2 Grade NEWS
Mrs. Gartons 2nd grade class
investigates the ins and outs
of FRIENDSHIP!
April 15, 2015

Students will find out:

!

Who can be a friend

How to show someone

you would like to be
friends

How to handle bosses

and bullies

The best ways to be a

friend and the ways NOT
to be a friend

Ways to settle an
argument with a friend

Dear Parents,
Friendship is a really important component to everyday life for your
second grader! Learning how to navigate friendship, and everything
that comes with it can be daunting. Arguments, bossing and bullying
are some of the tougher parts of friendship and its important that your
child know the skills for handling these situations.
We are going to investigate friendship through the book How To Be A
Good Friend by Laurie Krasny Brown and Marc Brown. Through
exploring this book, your child will find out about making friends, how
to keep them and the not so easy parts of friendship.
This book will give your child the opportunity to reflect on their own
friendships and practice some new techniques that will be valuable in
building their interpersonal skills!
You can use the flyer on the following page as a home guide to
reinforce your childs friendship-building skills. Ask them what they
are learning everyday! Youll be amazed at what a great friend your
child knows how to be!

Thank you for being involved with

your childs education!

Talking Out an Argument

Here are some steps to help you talk out an argument:
1. Stop arguing

2. Calm down. Take deep

breaths, count backwards,
relax your muscles, or leave
the group for a minute.

4. Everyone gets a turn to

tell, not yell, their story and
be listened to without
interruption.

5. Think up lots of ideas for

solving the problem

3. Agree to talk it out

And most importantly

! Remember, arguments are allowed,

but meanness is not!
! In order to please everyone at least a little, you
may not get exactly what you want.

6. Try to choose the best

solution, the one that
everyone agrees on and
thinks will work.
7. Decide how to go about
carrying out the plan.

8. Do it!
