External Alarms
This chapter reviews the external alarm functions which are required to maintain the network including
current alarms and sending and receiving loopback cells. It is organized as follows:

External Alarms Configuration


Cisco 8110 supports interface alarms per ANSI & ETSI standards for multiplexing equipment. The
Alarm connector pinout is described in Appendix C.
The alarm menu can be accessed through the Configuration Menu.
Step 1

When you login to the Cisco 8110 and type ? at the prompt, the Root Menu is displayed.

Step 2

Type any portion of the word configuration and press RETURN. Then type ? and press RETURN.
The Configuration Menu is displayed. Enter ext_alarms to display the screen shown in Figure 10-1.
The parameters are defined in Table 10-1.

Note

After you have executed any of the following commands, you can check your entry for that
command. Simply type show at the prompt and press RETURN. The command, together

sets the external alarm output relay alarm state

Figure 10-2 shows the External Alarm Configuration display.


SHOW - This command displays the external alarms configuration. At the prompt, type the command
and press return. The type of information shown in Figure 10-2 is displayed.

ADMIN This command sets the external alarm administrative state. At the prompt, type the command
and press RETURN. The following prompt is displayed:

NAME This command sets a 32 character alarm name At the prompt, type the command and press
RETURN. The following prompt is displayed:

ONVC This command selects a VC condition for external alarm generation. At the prompt, type the

OUT_DCL_LEVEL This command selects external alarm output level. At the prompt, type the
command and press RETURN. The following prompt is displayed:

External Alarms Maintenance


The External Alarms Maintenance Menu commands are accessible from the Maintenance Menu.
Step 1

When you log into the Cisco 8110 and type ? at the prompt, the Root menu is displayed.

Step 2

Type any portion of the word maintenance and press RETURN Then type ? and press RETURN. The
Maintenance Menu is displayed.

Step 3

Type alarms to display the submenu shown in Figure 10-3.
