WMC High School Wrestlers
Had Positive Season

W
est Morris Central High School head wrestling
coach Ken Rossi certainly had his student-ath-
letes motivated to get good things done on the
mat during the 2009-2010 season. Just as importantly, the
wrestlers were self-motivated and the results were quite
positive. They finished the season with an overall record of
14-9 and advanced to the semifinal round of NJSIAA North
II Group III sectional tournament.
Coach Rossi recalls some of the major triumphs from
this past winter.
“We defeated Mendham 37-24 on January 8th,’’ Rossi
said. “We always have a highly competitive match with
Mendham and it is a goal to get a win over our sister school.
Jefferson is one of the premier programs in Morris County
and it is a step in the right direction beating them (34-32).
On January 16, we defeated Warren Hills and at the time Long Valley Brownie Troop 518 showed their "Passion for Fashion" at the Randolph Service Center. The girls practiced sketching and

“We defeated Millburn, 35-22, in the North II Group III
sectional quarterfinals. The win over Millburn propelled us
to the semifinals for the first time since the 1990’s.’’ Washington Township Recreation Soccer Squirts & Spring Tennis
West Morris was defeated by Roxbury in the sectional

semifinal round. The three captains were major factors for
the success of WMC this year. Seniors Herbie Skinner (189
pounds) and Mark Fleming (145) as well as junior Mike
Sickles (130) earned captainships for West Morris.

ashington Township Soccer Squirts program
introduces soccer for boys and girls of age 3 to 5.
Children will learn the fundamentals of soccer
through a program of non-competitive activities and fun
games. Activities are designed to evoke a child's imagina-
tion in which they can Find Nemo, send Shrek into a spin
or capture Jellyfish with Sponge Bob Square Pants. Every
session is designed to promote coordination, movement and
balance and most importantly Fun, Fun, Fun. The soccer
program runs from April 20 to May 25, once a week on
Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Washington Township Spring Tennis program intro-
duces tennis to players ages 3 and up. Groups will be
formed based on age and ability. Fee is based on level and
age. The instruction has a low student-to-teacher ratio and
is provided by fully certified professional staff and former
college players. Space is limited and is filled on a first
come, first serve basis. The course begins April 5th and
runs for eight weeks.

Chester Lioness Club Collects
Food for Chester Food Pantry
T
he Chester Lioness Club on behalf of with the
Chester Food Pantry will be collecting canned and
non perishable food items as well as lasagna and
hams for the holidays for needy families in the area. Local
supermarkets are presently offering discounted of free
hams and lasagna to patrons who exceed certain spending
limitations. Anyone who would like to donate their free
ham or lasagna, and/or canned and non perishable food

The 13th Annual
Great Backyard Bird Count
T
he 13th annual Great Backyard Bird
Count took place on February 12th -
15th. Families and nature lovers
across the country were asked to spend at
least 15 minutes outdoors on one or more of
these days to identify and count the birds
that they saw. The goal is to get people
interested in birds and nature, as well as to
provide information about the distribution
and abundance of birds from year to year.
The data collected will be useful for future
conservation plans.
The data collected by individuals will be
collected until March and will then be tal-
lied. In 2009 there were 619 species identi-
fied from the 93,600 checklists that were
entered by participants. These tallies as well
as online maps, lists, photos, and videos
from participants can be viewed on the web
site at www.birdcount.org.
The event is hosted by the National
Audubon Society and Cornell Lab or
Ornithology, and sponsored by Wild Birds
Unlimited.
This year in our backyard, my husband
Rusty was luck enough to encounter two
pileated woodpeckers, and I counted four
Northern Cardinals, three dark eyed juncos,
Two Turkey Vultures, two American
Crows, and one black-capped chickadee.

Enrollment In Our Schools Down 251 Students, the Budget Should Decrease Too...

E
nrollment in Long Valley Schools K-
8 is down 251 students since 2004.
That's the equivalent of all the chil-
dren in Old Farmers Elementary School.
Enrollment numbers are going to decrease
further in coming years due to the imple-
mentation of the Highlands Act.
But, the question remains. " Will the
Board of Education and administration cut
wasteful spending and reduce the budget
for 2010-2011?" No, read on. In 2004,
Washington Township educated 3023 stu-
dents for $32,513,848 ($10,755.29 per
child). This year, Washington Township is
educating only 2,772 students, yet spending
$42,979,138 to do so ($15,590.40 per
child). Two hundred and fifty one less chil-
dren, ten million dollars more in expenses.
I believe it is in the best interests of the
community in a recession economy, that the
BOE review its spending from the ground
up, with a first year goal to return spending
to the parameters of 2004, adjusted for
inflation, of $12,308.34 per student. This
would call for a 2010-2011 budget of not
more than $35.5 million. Instead of reduc-
ing the budget the BOE is proposing all
day kindergarten to make up the difference
of lost students and increasing the budget,
instead of reducing class sizes.
Having said all of this, the question is:
How does the Washington Township BOE
reduce it's budget with out taking money
away from teachers and children? Simple,
consolidation of services and out sourcing.
Does Long Valley need two BOE adminis-
trations? One for West Morris Central High
School and one for the K-8? No! Why not
have one central BOE for Mendhams,
Chesters and Long Valley?
Another cost saving idea is to out source
janitorial services. Does Long Valley really
need to pay $40,000-$90,000 per janitor,
plus benefits and overtime? No, these are
entry level jobs that should pay $28,000--
$34,000. Why not out source buses? Long
Valley K-8 already uses an out side vendor
for the lunch program.
Many school districts in NJ have real-
ized dramatic savings by consolidating
resources with neighboring districts and
townships, outsourcing administration,
transportation and maintenance functions to
private contractors, eliminating wasteful
programs, reviewing their needs for sites
and facilities, and generally returning their
mission to spending money on the students
in the classrooms. All outsourced employ-
ees have to pass the same background

checks as do school employees. There is no
downside to outsourcing and consolidation.
Let me make my self perfectly clear, all
of these dramatic savings could be realized
with out taking one dollar out of the class
room. Other school districts all across the
state are saving tax payer dollars by negoti-
ating that teachers, secretaries, janitors, and
administration pay a larger percentage of
their health-care benefits. Yes, it is time for
all government employees contribute to
their benefits package and get their pay
scale and increases in line in with the pri-
vate sector economy.
Now, before you roll your eyes I would
like to state: I'm not against working par-
ents who need day care services for their
children. All day Kindergarten could be a
good alternative for these parents. But, the
question is; Should Long Valley K-8
schools have all an day Kindergarten when
tax revenues to the township are down?
People have lost their jobs, they are strug-
gling to pay their mortgages and property
taxes. Should senior citizens on fixed
incomes foot the bill for this program? No,
tax payers can simply not afford it.
Long Valley's biggest problem with it's
K-8 school system is that the Middle school
does not rise to the level of educational
standards of West Morris Central High
School. Thankfully, interim superintendent
John Sakala is no longer employed in Long
Valley, his term has expired. Sakala, a poor
choice for our district, showed us his
inability to provide leadership and improve
educational standards. Last summer John
Sakala let middle school principal Mark
Ippolito speak for the district in the newspa-
pers when there was a controversy concern-
ing low test scores.
There was and still is a swirling contro-
versy over a math proficiency test given by
WMCHS to the incoming freshman class of
2009, when they were eighth graders in
middle school. Were the students who were
exposed to Connected and Everyday Math
(CM EM) in 7th and 8th grade ready for the
rigors of HS Math? No! They are currently
taking Algebra, disguised as remedial math
classes, "not necessarily called remedial
math classes," quote, acting principal
WMCHS, Gil Moscatello. ( the math profi-
ciency question is going to come up again
this year). Sakala, in one article was quoted
as saying that traditional math in some way
was obsolete and irrelevant. He called it,
"old math". Yet, test scores on the NJ ASK
were down during John Sakala's tenure.
Recently, a parent with concerns about
low math test scores wrote on a local mes-
sage board, "The NJAsk scores were low
enough to put them on the State's watch list
for No Child Left Behind! Math especially
was low. Is the Everyday Math and
Connected Math really working as the
administration has touted in years past?
They always pointed to the NJAsk scores as
proof! I had attended the BOE meeting at
the end of last year when the numbers were
presented and this time they dismissed the
low scores."
This is the typical response you get from
Board of education and administration
members if you challenge them or disagree
with them. This dismissal by the BOE and
administration at a board meeting of a par-
ents concern over test scores is typical of
the Republican liberals that currently sit on
the BOE, led by BOE president Michele
Skurchak and assistant superintendent
Leslie Schwarz. In an email to me last year,
BOE member Chance Healy wrote.
"Another viable option would be to move-

past, Chance Healy is seen regularly with
Kevin Nedd collecting election results at
the town hall).
This is the typical response you get from
Board of education and administration
members if you challenge them or disagree
with them. So, with out reservation I ask
your help holding the Washington Twp
BOE administration and board members
accountable by expecting the following;
BOE and administration, stop proposing
more liberal agenda spending schemes.
Enrollment in our schools is down; let that
be reflected in this year's budget. BOE and
administration; raise our children's mathe-
matical educational standards to the
Singapore level, so our children don't fall
behind preparing for standard HS level
math courses (The are no Connected
Algebra or Connected Geometry math
classes in HS). Give the children the funda-
mental skills and the opportunities they will
need to get through HS and access better
colleges.
Leslie Schwarz stop spoon feeding the
public and Board members the lies that
swirl around your liberal agenda. Which has
resulted in lower test scores and the dumb-
ing down of our children. Ms. Schwarz
retire for the sake of the children. Michele
Skurchak, resign as president of Board of
Education, your partisanship and insatiable
appetite for the liberal agenda is destroying
our schools.
Board of Education members elect new
leadership with the vision and foresight to
make our schools the best in the state. Let's
hope that incoming Superintendent Jeff
Mohre will provide the leadership and
vision to make our schools the best in the
state, something that is currently missing in

David Ettenberg and his family established the 100-acre
Camp Shane in 1968 as the first co-ed weight loss camp for
children in the U.S. When Ettenberg’s grandmother visited
the former bungalow colony for the first time her reaction
was “this is a shayna place,” which in Yiddish translates to
mean “beautiful,” and thus the name Camp Shane was
established.
About 500 campers can attend at one time and can enroll
for three, six or nine week sessions. Boys and girls are sep-

Can You Rewrite Criminal History?

Y
ou cannot rewrite history – or can
you? One charged with or convict-
ed of a criminal offense or a crime
may request that the record be expunged.
Expungement treats the prior record as if it
never happened, with few exceptions.
There are many reasons why one may
wish to expunge a criminal history. In a
post-September 11th world, a criminal
record, or even an arrest not resulting in a
conviction, may prevent one from consider-
ation for employment or applications to rent
real estate. Similarly, many occupations
may require a professional license from a
government agency: for example, attorney,
realtor, nurse, certified public accountant,
school bus driver and cosmetician, just to
name a few. Depending on the crime, a
conviction could prohibit the issuance of
such a license. Also, a criminal record
could prevent one from obtaining a firearms
identification card, which is required for
purchasing a firearm. An expungement
may remove a criminal record as an obsta-
cle to employment, licensing or other civil
programs.
An expungement does not destroy or
delete a prior arrest or conviction. Rather,
the record is segregated so that it cannot be
accessed by an ordinary search. With few
exceptions, if an application for expunge-
ment is granted, the arrest, conviction and
any proceedings related are deemed by law
to not have occurred. This entitles the per-
son who has had a record expunged to deny
the existence of an arrest or conviction
when completing a job, school or other type
of application.
New Jersey classifies criminal activity
into two categories: crimes and offenses.
Crimes are more severe than the lesser cat-
egories of criminal offenses. There are lev-
els of severity within both categories of
crimes and offenses. New Jersey does not
classify criminal activity as a felony or mis-
demeanor, language often used by other
states. In addition, most municipalities
have their own laws, known as local ordi-
nances.
When applying for expungement, one
must wait a certain period of time after the
date of conviction, release from prison, jail,
parole or probation, whichever is later. If
an applicant has been convicted of a crime,

than two offenses. Generally, the same
exceptions and bars to expungement that
apply to adults also apply to juveniles.
Certain young adult drug offenders can
sometimes apply in as little as one year
from the date of their conviction.
Motor vehicle offenses such as speeding,
driving while intoxicated, driving without
auto insurance or possession of a controlled
dangerous substance in a motor vehicle,
cannot be expunged because they are not
criminal convictions. Similarly, domestic
violence proceedings, applications for a
temporary restraining order or a final
restraining order are civil proceedings and
not criminal and therefore, they cannot be
expunged. Also, findings of not guilty by
reason of insanity or for lack of mental
capacity are not eligible for expungement.
Not every crime or arrest can be
expunged. For example, records of convic-
tion for criminal homicide, kidnapping, cer-
tain drug distribution crimes, sex crimes,
robbery, arson and related offenses, perjury
and like crimes may not be expunged. Also,
records of conviction of any crime commit-
ted by a person holding public office shall
not be expunged if the crime involved or
touched upon such office.
To apply for an expungement, one must
file a petition, together with a filing fee,
with the Superior Court. The applicant
must sign and certify that the information
contained in the application is true while
acknowledging that if it is willfully false,
the applicant may be subject to punishment.
The applicant does not need to show a par-
ticular need or purpose for the expunge-
ment. The Court will then sign an Order
scheduling a date for a hearing which must
be held between thirty-five and sixty-five
days. During that time, many government
agencies are entitled to receive a copy of the
application and be given the opportunity to
oppose the expungement. Those agencies
include the State Police, the Attorney

General’s Office, the County Prosecutor,
the Judge of the Municipal Court if the
applicant was convicted there, the County
Sheriff, and the Chief of Police in the
municipality where the offense occurred. If
the applicant was on probation or parole,
the respective department must receive a
copy of the application. If the applicant was
confined, one must also serve the place
where he or she was incarcerated. Victims
of criminal activity are not entitled to notice
and therefore are not served.
On the date of the hearing, if no agency
has objected, the Court can grant the appli-
cation without the need of the applicant
appearing. If a government agency does
object, then the Court will conduct a hear-
ing to determine whether the objection is
sufficient to bar the expungement. If the
application is granted, the applicant will
receive a signed court Order, which then
must be served upon all of the previously
listed government agencies. Once the New
Jersey State Police receive the Order, they
will send the applicant a letter acknowledg-
ing receipt of the Order. The letter will also
indicate that the State Police records have
been corrected and that the State Police
Law Talk Today.TV is a public access local cable show devoted solely to Sussex and

Although expungements segregate crim-
inal records so that they cannot be accessed,
some commercial databases now contain
more than one hundred million criminal
records. The commercial databases are not
always updated as quickly as the govern-
ment records and sometimes expunged
records now often turn up in criminal back-
ground checks ordered by employers and
landlords. Persons aware of prior convic-
tions and with knowledge of the expunge-
ment who divulge the existence of those
prior criminal proceedings commit a crimi-
nal offense. That offense may be punish-
able by up to six months in the county jail,
up to $1,000.00 fine and court costs.
There are many nuances when consider-
ing expungement. One should consult with
a qualified attorney when considering such
an application.

for platelets and blood is constant in spite of
donation fluctuations caused by winter
weather and other factors. Hospital use of

Local Teen Sheds Weight, Gains Motivation, Thanks to Camp Shane

M
ichael of Flanders will no
longer be one of the three chil-
dren in America who is obese
thanks to his encouraging family and a
camp who has taught him how to live a
healthier life.
The 13-year old attended Camp Shane
in Ferndale, NY, for nine weeks last sum-
mer and feels much healthier and confi-
dent than ever before. In existence for
42 years, Camp Shane is the
longest running co-ed weight
loss camp in the world for
overweight children and
teens.
According to recent sta-
tistics, the number of chil-
dren who are obese or
overweight in the
United States has
tripled in the last 30 years.
Childhood obesity
impacts nearly 1/3 of chil-
dren - such a concerning
percentage that First Lady
Michelle Obama has iden-
tified this as one of her
causes to help obesity in
the nation. Many of these
children also have high
cholesterol, high blood pres-
sure and diabetes.
“Seventeen percent are
obese,” says Ziporah Janowski co-owner of Camp
Shane. “That is a very, very frightening statistic.
“If parents don’t help get their kids get control of
their weight when they’re young, it gets worse and it
affects their health,” she says. “Their lives are in
danger. Kids are living a shorter life and it’s all
because of obesity. And as children become adults,
their health problems are overwhelming this coun-
try’s health care system and driving up medical and
insurance costs that are already unaffordable.
“This is a tough topic for parents,” continues
Janowski, and “often something the whole family
needs to address. When their kids are unhealthy or
in pain, they are too. We need to get the whole fam-
ily on track.”
Parents can help their children by sending them to
Camp Shane in New York. The camp fights child-
hood obesity by offering children ages 7-17 and
young women from 18-25 – a fun camp experience
that involves nutrition education, weight loss tips,
dieting information, fitness programs, exercise,
weight loss, self-esteem building, .optional cogni-
tive behavioral therapy. exciting activities and last-
ing friendships. The program is simple and easy for
children to follow.
The experience for Michael has been life-chang-
ing.
The eighth grader of Mount Olive Middle School
lost 48 pounds during the nine weeks he attended
Camp Shane, from the end of June until the middle
of August. He dropped from a size 40 and 262
pounds to a size 34 and 214 pounds.
Seven months later, Michael has maintained the
weight he lost from camp by eating healthier foods,
smaller proportions and exercise.
The camp “taught me how to eat good and how to
lose weight,” describes Michael, who attended the
camp with several hundred other children facing
similar challenges.
“It is a good experience if you are overweight,”
he says. “You can lose weight and get healthier from
it.” I thought it was good doing all of the sports and
also being around other kids that were overweight.”
Michael described a typical day at Camp Shane.
Kids awoke at 7:45 a.m., ate breakfast, had three
morning activities, ate lunch, had three afternoon
activities, showered, ate dinner, evening activity,
free time, and then to bed.
Activities include sports such as soccer, softball,
tennis, hockey, volleyball, paintball, swimming and
basketball; as well as nutrition and cooking classes;
exercise classes such as aerobics and kickboxing
and guidance counseling sessions.
Campers are given three portion controlled meals
a day with snacks after lunch and dinner. A typical
breakfast includes fruit, yogurt and a small milk; a
pizza bagel for lunch; and chicken parmesan with a
small salad for dinner. Snacks include fruit and 100-
calorie packs.
“I was hungry the first week, but after a while
you get used to it,” he says.
Michael used to come home from school and eat
anything he wanted but after attending Camp Shane
he wants to eat healthier food and smaller portions.
“I used to eat a lot of junk food when I got home
from school like candy but now I don’t,” says
Michael. “I eat 100-calorie packs, yogurt and fruit.
“It taught me how to eat better and eat healthier
than I have before,” he continues. “I eat differently;
I don’t eat the same things and I eat less. I try to keep
calories under a certain amount.”
Michael has also learned the importance of exer-
cise.
“I’ll go on the treadmill downstairs,” he says. “I
try to exercise everyday” whether it’s for 30 minutes
or for 10 minutes.
Michael realized he was overweight and had tried
other methods like Weight Watchers, but he says “it
didn’t work cause I’d just go off of it.”
Besides all of the knowledge he gained about
nutrition, Michael gained a lot more friends as far as
Connecticut and Florida and has kept in touch with
them. He hopes to return to Camp Shane this sum-
mer to see his friends and continue to reach his
weight-loss goals.
“I would like to lose another 35 pounds,” admits
Michael who is five-feet, 10.5 inches tall, so he
could weigh between 180-190 pounds.
Although he says he is still overweight, Michael
feels great about his accomplishment.
“I feel good,” he says. “I feel better about my
appearance; I don’t feel like people look at me the
same way.”
Michael’s mother, Mary, is so pleased how the
camp has helped her son.
“I would highly recommend it to anyone,” says
Mary. “It’s so important for these kids to lose weight
especially as a child before health issues set in.”
“Camp Shane saved my son's life,” attests Mary.
“Michael was extremely obese and on the verge of
becoming diabetic and with high blood pressure
(even though his blood pressure is still high) last
summer when he decided it was time to do some-
thing. Camp Shane saved his life by showing him
the health benefits of losing weight and keeping it
off by changing his mind and body.”
She says “the decision to send him was the best
thing we ever did. We knew we had to do something.
Our entire family benefited from his experience at
camp.”
Mary and her family got to spend a “parents
weekend” with Michael at Camp Shane in which
they attended a seminar to speak with nutritionists
and fitness instructors and experience a portion-con-
trolled meal.“We were full,” she says surprisingly.
“It shows to prove that we do overeat.”

“which we have used over the past few months. Our
family now makes a conscious decision about our
food choices” such as whole wheat breads and pas-
tas, turkey breast and chicken.

Movie Show Biz Started in New Jersey with Edison’s Movie Inventions

N
othing is as exciting as watching Oscar night from
Hollywood where the red carpet is rolled out and the
movie stars appear. However, California was not
the start of the movie studio industry. New Jersey was the
first in the entire WORLD to have a movie studio. That’s
because, New Jersey had the greatest innovations being
generated by Thomas Edison, his factories and his staff of
inventors and engineers.
In February of 1888, Eadweard Muybridge, a famous
photographer stopped by Edison’s lab in West Orange. He
wanted to partner Edison's phonograph invention with his
"Zoopraxiscope" machine to combine sight with sound.
Edison was more fascinated with Muybridge’s moving
image concept than he was with his Zoopraxiscope. He
gave this idea to his employee William K.L. Dickson.
Dickson an English engineer often pleaded Edison to
approve experiments for moving pictures. Edison simply
wasn't interested in the motion picture ideas or even work-
ing with Dickson initially but was swayed to give him the
project to work on in 1888. The result was the Kinetograph
camera and the Kinetoscope viewer both patented in 1891.
December 1892 the first motion picture studio located in
West Orange NJ was unveiled with a final construction cost
of $637.67. Thomas Edison was the architect of this com-
pletely black hulking wood and tarpaulin structure. He pro-
moted it as the “Kinetographic Theater.” But its comic
name the “Black Maria” (popular nickname for the police
paddy wagon) became the name that stuck with everyone
since the structure was black too and had wheels. Filming
movies at the Black Maria studio was real men’s work. The
Kinetograph a huge wooden camera was the size of an aver-
age doghouse that Edison even called it “The Doghouse.”
The camera was so large it took 2 men to move it. The stu-
dio’s roof opened to allow the sunlight in. Sunlight was the

only light source bright enough to register an image on the
slow film emulsion. If the sun’s light was on an inconven-
ient side, the Black Maria simply rotated on casters to face
the best position.
New Jersey’s Black Maria studio churned out the first
movies produced in the United States. They were truly
short films - none of them exceeded 30 seconds and they
were viewed like today’s MP3 players for individual view-
ing only. The Kinetoscope viewer also had a second name
too called the Peep Show Machine. For the cost of a nick-
el dropped into the slot, the Peeper was given a moment of
personal entertainment by peeping through a magnifying
glass and viewing the moving action of a 50-foot continu-
ous loop of 35mm film housed inside a wooden contrap-
tion. In 1894 the first Kinetoscope (Peep Show) Parlor
opened in Manhattan.
Edison finally closed the Black Maria in 1901 upon
completion of his brand new glass-topped studio in New
York City. But the November 1903 Edison film, The Great
Train Robbery was shot at various outdoor locations. It
was a one-reeler action flick, 10 minutes long, 14-scenes,
directed and photographed by Edwin S. Porter. Not one
scene was filmed on the western expanse of Wyoming but
places such as Dover, West Orange, Essex County Park,
Orange Mountains, and the Lackawanna railroad of New
Jersey. The movies studios may have moved to
Hollywood, but pioneer movie history remains in New
Jersey. You can still view the Black Maria, the
Kinetoscope – Peep Show Machine; the Kinetograph –
Doghouse Camera along with some original Peep Show
films at the Edison Museum. Open Wednesday through

urves of Chester is encouraging
women in the area to show their
philanthropic strength by participat-
ing in the annual Curves Food Drive. And,
even though donating food to families in
need is its own reward, the club is offering
compelling incentives for both existing and
potential members who participate.
From March 1 to 31, Curves of Chester
will collect non-perishable items and mon-
etary donations for food banks in the local
area. The goal, according to Catherine
Ottilio of Curves of Chester, is for the com-
munity to come together to help families in
need. "At the core of our business is the
message that women are stronger when
they rally together, and that is the point we
hope to bring home with our food drive,"
said Ottilio. "We want to show our commu-
nity just how powerful the generosity of our
members can be."
According to Ottilio, members who
donate a bag of groceries or make a mini-
mum donation of $30 during the month of

he Leprechauns were in full force
this past Saturday when the Knights
of Columbus and St Lawrence Parish
co-hosted their annual St Patrick’s Day
Dinner Dance on Saturday March 6th.
Wearin’ of the Green was an understatement
as the parish hall was tastefully decorated in
Irish regalia, the music was exceptionally
good..if not great, the food excellent and
basically a good time for everyone who
attended. The proceeds of the event will
benefit charitable and scholarship needs for
both the Knights and St Lawrence. We
would like to thank the following for their
gracious donation of grand and door prizes.

he was 28-8 and won the District 1 title.
Herbie is a strong and agile athlete who car-
ries himself as a leader. Mark is a four-year
starter who has been wrestling since he was
young. He has excellent conditioning and
stepped up big in many matches during the
year. For example, in the Warren Hills win
he defeated one of Warren Hills’ dominant
wrestlers, Anthony Gaito, 9-4 in overtime.
Mark finished the season with a record of
27-9.
“Mike is the hardest working individual
on the team. He wins the team run every
day and drills his technique like he is on a
mission. He is also a high honor roll stu-
dent. Mike leads by example and finished
the season at 27-11.’’
Several freshmen were in the varsity
lineup for WMC and showed that they were
able to deal with the pressure of the situa-
tion.

tinual improvement all season and proved
to be huge contributors to the team. The
coaches knew they were talented at the start
of the year, but all four surpassed our
expectations and had outstanding seasons.
Fleming finished at 23-12, Sickles was 29-
9, Carcuffe was 19-14, and Matthews had a
record of 25-13.
“Junior Josh Maka (152), senior Matt
Tedona (140) and senior Chris Hill (215)
also showed great improvement over the
season. All three individuals won key bouts
during dual meets this year that enabled the
team to be successful.’’
Rossi believes that more success is very
possible for the program in 2010-2011.
“We have optimism for next season
because the guys collectively have a
tremendous work-ethic,’’ Rossi said. “They
go at a premium pace every day and that
pays off come the post-season. Also, we
return six Region 1 qualifiers, including
junior Aron Sabino (140) who was a
District 1 finalist, as well as some promis-
ing underclassmen on junior varsity.’’

Chester History to be Chronicled in
"Chester's Beginnings" Program
T
he first in a series of historical pro-
grams titled, "Chester's Beginnings"
will be given by Joan S. Case of
Chester. The first presentation will be held
at the First Congregational Church, 30
Hillside Road in Chester on Friday, April 23
at 7 p.m.
The program is being sponsored by the
church's Christian artist group, "In My
Father's Garden," and will deal with
Chester's early history. A few of the local
churches in existence now had their begin-
nings in a little log cabin in the Ralston
area. This will be touched upon in the pro-
gram. Also included in this first presenta-
tion will be some of the history of the Main
Street area.

he Long Valley Fire Company is
hosting their 3rd Annual trip to
Dover International Raceway for the
Dover 400 on May 16, 2010. The trip will
include a charter bus to and from the event,
leaving from the Long Valley Fire House.
You will also be given hamburgers, hot
dogs and beverages for the day, as well as
ice and beverages for the race. The cost is

This presentation will be held inside the
Sanctuary of the church so that the audience
will not only hear about the history of that
church, but will be able to see many of the
things being talked about, including the
Trompe-l'oeil painting that grace the walls.
The program is open to the public, free
of charge. Refreshments will be served.
