Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts
about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.
Student Learning Objective:
1) Demonstrate listening comprehension of reading material.
2) Complete an idea in written form demonstrating knowledge of
invented and conventional spelling.
3) Revise drafts and create final drafts.
Lesson Development:
1) Read Oh, The Places Youll Go! By Dr. Seuss.
2) Discuss places to go and encourage children to think beyond
the everyday places. (i.e. college, Europe, New York, etc.)
3) Teacher will write a dictated brainstormed list of places by
students on the board (separating proper nouns and common
nouns).
4) Students will copy Oh, the places I will go! I will go from the
board and then continue independently to write where they
would like to go.
5) Students will peer edit and turn in their rough drafts to the
teacher for final editing.
6) Return papers to students edited and ready for final drafts.
7) Students will copy final drafts and illustrate their sentences.
8) Create a class book entitled Oh, The Places We Will Go!

Initiation:
Ask the students about different places they have been to.
After hearing some responses, ask if any had been out of the state?

Differentiation:
For students at a lower level of writing, the following link would be a
great alternative to the writing assignment. Allow students to create of
poem with some of their favorite words from the book may be a more
reasonable assignment for some.

Closure:
Using the illustration and their stories, the book will be made. Share
the book with the class, and then allow other teachers to read it to
their classes for Read Across America or Dr. Seuss Birthday, March
2nd.
Students will have seen their progress from rough draft to final draft.
This will likely be their first writing assignment ever, so it will be
challenging but exciting. After the book is made, the teacher can share
it with the class and read all about the fun places their classmates
hope to see one day.

Technology Resources:
1) Padlet can be used to allow students to share the places that they
have visited. Then create another padlet to have them share places
they would like to go:
