Sharada Navaratri
Sharada Navaratri, as it is called since it occurs during the fall season (Sarad Ritu) is one of the most popular Hindu festivals spanning
a period of nine nights. The Goddess in the form of the Universal
Mother is commonly worshipped during the nine nights and ten days
and hence it is also known by the name of Devi Navaratri. Three
aspects of the Divine Mother, namely Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati
are worshipped during the nine nights, the tenth day being celebrated
as Vijaya Dasami. It is considered auspicious to start new ventures,
especially in the field of education, on Vijaya Dasami. Reading the
Durga SaptaSati (also known as Devi Mahaatmyam) and Ramayanam
is also common during the Navaratri. Special Pujas are scheduled in
the temple during the ten days. Devotees are encouraged to participate personally in the Sahasranama Archana daily. (Sponsorship is
not a requirement for participation in this archana).

Sri Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma was the Maharaja of the state of Travancore in India. Besides
being an able ruler, he was a patron of music and a musician himself.
He encouraged both broad systems of Indian music, Hindustani and
Carnatic music, though he was essentially a connoisseur of the
Carnatic music tradition. He is credited with composing over 400
compositions in Carnatic music as well as Hindustani music. The
king was fluent in a number of languages such as Malayalam,
Sanskrit, Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Tamil, Oriya
and English. The festival will begin with a customary group singing of Bhavayami Raghuramam ragamalika and three hindustani
compositions of Swathi Thirunal. The practice sessions will be
coordinated by T. Prabhakar. If interested, you may join the
group singing practice from 2:00 - 4:00 pm in the Aakaar Room
