is for
Australia to treat Kiwis living in Australia
the same way as we treat Aussis living here.

held from October 22 to 25 at The Auckland
Performing Arts Centre (TAPAC) in
Motions Road, Western Springs.
It is the first time the event is being
staged and is for children between 3 and 15
years of age. The festival is the brainchild
of Titirangi resident and Festival Director
Janette Howe. Howe says she came up with
the idea for the event about two years ago
when she was setting up Kidsonscreen, an
organisation that advocates for quality on
screen content for children.
She says the annual event has been an
ongoing success for a number of years and
she is keen to see the Auckland-based event
make similar roads in New Zealand.
The festivals programme includes the
2014 Academy Award movie Mr Hublot,
animated Dutch film Pim and Pom
The Big Adventure, German feature My
Friend Raffi and Canadian film Shana: The
Wolfs Music.
Five films based on books by the late
great author Margaret Mahy will also be
shown at the festival. The Great White
Man-Eating Shark, Keeping House, The
Boy With Two Shadows, The Three Legged
Cat and The Witch in the Cherry Tree
were uncovered in the New Zealand Film
Commissions archives in Wellington and
have since been digitised.
Howe says getting the films in time for
the fledgling event in October is great, but
she says it also illustrates the lack of locally
produced movies for kids.

Hasee Toh Phasee, Ek Villain and

While hes a widely followed

his popularity could especially
be gauged with the welcome he
received at Auckland Airport,
where some of his desi fans

a chat with Taylor, who has won

five Oscars and multiple BAFTA

The actor was mesmerised by the

It is amazingly planned and
very work-friendly. It was great
to see what goes behin d the

wonderful to see how Sir Richard
Taylor is about his work and how
connected and involved he is with

They even deliberated over

They (New Zealand) shoot
way bigger and larger films, but
they are quite open to getting

As tourism ambassador of New

The auspicious Navratri festival is upon us and this is a time to celebrate Shakti
or Prakriti. While we dedicate these nine days to praying to the goddess, it is
important that we continue to do it even after Navratri is over. How do we do
this? The best offering we can make to the goddess is to respect, treasure and
cherish the women in our lives. There is no doubt about the role that women
in play our lives. The love, support, nurturing, strength and so much more that
they offer us day after day as mothers, sisters, partners, friends and daughters is
unparalleled. Let us continue to show the women the love and respect that is due
to them 24x7x365.
There are numerous celebrations, big and small that are being organised all
around the country, and it is heartening to see the community participating in
each of these very enthusiastically.
Amidst all the festivity, we also had the Indian hockey team visiting and while
they were in Christchurch, Indian Weekender caught up with them, and we bring
you a report and some great conversations with the heroes of hockey. We also
bring you a report on the newest rendezvous that is making waves around New
Zealand at the momentSidharth Malhotra who has been appointed as the first

The stars
from India
This years international guests include
Mahipat Kavi, one of Indias foremost
puppeteers and master storyteller, and
Mudra Creation, the Lavani dance group
from Maharashtra State.
Mahipat Kavi
Award-winning puppeteer Mahipat Kavi will
bring some of Indias favourite stories to life at
this years festival.
Mahipat Kavi established his theatre company
Puppets & Plays back in 1975 in Ahmedabad. The
group has since produced many puppet plays,
puppet-serials for television and educational
puppet films on social issues such as family
planning, the environment, and health problems
such as AIDS.
The group has taken part in many puppet festivals
in India and abroad, as well as holding puppet
workshops and exhibitions.

Mudra Creation
One of Indias most beautiful and sensuous
dance traditions from Maharashtra State, Lavani
is a combination of traditional song and dance,
performed to the captivating beat of the dholak, or
two-headed hand drum. The Mudra Creation dance
company was founded in 2005.
Lavani dance draws its inspiration from topics as
varied as society, religion, politics, and especially
romance. Originally, it was used as
a form of entertainment and a morale booster for
weary soldiers in what was once a battle-torn state.
Female dancers wear nine-metre long saris and
heavy jewellery including a wide belt at
the waist. The songs in Lavani are mostly romantic
with teasing lyrics featuring socio-political satire.
Lavani dance dates back to the 1560s, and it was not
until the 1700s that it came into prominence after

For those who attended the Auckland Diwali Festival

last year, you might remember an exciting moment
on Queen Street when performer Shinsil Puthethu
dropped down to one knee and proposed to Athy
Raj at the end of their Diwali street performance!
The two were good friends and neighbours back
in India, and continued their friendship here in
Auckland. Were excited to say that the couple are
now happily married after a beautiful wedding in
India earlier this year.

Helpful tips

Red

Black

Orange

Check out our helpful tips to ensure you have an enjoyable weekend at the Auckland Diwali Festival.

When is Auckland Diwali Festival?

The Auckland Diwali Festival is happening this Saturday 17 and
Sunday 18 October, from noon until 9pm each day at Aotea Square.
We recommend that you allow at least 2-3 hours to enjoy the
performances, sample the food or even buy a gift from the range of
traditional Indian craft stalls. There are also a number of workshops
and exhibitions so add more time if you want to attend one of these.
Where is the festival and how do I get there?
The festival takes place in Aotea Square, Aotea Centre and Queen
St (between Wellesley St and Mayoral Drive).
Public transport is the best way to get to the festival, whether its a
bus, train or ferry. Its often easier and quicker and it helps make
Auckland Diwali Festival 2015 a more sustainable event. Please visit
aucklandtransport.govt.nz for more information and timetables.
For people in wheelchairs or with pushchairs, the easiest place
to be dropped off to get to the celebrations is via Lorne Street,
Wakefield Street, Greys Ave, and Myers Street.
There is also allocated event parking for those in wheelchairs on
Wakefield Street, in addition to Auckland Transports mobility
parking on Myers Street and inside the Civic car park. For more
information on accessibility and to print an accessible-friendly
map, please visit www.aucklandnz.com/diwali/accessibility
What should I bring?
The Auckland Diwali Festival is an outdoor, all-weather event that
takes place in rain or shine. We suggest you wear comfortable
walking shoes and, depending on the weather forecast, you may
need to bring sunscreen or rainproof clothing.
It is also a good idea to bring cash. Most food and craft stallholders
only accept cash for purchases but there are plenty of ATM terminals
located on Queen Street or on your way to the festival.

Other important information

There will be an information and lost children tent in Aotea
Square, as well as Team AKL volunteers walking around the
festival who can provide you with help and information and a
festival programme
St. John will be at the festival in Aotea Square providing first aid
assistance (located in Aotea Sq next to the Town Hall, please see
the festival map)
If you are in a group, its a good idea to agree on a meeting point
should you get separated. We suggest the Waharoa the carved
Mori entranceway in Aotea Square.
No alcohol is permitted at the event.
The Auckland Diwali Festival is a smoke-free event, in line with
Auckland Councils drive to make the regions public outdoor
spaces smoke-free and help create a healthy city for all residents.
This means there will be no smoking in the event space for the
duration of the festival, to help promote a positive smoke-free
message and make all our public events even more child-friendly.
Thank you from the whole Diwali team for supporting this.

Himanshu, also known as Shaun, took

months preparing for the competition and
is now buzzing from the event itself and his
new title.
Originally from a small village in Delhi,
India, Shaun came to New Zealand in 2011 to
complete his chef training.
When asked what inspired him to train as
a chef, Shaun is not entirely sure, but admits
he always liked food, although before coming
to New Zealand he had never seen or heard of

comes from the rich cultural roots he has and
his best creations are a fusion of Indian and
Western tastes.
Listen to Shaun talk about the global
appeal of Indian cuisine and how Indian
flavours create magic.

Raagini Vijaykumar

aagini moved to New Zealand

from Mumbai when she was nine
and is now in her fourth year at
the University of Auckland studying a
Bachelors of Law and Bachelors of Art
conjoint degree.
As an immigrant, Raagini has always
been interested in understanding the
unique place migrant youth holds in
New Zealand.
This interest led to her being selected
for a research scholarship in 2013, which
was being conducted to understand the
ways in which Intimate Partner Violence
is experienced and understood in migrant
Asian and Middle Eastern communities
in New Zealand.
She worked in this project under Dr
David Mayeda, a lecturer at the Sociology
Department at the University of Auckland.
The research particularly focussed on
young women from migrant backgrounds
and shed light on the various issues that
particularly affected them.
The aim of the project is to create
programmes that cater specifically to
migrant youth in schools.
This project was the first of its kind
in New Zealand, and only the second
in the world. Raagini has presented the

findings in various academic seminars

alongside Dr David Mayeda.
She looks forward to sharing the
research findings with our community, in
order to open up a conversation about the
challenges Kiwi Indian youth face.
Raagini has also been part of various
social justice initiatives at the university
and in the wider community.
She greatly values her Indian
background and is honoured to share the
stage with the inspiring speakers at the

Nagras latest book Ramayana was

stopped reading poetry since.

Indian hockey team clinch the

test series against Black Sticks
GAURAV SHARMA

uilding on the successful

European tour where
they defeated France and
Spain, the Indian mens hockey
team eked out a 11 draw against
the New Zealand Black Sticks in
the fourth and final hockey test in
Christchurch on October 11, to win
the series 21.
With this result, the Indian
team finished the series with
one loss, two wins and one draw.
This so because after losing the
first match of the series 02, the
Indians came back strongly to win
the next two matches by margins
of 31 and 32 held in Nelson and
Christchurch respectively.
Chief Coach and Director of
high performance for Indian
Hockey team, Roelant Oltmans,
analysed the final match and
noted, Even though today was
not our best game, we are quite
happy with the overall result
and with what we have achieved
during the South Island tour.
Now our boys are eagerly looking
forward to the Hockey World
League (HWL) Finals to be held in
India in NovemberDecember.
But before that India will
play host to world number one
ranked Australians in a test series
scheduled to give good practice
to both teams for the upcoming
HWL Finals.
Top five conundrums
Even though the team has
produced some good results

30

in the past 1520 months

including wining the Asian gold,
Commonwealth silver, Champions
Trophy semi-final appearance,
and clinching the test series in
Australiaan honest reflection of
Indias current world standing is
what happened at the HWL semifinals in Belgium in July. There
the team finished fourth, behind
Australia, Belgium and England.
These three teams along with
the Netherlands and Germany,
which form the worlds top five
teams, appear technically better
and structurally more sound than
India in present form.
Overall, the Indian hockey
team, though ranked eighth in the
world with Argentina and New
Zealand above it, seems at par
or slightly superior to rest of the
teams except the top five.
So with Rio Olympics due
in August next year, newlyappointed chief coach Oltmans
has to find a way to strengthen

Indias
attacking
prowess,
tighten defence tactics, and most
importantly, improve the teams
efficiency in winning penalty
corners and converting them.
Issues of player indiscipline,
groupism, and disharmonywith
the Gurbaj Singhs nine-month
suspension latest in a series of
episodesneed to be sorted
out too.
Also, it is important that
Oltmans is given time and free
hand, unlike his predecessors,
to mould the team as per his
coaching philosophy. He is the
fifth foreign coach appointed by
Sports Authority of India on the
recommendations of Hockey India
(HI) ever since HI took over the
reins of the game in the country
in 2009. All his predecessors
Paul Van Ass, Jose Brasa, Michael
Nobbs and Terry Walsh, had left
the Indian teams coaching job on
an unceremonious note.

Foreign coaches have had a

sweet and sour relationship
with Hockey India ever since it
was formed in 2009, with Paul
Van Ass, Jose Brasa, Terry
Walch and Michael Hobbs,
all being unceremoniously
shown the door. Is this good
for Indian hockey?
Ideally no. Any coach would
like to have a longer stable reign to
produce the desired results. But all
the coaches you have mentioned
left for different reasons. So
there is no pattern here or any
symptomatic condition. Above all,
I can only talk about myself. I have
an excellent working relationship
with Hockey India and the players.
So dont worry, Ill remain the
coach of Indian hockey team till at
least Rio Olympics.
Ex-Indian coaches recent
reports raise a lot of questions

about Indian teams morale

and our preparations for Rio.
Whats your plan for the team
to recover from the Gurbaj
Singh controversy?
Oh, thats just their individual
assessment. I have been involved
with this team for more than three
years now during my role as the
director of High Performance,
and I dont have any issues with
any of the players. Nor do I see
any groupism or indiscipline in
the team. As regards to Gurbaj

sign for any team if it is dependent

on any one player. And I can
assure you that this Indian team
is not. We have a solid bunch of
talented players who can be the
best in the world. We have been
trying different combinations at
the right flank ever since Gurbajs
departure from our scheme of
things, and I am confident that we
will find the suitable combination
very soon.
Sub-continental hockey was
always known for its flair and
attractiveness. With a string
of foreign coaches now, dont
you think we are just trying
to imitate European style of
hockey, which may not be
good for us in the long run?
Whats the use of playing with
that flair if you dont win anything?
I have always maintained that
Indian hockey must change while
retaining its natural attractiveness
and skills-set. Thats what we
are trying to dofuse Indian
dribbling skills with European
style of short-passing and close
man-to-man marking. We are not
trying to imitate the Europeans,
rather coming up with our own
modified version.
Finally, are we ready for Rio?
Right now, I can say we are
ready for the Hockey World
League Finals, which are due in
just under two months. Lets take
every tournament one-by-one.

Indian team has and will always play as one:

Sardar Singh

captain and one of the
greats of this generation,
Sardar Singh, talked to Gaurav
Sharma after winning the test
series against New Zealand in
Christchurch on October 11. He
spoke about the impact of Hockey
India League (HIL), allegations
of groupism in the team, and the
improvement the team has shown
in mental toughness. Below are
the excerpts:
Saddened by the apathy that
Indians have towards hockey,
former India captain Dhanraj
Pillay once remarked that he
would never advise his son to
take up the game. The current
Indian team also came up with
an advertisement in June, just
before leaving for the Hockey
World League (HWL) semifinals, hinting the same. Do
you think the situation hasnt
improved between now and
then?
No, definitely things have
improved a lot in the last five
years or so, especially with the
introduction of HIL. We shouldnt
compare with cricket or the IPL.
But compared to Dhanraj pajis
time, I would say that hockey
attracts a lot more attention
nowadays. Hockey players do have
recognition, fame and financial
security these days. The sport is
still popular in rural areas. We just
need to bring back the cities into

our fold. But I must add that while

things have improved, it can be
much better. The advertisement
we came out with before the
HWL semi-finals was an appeal of
sorts in that direction. We would
like hockey to become the most
popular sport in India again.

So you think that HIL has

changed the game in India?
Most definitely. In terms of
infrastructure, exposure of Indian
players to international standards,
and taking the game to the masses,
the three editions of the HIL has
been a huge success in my opinion.
A good indication of any events
success these days is its popularity
in the cyberspace, and the number
of likes YouTube videos of HIL
third edition gathered has been a
source of inspiration for us.
But
infrastructure-wise,
are we at par with the top
European nations?
I wouldnt say at par, but
sufficient enough. See, I have
played in the Netherlands, where
they have at least 1,500 good
international quality Astro Turfs.
We cant match that as yet. But we
can make the best use of what we
have got.
Hockey India, too, is taking a
lot of initiatives in this regard. Like
the new Blue and Green Synthetic
Hockey Turf at Sports Authority
of India Southern Centre in
Bangalore. This is being built
especially so that we can prepare

for various international events

including the Rio Olympics. I am
confident that we are moving in
the right direction in developing
hockey
infrastructure
in
the country.
Just after the debacle of
London Olympics, you said
in an interview that the team
lacked
mental
toughness
and argued for a mental
conditioning coach to help
the players. How has been the
progress on that front in the
last three years?
Yes, I remember the interview
and am glad to say that things
have improved a lot.
Our previous coach Terry
Walch paid a lot of emphasis on
mental aspect of the game and
had extensive one-to-one sessions
with all the players, which helped
us a lot. So you can see that unlike
earlier when we use to give away
last-minute goals, we have been
scoring such goals ourselves in
recent times.
Like here in the third test in
Christchurch, Dharamvir scored
the winning goal with less than
five minutes on the clock. With

Black

Orange

todays test being a draw, that

goal effectively decided the
series. Moreover, our present
coach Oltmans is already in talks
with the association to get us a
mental conditioning coach soon
so that the boys are in perfect
shape to handle the pressure of
the Olympics.
Finally,
the
Gurbaj
Singh episode has led to
speculations about groupism
and friction in the Indian
team. Whats your take
on the issue?
I strongly deny the rumours that
there are fissures and groups in
the team. The Indian hockey team
has and will always play as one.
In fact, this is one of the reasons
we have been playing reasonably
well in the last year-and-a-half.
As far as Gurbaj is concerned, of
course we will miss him. But we
will have to make the best of this
situation. We have developed
a pretty solid group of 2728
players who are good enough
to play for India. I am sure we
will find the combination for the
right flank (where Gurbaj used to
play) soon.

Vijender begins his pro-boxing

career on a high

ndias Vijender Singh made

his professional boxing
debut with a bang, defeating
Briton Sony Whiting through a
technical knockout in the third
round at the Manchester Arena
on Saturday.
The Olympic and world
championship medallist began
well, attacked through the
middleweight bout, and finished
off the fight in the penultimate
round when the referee stopped
the contest.
The
29-year-old
Indian
started off confidently, pushing
Whiting into a corner. Vijender
sent down an array of punches,
and the Briton returned them
aggressively, as the first round
seemed even.
Whiting, who had a 21 winloss record in professional boxing
prior to this match, tried to seize
the initiative in the second round,
but Vijender soon took control
and even dropped his guard on
a couple of occasions, virtually
challenging his opponent to have
a go at him.
As the clock ticked, Whiting
found it difficult to match
Vijenders aggression, and even
lost balance and fell on the ropes.
Whiting tried to come back
into the game in the third round
by unleashing a flurry of punches,

Vijender Singh

but Vijender kept his cool and

hit some upper cuts and a few
jabs, which unsettled the Briton,
forcing the referee to stop
the contest.
An elated Vijender later said
it was just a beginning and he
would have to go a long way.
I am very happy. Its just a
beginning; I have to go a long
way. I will work harder and have

to be professional champion
one day.
Vijender said he never got
nervous during the fight. Its new
for me but I have been working
hard. Its going well, I want to
win, win and win.
Vijender thanked his fans,
friends, family and coaches for
standing by him as he began his
journey into professional boxing.

fter losing the first of

their five-match OneDay International (ODI)
series by a slender margin of five
runs against South Africa last
week, India captain Mahendra
Singh Dhoni said it was a game
they should have won.
Chasing a target of 304, the
hosts managed 298/7 in their
quota of 50 overs. Rohit Sharmas
splendid 150-run innings went in
vain at the Green Park ground.
The outcome was not great for
us, there were quite a few things
that went wrong, but I think we
showed great character to fight on
this wicket. We should have won
the game, Dhoni said at the postmatch presentation ceremony.
The skipper rued having
lost one of his best spinners
Ravichandran
Ashwin,
who
injured his fingers while bowling
his fifth over and added that the
fast bowlers should have bowled
better at the death.
It was unfortunate that we
lost Ashwin. We missed Ashs
(Ashwins) six overs that was
crucial because he was our best
spinner... until that point the plan
was working beautifully but I had
to get more overs from Binny
and Raina.
In the end, I thought our
bowlers should have done a bit
better in the slog overs as there

was plenty of reverse swing,

Dhoni said.
The 34-year-old, however,
praised the knocks of Rohit
and Rahane (60) who helped
India inch closer to the target
but regretted that the willowers
failed to pick the gaps when they
needed to.
I thought that partnership
between Rohit and Rahane was
very good, they made it look easy.
It was a bit difficult to bat out
there as it did not come on nicely
if the ball was banged short. We
lost a bit of momentum from the
34th or the 35th over to the 40th
or the 41st over. There were runs
on offer, but we didnt hit the
gaps, he said.
It was a fantastic innings from
Rohit. As I said, it was not easy
and the fast bowlers were getting
reverse swing and he made it
look easy.

Need to spread
awareness about
mental health:
Deepika

ctress
Deepika
Padukone has raised the
importance of spreading
awareness about mental health at
the launch of her NGO.
Maharashtra Chief Minister
Devendra Fadnavis launched
Deepikas NGO Live Love Laugh
on Saturday, October 10, which
will deal with the issue of mental
health. We need to stigmatise
mental illness and spread
awareness about mental health. I
know in the current scenario we

lead stressful lives but you have
to keep reminding yourself that
it is important to live, love and
laugh. After all that is what life
is all about, Deepika said during
the launch.
Most
importantly
for
people like me who have had
an experience with anxiety and
depression, I think it is important
to know that there is hope,
she added. Deepika also spoke
about her depression and how her
parents and loved ones helped
her. Talking about the depression
of her elder daughter, Deepikas
mother Ujjala Padukone said,
I detected the symptoms in
Deepika, and I thought it may be
due to some boyfriend issue. But
then I knew the depression is due
to mental and physical stress and
we realised that we should take
help from a psychiatrist.
Deepikas
father
Prakash
Padukone added, I was worried
about the health of my daughter
and we wanted her to be fine.
The Piku star agreed that
depression has changed her.
A lot of experiences we go
through in life makes you learn
something and it makes you into
a better person, she said.

A film on me will be definitely

The actor also said that he

Earlier I used to work on my

now the birthday has become a

Indian cinema in itself is in a
phase where several film-makers

sportspersons. After movies on
boxer MC Mary Kom, sprinter

Pyaar Ka
Panchnaama
not an adult
movie: Kartik

ctor Kartik Aryan says

upcoming

Pyaar
Ka
Punchnama 2 does not aim to
project itself as an adult comedy.
Pyaar Ka Panchanaama 2
has nothing like adult dialogues
or objects. This is a situational
comedy film, not an adult comedy.
There is not a single pointless
scene in the movie, not anything
is irrelevant, the actor said at the
films quirky promotion.
Kartik, who was the scenestealer in the prequel, said, This
movie is about a boy and a girl

when they come together [and]
how boys get stuck into the
relationship. We have just tried to
show various things that happen
in a relationship.
The dialogues are used as
mostly two boys converse with
each other, so as such there is
nothing called adult.
Talking about the expectation
for the movie, he said, It will
be wrong to compare with its
prequel. This film is different;
characters are new so this is going
to be a fresh movie for viewers. I
feel Pyaar Ke Panchnaama 2
will be regarded as a unique and
successful film.
In the prequel, Kartiks sevenminute famous monologue has
been revamped for Pyaar Ka
Punchnama 2. While actresses
Nushrat
Bharucha,
Sonalli
Sehgall and Ishita Sharma have
been cast again, the movie
will see two new actors Omkar
Kapoor and Sunny Singh besides
Kartik Aaryan.
Directed by Luv Ranjan, Pyaar

produced by Panaroma Studios,
