marriage licenses

U.S. Sen. Robert Bennett (R-Utah)
has backed off pushing an amend-
ment aimed at overturning D.C.’s
same-sex marriage law — most like-
ly because his Republican colleagues
joined Senate Democrats in opposing
his plan to attach it to an aviation bill,
according to Capitol Hill insiders.
The amendment, which Bennett
filed with the Senate clerk March 11,
would have prohibited D.C. from issuing
marriage licenses to same-sex couples
until the city allows voters to decide the
issue through a referendum or initiative.
Bennett’s unsuccessful attempt to
advance the amendment came as
nearly 700 couples have applied for a
marriage license at the city’s Marriage
Bureau since the same-sex marriage
law took effect March 3. Most of those
couples have been same-sex couples.
And according to a spokesperson
for the D.C. Superior Court, which oper-
ates the Marriage Bureau, an unprece-
dented number of people applying for
marriage licenses are requesting to be
married in civil ceremonies offered free
of charge at the courthouse.
“We have probably close to 400
weddings requested,” said spokesper-
son Leah Gurowitz. “Between two-thirds
and three-quarters [of couples applying
for marriage licenses] are requesting a
wedding at the Marriage Bureau.
“So we’re getting them scheduled.
We’re calling everybody and we’re
trying to just use our space and our
time as advantageously as possible.”

Mautner Project celebrates 20th year
Health group credited
with advancing lesbian
care, visibility

The Mautner Project, the D.C.-
based national lesbian health organ-
ization, is celebrating its 20th
anniversary Saturday with 800 peo-
ple gathered for a gala fundraising
dinner and dance party at the Omni
Shoreham Hotel.
The group’s founder, Susan Hester,
and its executive director, Leslie
Calman, say the festive occasion
marks the success of an organization
that bears the name of a woman whose
forward-thinking ideas and untimely
death in 1989 became the inspiration
for its mission and programs.
“Before she died of cancer at the
age of 44, Mary-Helen Mautner asked
her partner Susan Hester to create an
organization to help other lesbians
and their loved ones meet the chal-
lenges of life-threatening illnesses,”
says the group’s web site. “Susan
promised to make Mary-Helen’s
dream a reality — and the Mautner
Project is a result of that promise.”
With Hester serving as executive
director for the first six years,
Mautner Project embarked on a mis-
sion to fulfill a vision that Hester says
her partner sketched out on a single
piece of paper while in the hospital
shortly before her death.
“She told me that during a bone
scan she realized how many les-

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has
issued an executive directive saying
that discrimination based on sexual
orientation in state employment “will
not be tolerated.”
The directive, which is different from
an executive order in that it cannot be
similarly enforced, comes after state
Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli
advised Virginia colleges and universi-
ties to strike any policies that bar dis-
crimination based on sexual orienta-
tion. It also comes after the Republican
governor failed to renew his predeces-
sor’s executive order barring discrimi-
nation based on sexual orientation in
all state employment decisions.
“Employment discrimination of any
kind will not be tolerated by this
administration,” says the directive.
“Discrimination based on factors such as
one’s sexual orientation or parental sta-
tus violates the Equal Protection Clause

Before becoming ill, Mautner was
an attorney with the U.S. Department
of Labor and a keen observer of the
LGBT rights and AIDS advocacy
movements, including programs by
AIDS groups to assign volunteer
“buddies” to assist gay men with
AIDS-related illnesses, Hester said.
“She wanted an organization that
would provide support for lesbians
who didn’t have the support she
had,” Hester said.
Calman, who began her tenure as
executive director two years ago, said
the early vision of both Mary-Helen
Mautner and Hester evolved into a
nationally acclaimed health services
and advocacy organization that, among
other things, educates health care pro-
fessionals on the needs of lesbian,
bisexual and transgender women.
The organization’s programs
include providing direct services and
support for lesbian, bisexual and trans-
gender women with cancer and other
life-threatening illnesses; and offering
support groups for cancer clients, care-
givers and others grieving over a loss.
It also educates the lesbian, bi and
trans communities about preventive
health practices and nutrition and
offers smoking cessation programs
and programs to address obesity.
“The most remarkable thing to me
about the Mautner Project is that les-
bians came together — created a
vibrant organization — and intro-
duced the rest of the country, includ-

and gay men who are not out to their

idea of working with lesbians than
there are who welcome us.”

of staff, explained the shift in a mes-
sage to state employees.
“While the separation of powers

be clear that discrimination in state
employment will not be tolerated,” he

two part-time employees and an
annual budget of about $900,000. In
keeping with its tradition of volunteer
help, the group has 60 volunteers
who help carry out its programs.
“We’re still small and scrappy,”
she said.
Hester and Calman credited for-
mer executive director Kathleen
DeBold, who headed the organiza-
tion from 2000 to 2007, with expand-
ing its budget and programs, trans-
said. “Independent agencies and
state supported colleges and univer-
sities should likewise adopt a similar
standard of conduct.”
In a statement, Human Rights
Campaign President Joe Solmonese
said McDonnell’s directive was a
step in the right direction, but noted
that it’s insufficient to fully protect gay
state employees.
“No one should be fooled by the
governor’s directive,” he said. “While
it is a positive step to acknowledge
that employment discrimination is a
challenge faced by LGBT Virginians,
public employees remain vulnerable
without an inclusive executive order
or law passed by the legislature.”
Equality Virginia CEO Jon Blair
also called the directive a “major pos-
itive step forward,” but expressed
concern that it was silent on discrim-
ination based on gender identity.
“Equality Virginia applauds his
implementation of a ‘standard of con-
duct’ that recognizes that discrimina-
tion based on sexual orientation is
unconstitutional and establishes a
strict prohibition against such dis-
crimination in the state workforce,”
Blair said in a statement.
Saying that more work needs to be

Last year, the group weighed in
on a controversy over when women
should begin undergoing mammo-
gram tests for breast cancer. The
controversy was triggered by a U.S.
government medical task force,
which issued recommendations sug-
gesting that mammograms may not
be beneficial for women between the
ages of 40 and 50.
Among other things, the task force
pointed to data showing there was a
statistically insignificant difference in
the lives saved of women who under-
went mammograms in their 40s and
those who did not. The task force con-
cluded that the very small difference
in the number of breast cancer cases
detected in women taking the test in
their 40s did not justify the expense,
subsequent biopsies and “anxieties”
the tests generated.
In an open letter to the community,
Calman and D.C. physician Linda
Spooner, chair of the Mautner
Project’s board of directors, sided with
the American Cancer Society, which
urged women between 40 and 50 to
ignore the task force recommendation
and take yearly mammograms.
“Mammography is a diagnostic
tool, not a cure, and we need a cure,”
Spooner and Calman said in their let-
ter. “But for the task of early and time-
ly detection, mammograms, in con-
junction with clinical breast exams,
are our best tool.”
They added that the task force’s sug-
gestion that avoiding mammograms
would spare women anxiety “strikes
us as patronizing and dangerous.”

David Lampo, vice president of
the Log Cabin Republican Club of
Virginia, also praised the governor’s
intervention and called for the direc-
tive to be codified in law.
“This is certainly a step in the right
direction and certainly puts some
meat on the bones of his stated policy
of employment non-discrimination,”
Lampo said. “[Codifying this directive]
is the only fair and just outcome to this
controversy, and it would end once
and for all the attorney general’s dis-
graceful attempts to intimidate state
colleges and universities into dropping
their entirely justified employment non-
discrimination policies.”

Sexual assault may be dropped
in Robert Wone murder case
But expert says it
‘doesn’t look good’
for 3 gay defendants

The lead prosecutor in the Robert
Wone murder case startled court-
room spectators last week when he
said the government would likely
drop its theory that Wone was immo-
bilized by a paralytic drug and sexu-
ally assaulted before being stabbed
to death in the Dupont Circle home
of three gay men.

Superior Court hearing March 12
drew visible sighs of relief from
defendants Joseph Price, Victor
Zaborsky and Dylan Ward. Price
gave a thumbs-up signal to his attor-
ney, Bernard Grimm.
“This appears to be a major victo-
ry for the defense,” said D.C. attor-
ney Dale Sanders, who practices
criminal law in the District.
Sanders said that by withdrawing its
earlier contention that Wone was sex-
ually assaulted and drugged, prosecu-
tors would make it easier for the
defense to promote their own con-
tention that an unidentified intruder
killed Wone after entering the home of
the three gay men through a rear door.
The men have been indicted on
charges of obstruction of justice,
conspiracy to obstruct justice and
evidence tampering in connection
with the August 2006 murder.
Authorities have yet to charge any-
one with the murder itself. The trial is
scheduled to begin May 10.
Kirschner told D.C. Superior Court
Judge Lynn Leibovitz that prosecutors
were still considering introducing other
evidence at trial considered highly
controversial: a collection of S&M sex
toys seized by police from Ward’s
bedroom, which prosecutors have
said was located across the hall from
where Wone was found stabbed in a
second-floor guest bedroom.
Wone, a prominent Washington
attorney, was friends with the three
men and spending the night at their
home after working late in his down-
town office, the men and members of
Wone’s family have said. Wone was
married to a woman, and his family
members said he was straight.
Leibovitz said she had yet to see
sufficient evidence presented by pros-
ecutors to justify the introduction of the
“devices” at trial. She noted that
defense attorneys presented argu-
ments as to why such evidence was
not relevant to the case and how it
would be prejudicial to the jury.
She directed prosecutors to file a
motion before April 2 explaining their
rationale for introducing such evi-
dence and said she would rule on its
admissibility at that time.

surrounding their evidence and the-
ories in the case, saying the govern-
ment has complied with all “discov-
ery” requirements for informing the
defense of its evidence.
Last week’s hearing followed a court
motion filed by prosecutors in February
seeking permission to introduce evi-
dence at trial that Price, Zaborsky and
Ward engaged in possible criminal con-
duct not identified in the charges pend-
ing against them. Some of the alleged
conduct cited in the court filing per-
tained to the use of S&M-related
restraining devices as well as devices
used to administer electrical shocks to
a person’s genitals.
“Are you planning to tell the jury that
he was sexually assaulted, restrained,”
that sex toys were used on him and he
was injected with something? Leibovitz
asked Kirschner.
“We’re moving away from the sexu-
al assault proof,” Kirschner replied. But
he said prosecutors still planned to
offer some evidence that “restraints”
were found in Ward’s bedroom.
In response to another assertion
made by prosecutors in their February
court filing — that “the killer is someone
known to and being protected” by
Price, Zaborsky and Ward — Leibovitz
asked Kirschner, ” Do you plan to say
one or all of these men killed Wone?”
“Not directly,” Kirschner replied.
He said prosecutors also plan to
present evidence from the autopsy
of needle marks on Wone’s body,
including marks he noted the govern-
ment’s medical experts would show
were not made by emergency med-
ical technicians who arrived at the
scene and tried to revive Wone.
Kirschner disclosed at the hearing
that he had submitted a letter to the
defense earlier in the day, which he
also filed with the court, saying that the
government obtained new information
from medical experts that appeared to
raise doubts over whether Wone had
been sexually assaulted or immobi-
lized by a paralytic drug.
Authorities first raised that theory in
a lengthy criminal complaint filed at the
time police brought criminal charges
against the three men for obstruction of
justice and evidence tampering.
The complaint cited an autopsy
finding showing that Wone suffered
three surgical-like, “clean” stab
wounds in the chest and abdomen
that could only have occurred if he
were lying completely still. The com-
plaint, and subsequent arguments by
prosecutors, claimed that a person
being stabbed would be expected to
recoil in pain or move in a defensive
way, causing the wounds to be
jagged or distorted.
Prosecutors said a paralytic drug
must have been administered to
Wone to render him immobile, but
they acknowledged that the autopsy
and subsequent chemical tests
could not find traces of such a drug in
Wone’s body. They argued that the
type of anesthesia-like drug in ques-
tion usually dissipates quickly and
cannot be detected in tests.
But defense attorneys say in their
own court filings that they would
present expert witnesses to show
that such drugs are detectable in
tests, and the government’s inability
to detect such a drug shows it was
never administered.
According to prosecutors, the
sexual assault theory was based on
another finding in the autopsy that
traces of Wone’s semen were found
inside his rectum. The defense later
argued that its own experts would
show that the semen had no sperm
cells, indicating it was secreted nat-
urally by the body after Wone died,
as muscles relax during the post
mortem processes.
Sanders said that although the
apparent decision by prosecutors to
put aside their earlier sexual assault
and paralytic drug theory is a blow to
the prosecutors’ case, other evi-
dence obtained against the three
men remains significant and strong.
He noted, among other things,
that investigators found traces of
blood in the lint trap of the men’s
clothes dryer and in a drain outside
the house; findings by evidence tech-
nicians that someone cleaned the
crime scene by attempting to wipe
blood spattered near the body;
and that the bloody kitchen knife that
the men said they found near Wone’s
body bore fibers from a towel, indicat-
ing to evidence experts that Wone’s
blood was wiped onto knife blade by
someone, with another knife likely
used to kill Wone.
Authorities also have said Wone
appeared to have been dead a signifi-
cant period of time before Zaborsky
called 911 to report a stabbing; and res-
cue workers reported finding very little
blood on Wone’s chest and body, indi-
cating that someone cleaned the body
before police and rescue workers were
called, according to the police affidavit.
“They won this battle, but the war
doesn’t look good for them,” Sanders
said. “You can’t lose track of the big
picture, which doesn’t look good for
these guys.”

‘Real World’ house
One of the nation’s largest HIV non-profit organizations is taking over
the Dupont Circle home used for filming MTV’s “Real World D.C.”
HealthHIV is leasing the property at 2000 S St., N.W. and will use it to house
its 20-person staff, which works to advance effective prevention, care and sup-
port for people living with HIV/AIDS or who are at risk of contracting the disease.
“It is a highly recognizable location that allows us to raise public
awareness of HIV in Washington and nationwide,” Brian Hujdich,
HealthHIV’s executive director, said in a statement.
“As a non-profit, our move made sense since we have a favorable
lease which allows us to repurpose materials from the ‘Real World D.C.’
and use the space as not only an office, but as a community center and
a modest studio for taping web-based trainings.”
An estimated 1.1 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV, according to
the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. That number includes 15,120
people in D.C. — a total that represents 3 percent of the city’s population.

Arrest made in trans bias assaults
The D.C. police department’s Gay & Lesbian and Latino liaison units
joined forces last week to assist in the arrest of a male suspect who
reportedly used a metal pipe to assault two Latino transgender people,
according to Sgt. Carlos Mejia, who heads both units.
“The investigation further revealed that the suspect attacked the com-
plainants because of their gender identity,” Mejia said in a statement. “One of
the [victims] sustained injuries from the attack and received medical treatment.”
He said the suspect, who was not identified in the statement, was
arrested on the scene and charged with bias-related assault with a dan-
gerous weapon, an offense considered a hate crime under city law. The
alleged incident occurred March 13 near 14th and Shepherd streets, N.W.
Mejia did not disclose in his statement whether the transgender vic-
tims were male or female.

Equality Md. names field organizer
Equality Maryland announced March 15 the appointment of Owen
Smith as its new field organizer for transgender equality issues.
A resident of Baltimore, Smith comes to Equality Maryland with experi-
ence in both teaching and advocating on behalf of the transgender commu-
nity. He will work with the Equality Maryland staff to develop programming
and policy efforts to meet the needs of Maryland’s transgender community.
“Owen has been involved in transgender activism and gender justice work in
Maryland for many years,” said Morgan Meneses-Sheets, Equality Maryland’s
executive director. “We are confident that Owen will be a valuable asset in our
work to ensure that all Marylanders are treated equally under the law.”
Among the tasks Smith is slated to help with are coordinating grass-
roots efforts in Annapolis, developing a speaker’s bureau and continuing
coalition work within the areas of homelessness and poverty work.
“I am passionate about celebrating and sustaining gender justice and
equality,” Smith said. “I am also interested in examining the intersection
of gender, race and sexual orientation to make connections within all
social justice communities.”
Smith comes to Equality Maryland with advocacy experience. He has
testified in the Maryland House of Delegates and Maryland Senate regard-
ing discrimination based on gender identity, and was part of efforts that halt-
ed a planned change regarding gender markers on state driver’s licenses.

The number of diagnoses of full-blown
AIDS cases in the District of Columbia
declined by 33 percent from 2004 to 2008, and
the number of city residents dying from AIDS
dropped by 30 percent during the same period,
according to the city’s 2009 report on
HIV/AIDS and other diseases.
But the report also says that the total num-
ber of people living with HIV/AIDS in the city
increased by 9.2 percent between December
2007 and December 2008, the most recent
period for which data is available.
And similar to past findings, the report
shows that men who have sex with men,
referred to as MSM, account for the leading
mode of transmission of HIV, accounting for
37.3 percent of people living with HIV/AIDS.

D.C. City Council member David Catania,
who chairs the Council’s Committee on Health,
echoed Fenty’s assessment of the report.
“There is a lot of good news in this report,”
he said. “But we continue to labor under the
highest rates of HIV in the country.”
Catania and Fenty noted that the good
news, among other things, is the city doubled
the number of people enrolled in its free
HIV/AIDS anti-retroviral drug program, leading
to a significant drop in the number of AIDS
deaths.
The report’s findings on the breakdown of
HIV diagnoses by race and gender show
trends similar to those found in the reports for
the previous two years:
• among the city’s overall population, 4.6
percent of blacks, 2.1 percent of Latinos, and
1.5 percent of whites are living with HIV/AIDS;
• among the city’s black males, 7.1 percent
have HIV/AIDS;
• among people living with HIV/AIDS, 72 per-
cent are men, 75.6 percent are black men, and
71.3 percent are currently over the age of 40;
• men who have sex with men account for
37.3 percent of all living HIV/AIDS cases;
• heterosexual transmission makes up 27
percent of the living cases;
• injection drug use accounts for the mode of
transmission in 17.4 percent of the living cases;
• the leading mode of transmission for new
HIV/AIDS cases in D.C. is heterosexual con-
tact (30.6 percent), men who have sex with
men (29.1 percent), and injection drug users
(21.4 percent).

ence, in addition to Fenty, Catania, and Hader,
were Dr. Pierre Vigilance, director of the D.C.
Department of Health, and Don Blanchon,
executive director of the Whitman-Walker
Clinic, which hosted the news conference out-

LGBT contingent to join weekend immigration rally
Activists seek to include
same-sex bi-national
couples in reform

Proponents of comprehensive
immigration reform legislation are
planning to rally this weekend in sup-
port of the bill — and drum up sup-
port for a proposed component that
would help same-sex couples.
Tens of thousands of demonstrators
— perhaps even up to 100,000 — are
expected to gather Sunday at 2 p.m. on
the National Mall to call for passing
immigration reform this year. Reform
Immigration for America, a coalition of
immigration reform organizations, is
staging the event.
Within this larger protest, a contin-
gent of about 200 protesters is set to
advocate for LGBT inclusion in immigra-
tion reform, and in particular, a provision
to help same-sex bi-national couples.
Because same-sex couples don’t
have federal marriage rights that are
available to straight couples, LGBT
people in same-sex relationships with
a foreign national cannot marry their
partner to allow them to stay in the U.S.
Under current immigration law, an
estimated 36,000 same-sex bi-nation-
al couples are kept apart or are in dan-

American Families Act would allow
LGBT people to sponsor their partners
for permanent residency.
Advocates of UAFA are trying to
include the legislation as a provision
in comprehensive reform — and are
taking part in the rally to ensure their
presence is visible within the larger
immigration movement.
Steve Ralls, spokesperson for
Immigration Equality, a group advocating
for UAFA, said the rally will be “a visible
reminder” to Congress and the Obama
administration on keeping their pledge to
tackle immigration reform in 2010.
“In fact, I would say that it has
already been effective,” Ralls said.
“The president last week called key
senators to the White House and
began holding meetings about how to
address this issue, and I have no
doubt that the march on the Mall
helped to spur those meetings along.”
Among those participating in the rally
is Laurie Larson, a 56-year-old Arlington,
Va., resident, who’s marching on behalf

of two friends who were torn apart.
Joe and Steve, former D.C. resi-
dents, lived in the District for 10
years together until Joe was laid off
from his position as a structural engi-
neer in 2009. Joe and Steve asked to
be identified only by their first names.
Because of the nature of his visa,
Joe was able to stay in the United
States for only six months after he
lost his job. The couple is now sepa-
rated, but planning a move to
Canada so they can stay together.
Larson, who’s straight, said she’s
taking part in the rally — after having
participated in a LGBT rally for immigra-
tion reform in October — because she
thinks the situation is “totally ludicrous.”
“It’s incumbent upon us to keep
the issue in front of people,” she said.
“We’ll continue to keep the issue in
front of Congress and our represen-
tatives and the public at large. To me,
it’s really one of the last civil rights
issues of the 21st century.”
Also participating in the rally is
Emmanuel Garcia, the Chicago-
based host of “Homofrecuencia,” the
only Spanish language LGBT radio
show in the United States. He’s bring-
ing about 100 LGBT people on a bus
to participate in the D.C. protest.
For Garcia, who’s gay, participating in
the march is not just about drawing
attention to UAFA, but showing that
LGBT immigrants are among those who
are part of the immigration movement.
“We’re focused on a more complex
conversation on immigration reform,”
he said. “We also understand that
there are a lot of LGBTs who would
benefit from immigration reform under
this bill without the Uniting American
Families Act included.”
Garcia said passage of immigration
reform would allow LGBT immigrants —
even without the passage of UAFA — to
remain in the U.S. if they don’t have a
partner to sponsor them for residency.
“We have people who have come
out as gay, lesbian and bisexual who
are also coming out as undocument-
ed,” he said. “Some of those stories
relate to both experiences — what
it’s like to come out as LGBT, what
it’s like to come out in a society that
doesn’t accept that doesn’t want to
give a certain group rights because
they don’t feel they deserve them.”
Optimism for reform
As advocates come to rally on the
National Mall, Sens. Chuck Schumer
(D-N.Y.) and Lindsey Graham (R-
S.C.) are developing comprehensive
immigration reform legislation in the
U.S. Senate. Earlier this month, both
senators met with Obama at the
White House to discuss moving for-
ward with the legislation.

‘Don’t Ask’ could get
‘more humane’ guidelines

Service members threatened with dis-
charge under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” may soon
be able to breathe easier after Pentagon
lawyers complete their assessment on finding
a “more humane” way to implement the law.
The assessment, due for completion this
week, is taking place because Defense
Secretary Robert Gates tasked the Pentagon’s
Office of the General Counsel with reviewing
the regulations for “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” to see
if the Department of Defense could implement
the law in a fairer manner.
After asking last year for a preliminary
assessment for what he called a potentially
“more humane” policy, Gates announced
before the Senate Armed Services Committee
on Feb. 2 the review would be complete in 45
days. Earlier this month, Jeh Johnson, the
Pentagon’s top lawyer, said during congres-
sional testimony the assessment would be fin-
ished on or around March 19.
But what these final changes will entail is
unknown because information about them isn’t
public. The Defense Department didn’t
respond to DC Agenda’s request to comment
on the new regulations.
Also unknown is the timing for when the
Pentagon will unveil these changes, as well as
how long it would take for Gates to implement
them once he receives the recommendations.
Repeal advocates say they’re unsure what
Pentagon lawyers will ultimately produce, but
have issued recommendations for changing
the application of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” under
the current statute.
Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of the
Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, said
his organization provided the Defense
Department in July with a list of possible
changes that could be made.
Among the changes are mandating evi-
dence when a possible violation of “Don’t Ask,
Don’t Tell” comes from a fellow service mem-
ber and not a civilian; eliminating anonymous
tips as the basis for the start of an inquiry; and
requiring that alleged homosexual conduct on
which any discharge is based occurs after a
service member joined the armed forces.
“And actually, Secretary Gates and Adm.
Mullen referred to all six of those at the Feb. 2
hearing, but we don’t have any concrete intelli-
gence as to what Mr. Johnson may or may not
be recommending to the secretary,” Sarvis said.
During that testimony, Gates raised some
possibilities as to what the changes could
entail. He said the Pentagon could raise the
level of the officer who initiates or conducts
inquiries, as well as what constitutes a credible
source to start an investigation.
Gates also told lawmakers the Defense
Department can “reduce the instances” in
which a service member is outed by a third
party under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
Alex Nicholson, executive director of
Servicemembers United, said the actual benefit
to gay soldiers of eliminating third-party outings
is unknown because reliable information on why
service members are expelled isn’t available.
“Anybody can sort of venture to guess based
on their experience and anecdotal evidence,” he
said. “But it’s really hard to do that with authority
or credibility because we don’t have any statis-
tics on how many discharges are the result of
self-initiated outings, how many are the result of
third-party outings and how many are the result

of behavior being discovered.”
Aaron Belkin, director of the Palm Center, a
think-tank on gays in the military at the University
of California, Santa Barbara, said if such changes
are enacted, it would eliminate important prob-
lems, but still wouldn’t address other issues.
“One is you’re not going to be able to eliminate
all discharges,” he said. “Two, as long as the law
is on the books, you’ll still have the sword hang-
ing over gay people’s heads, and it’s that sword
that makes it difficult for them to do their job.”
Belkin said new regulations also won’t
change how “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” damages
the military “symbolically and reputationally”
simply by being on the books.
During the Feb. 2 hearing, Gates said as
part of these changes the Pentagon would
“devise new rules and procedures” in light of
the 2008 Ninth Court of Appeals ruling in Witt
v. Air Force, which challenged the constitution-
ality of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
The decision, which was construed to only
apply to the plaintiff, determined the Pentagon
needed to prove lesbian Maj. Margaret Witt’s
sexual orientation was a detriment to unit cohe-
sion in order to discharge her from the Air Force.
Applying the heightened Witt standard on a
national basis was one of SLDN’s recommen-
dations for a change under current law. Sarvis
said such an application would help the
Defense Department “create uniformity” in all
“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” discharge cases.
But Belkin said he doesn’t think the Pentagon
would apply the Witt standard on a national basis
because it would be too big of a change.
“I would doubt that the Defense Department
would take a judicial ruling that applies to one
circuit and use regulation to expand its scope
to the whole military,” he said. “I think that’s too
big of a step for a regulatory tweak.”
Whatever changes the Pentagon makes,
advocates maintain legislative repeal of “Don’t
Ask, Don’t Tell” is the only way to properly
address the law.
If the Pentagon implements the changes
SLDN recommended, Sarvis said it would “go
a long ways,” but “wouldn’t diminish the need
for Congress to repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’”
Sarvis said legislative repeal is particularly
needed so any conservative administration fol-
lowing President Obama couldn’t reverse the
changes made under the existing statute.
“The next secretary and a new administra-
tion could come along and make revisions that
he or she may feel they have authority for
under the current statute,” he said. “That’s why
I go back to changes to the regulations are not
a substitute for repealing the statute.”

Could Pentagon’s ‘Don’t Ask’ review hinder repeal?

As the top U.S. commander oversee-
ing operations in Iraq and Afghanistan
expressed support Tuesday for recon-
sidering “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” he
noted the Pentagon study currently
underway could offer a positive or neg-
ative take on open service.
Following his initial remarks on
“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” Gen. David
Petraeus, commander of U.S. Central
Command, made the remarks to the
Senate Armed Services Committee
on the possible outcome of the study.
Chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich.)
asked Petraeus to confirm he said
earlier in Levin’s office that the study
could show repeal’s “likely effects
could go in either direction.”
“I believe you told me — either
negative or positive, the study could
show,” Levin said.
Petraeus affirmed that he made
those remarks, saying, “It could. It
could. Yes, sir.”
Asked by DC Agenda to clarify
this view of the study, Levin replied,
“Yeah, in terms like the impact on
recruitment, readiness — it could

have a positive or negative — and
that’s what he confirmed here.”
Petraeus didn’t talk to reporters
after the hearing.
If the parameters of the study are
to determine whether repeal would
have a positive or negative impact —
as opposed to examining the best way
to implement repeal — it would be
inconsistent with how Defense
Secretary Robert Gates outlined the
review in congressional testimony last
month. At the time, Gates said the
study would focus on implementing
repeal and not whether it would be
beneficial or harmful to the military.
“The question before us is not
whether the military prepares to make

this change, but how we best prepare
for it,” he said. “We received our orders
from the commander-in-chief and we
are moving out accordingly.”
The nature of the study as described
by Petraeus and Levin also raises ques-
tions about why President Obama, who
campaigned on repeal of “Don’t Ask,
Don’t Tell,” would authorize a review that
could complicate repeal efforts.
But Kevin Nix, spokesperson for
the Servicemembers Legal Defense
Network, said he’s “confident” the
working group will follow the directive
outlined by Gates “to figure out how
best to implement open service.”
“The Senate repeal bill gives the
military plenty of additional time —
well into 2011 — to look at how to
transition while Congress moves to
end the law in 2010,” Nix said.
Nathaniel Frank, author of
“Unfriendly Fire” and research fellow
for the Palm Center, a think-tank on
gays in the military at the University
of California, Santa Barbara, said the
problem with the working group is
that it could succumb to what he
called “political expediency.”
Frank said “mounds of research”
have already answered questions
about the impact on open service in
the military. If the group does its job
well, Frank noted, the findings will be
consistent with this research and dis-
cover “there will be no negative impact
or that any impact will be negligible
and manageable.”
“But if the group falls prey to polit-
ical pressure to exaggerate the risks
to readiness, that will be used by
obstructionists to derail reform in
Congress, and ultimately full repeal
is up to Congress,” Frank said.
Although the study was outlined as a
way to implement repeal, Frank said
what Gates actually put in place was a
“political process,” and Obama’s willing-
ness to set it up “does raise concerns
about a repeat of the failures of 1993.”
Whatever the focus of the study,
Petraeus backed the review Tuesday
during the hearing as the best way to
approach “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” while
saying the time has come to “consid-
er a change.”
“I believe the time has come to con-
sider a change to ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’
but I think it should be done in a thought-
ful and deliberative manner,” he said.
“And that should include the conduct of
the review that Secretary Gates had
directed that would consider the views
of the force by changing the policy.”
Petraeus initially asked for eight
minutes to give a statement on “Don’t
Ask, Don’t Tell” in response to a
question from Sen. John McCain (R-
Ariz.), but Levin denied him that
opportunity, saying giving the gener-
al eight minutes would violate the
rules by going over the time McCain
was allotted for questioning.
Levin said another senator could
devote their entire question-and-
answer time for Petraeus so he could
offer his longer statement, although
no committee panel volunteered their
time. At the end of the hearing, Levin
said he would welcome the longer
statement from Petraeus if he want-
ed to submit it as part of the record.
In response to Petraeus’ remarks,
Nix said SLDN is awaiting the gener-
al’s eight-minute answer before
weighing in on Petraeus’ position.
“We agree that open service is
more than a sound byte,” Nix said.
“The bottom line is our service mem-
bers are professionals and they know
how to bring about the change to
open service.”

New bill would bar housing bias against gay, trans people
Measure seeks to amend
Fair Housing Act of 1968

U.S. Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.)
has introduced a bill that would
amend the landmark Fair Housing
Act of 1968 to include a ban on hous-
ing discrimination based on sexual
orientation and gender identity.
Nadler introduced the measure,
the Fair & Inclusive Housing Rights
Act of 2010, March 11 shortly before
he held a hearing to discuss possible
changes for the Fair Housing Act.
“Housing discrimination remains a
persistent problem in our country,” he
said in opening remarks at the hear-
ing before the House Judiciary
Subcommittee on the Constitution,
Civil Rights & Civil Liberties, which he
chairs. “While we would like to think
that housing discrimination is an arti-
fact of the past, we know it is not.”
Nadler and several witnesses
who testified at the hearing, includ-
ing Rea Carey, executive director of
the National Gay & Lesbian Task
Force, praised the Fair Housing Act
for making important progress in
fighting housing-related discrimina-
tion against other minorities.

put together a package of amend-
ments that could be considered and
they agreed that his would not be
part of it,” Penchina said. “And some-
one in his party leadership called and
said, ‘Why don’t you save this for
another day?’ That’s me speculating,
but that’s probably what happened.”

Senate’s majority whip, said Senate
Republicans clearly supported a
consent agreement that did not
include the Bennett amendment.
“So I’m not sure why it wasn’t
offered,” Gleischman said. “But it was
not. And so therefore we’ve locked in,
through a consent agreement, a
finite list of amendments. And that’s
not one of the ones on the list.”
Bennett’s proposed amendment,
which was published in the March 11
Congressional Record, is identical to
a freestanding bill that he and seven
other Republicans introduced Feb. 2.
The bill’s stated purpose is “to pro-
tect the democratic process and the
right of the people of the District of
Columbia to define marriage.”

Kan.) and Roger Wicker (R-Miss.)

ment as a proposed attachment to

license to any couple of the same
sex until the people of the District of
Columbia have the opportunity to
hold a referendum or initiative on the
question of whether the District of
Columbia should issue same-sex
marriage licenses.”
Paul Strauss, who lobbies the
U.S. Senate as an informal shadow
senator on D.C.-related issues, said
unconfirmed reports that Bennett
was planning to introduce an amend-
ment to block the city’s same-sex
marriage law surfaced last week on
Capitol Hill.
“It could potentially force an up or
down vote on gay marriage,” Strauss
said. “This is certainly something that
Democrats and at least some
Republicans want to avoid.”
D.C. gay activist Bob Summersgill,
who has coordinated local efforts to
persuade the city government to sup-
port same-sex marriage equality, said
Bennett and other lawmakers
opposed to the marriage law are like-

turn it later this year.

Summersgill noted that while

a D.C. gay marriage amendment to

“It will be germane on that bill,” he
said.
But as Bennett backed down on
his marriage amendment, the
National Organization for Marriage,
which campaigns against same-sex
marriage laws throughout the coun-
try, appeared to inject the gay mar-
riage issue into the city’s upcoming
mayoral election campaign.
Several local activists reported
being contacted by an automated
telephone poll on the D.C. gay mar-
riage law that identified NOM as its
sponsor. The activists said a record-
ed message stated that Mayor
Adrian Fenty supports “gay mar-
riage” and at least one of his lesser-
known opponents in the 2010 may-

The three-page bill is focused sole-
ly on expanding the Fair Housing Act
to include protections based on sexual
orientation and gender identity.
“We’re very pleased that he intro-
duced this today and, with our testi-
mony and the support of others, we
hope it gains momentum,” Carey said
after the hearing. “There are a num-
ber of members of Congress who will
be quite supportive of this.”
In her testimony, Carey cited pre-
liminary findings of a Task Force sur-
vey on transgender discrimination
showing that 11 percent of transgen-
der respondents reported being
evicted and 19 percent reported
becoming homeless due to incidents
of discrimination.
“For us, the pursuit of the American
dream, including home ownership, is a
risky proposition,” she said. “When our
sexual orientation or gender identity is
known, either because we offer it will-

same-sex marriage opponents have
vowed to work to defeat Fenty, who
signed the same-sex marriage bill,
and 11 of the 13-member City
Council who voted for the bill when it
passed in December.
But political observers say no
serious candidates opposing gay
marriage have surfaced so far to run
against Fenty. And just a few people,
whose chances are viewed as ques-
tionable, have emerged to run
against Council members who voted
for the marriage measure.
Alexander, who announced his
candidacy in September, has raised
less than $4,000 for his mayoral
campaign, according to records filed
with the D.C. Office of Campaign
Finance. Records from the office
also show that Fenty has raised
more than $3 million for his re-elec-
tion campaign.
D.C. Council Chair Vincent Gray
(D-At Large), who has said he is con-
sidering running for mayor and is
considered a viable candidate, voted
for the marriage bill and, like Fenty,
has been an outspoken supporter of
same-sex marriage equality.

Employment Non-Discrimination Act,
which would bar employment dis-
crimination on the basis of sexual ori-
entation and gender identity.
Insiders, including LGBT activists,
say ENDA has a good chance of
clearing the House but its prospects
in the Senate are less certain.
Other people who testified at the
hearing said they supported adding
sexual orientation and gender identity
protections to the Fair Housing Act,
and also called for better enforcement
of the act’s existing protections.
The other witnesses included
Shanna Smith, president of the
National Fair Housing Alliance;
Barbara Arnwine, executive director of
the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights
Under Law; Kenneth Marcus, visiting
professor of Baruch College School of
Public Affairs; John Relman, founder
and director of Relman & Dane; and
Okianer Christian Dark, an associate
dean and professor of law at the
Howard University School of Law.
Donahue Peebles, has vowed to
spend $5 million of his own money
should he enter the mayoral race,
making him a potentially serious con-
tender. A Peebles spokesperson did
not immediately return a DC Agenda
call seeking to learn Peebles’ posi-
tion on same-sex marriage.
Some reports have surfaced that
he supports same-sex marriage but
also favors a referendum or initiative to
allow voters to decide the issue, but
the reports could not be confirmed.
As developments surrounding the
D.C. marriage law continue to unfold,
many activists have said the joy
experienced by the dozens of same-
sex couples who have married or
obtained marriage licenses so far
has overshadowed the controversial
aspects of the law.

of Washington, which has a mostly
gay congregation, said the church’s
first same-sex wedding held March
14 had a profound impact on the
more than 250 people in attendance.

Chrisler said a half million children are living
in foster care throughout the U.S. and 120,000
of them are available for adoption. But each
year, she noted, around 25,000 children “age
out” of the system without finding parents.
“And yet, while there is a shortage of quali-
fied foster and adoptive parents for these chil-
dren in need, some states categorically
exclude thousands of prospective parents sim-
ply because of their sexual orientation, gender
identity or marital status,” she said.
Florida is the only state that has a statute
explicitly prohibiting adoption by gays and les-
bians. Other states, including Utah and
Arkansas, have laws prohibiting unmarried
couples from adopting or fostering children.
But Chrisler said the majority of states have
no laws to speak to whether LGBT people can
adopt, which can leave children in foster care
“vulnerable to the individual biases of agen-
cies, case workers and judges.”
As the Every Child Deserves a Family Act
builds support, litigation to address the situations
in certain states is proceeding. Leslie Cooper, an
ACLU senior staff attorney, said in addition to the
Florida case, another ACLU lawsuit is pending in
Arkansas to overturn the law preventing unmar-
ried cohabitating couples from adopting.
But Cooper said lawsuits aren’t “the way to
fully resolve this issue,” noting the cost of cases
and the difficulty of litigation in states without
specific statutes barring LGBT adoption.
“Litigation can be extremely effective and
chip away at this problem, and hopefully in
some states, resolve the issue,” she said. “But
they aren’t the answer and can’t solve this
problem in any stretch. A more global solution
like this bill is what we need.”
Two panelists during the discussion pre-
sented research showing that the sexual orien-
tation of parents has no impact on their chil-
dren and many LGBT people would consider
adoption if it were available to them.
Charlotte Patterson, a lesbian psychology
professor at the University of Virginia who spe-
cializes in LGBT families, said 36 percent of les-
bians are mothers, 16 percent of gay men are
fathers and 40 to 50 percent of gays and lesbians
say they would consider becoming parents.
“Children really do well in lesbian and gay
parented homes as compared to demographi-
cally similar homes parented by heterosexual
adults,” she said.
Patterson said growing up in LGBT house-
holds has no influence on children’s relation-
ships with their parents, siblings and peers, nor
does it affect their gender development, such
as whether they want to play with traditionally
male or female toys.
“The consensus here is extraordinarily clear,”
she said. “Kids are well adjusted. There’s really
no need to justify any kind of discrimination.”
Following the discussion, Patterson told DC
Agenda studies often touted by social conser-
vatives claiming that biological parents are bet-
ter than same-sex couples at raising children
are misleading.
“In general, what they’re referring to is
research about kids growing up with single het-
erosexual parents and kids growing up with
heterosexual couples,” she said. “In those stud-
ies, there are usually no openly gay or lesbian
people, but the results of the studies are often
used to make inferences about what kids in
gay and lesbian parented families would do.
That’s a mistake, of course.”

A common misconception, Gates said, is
that it’s mostly LGBT people who are white that
want to raise children, as opposed to LGBT
people who belong to racial minority groups.
“All the data that we know about parenting
by LGBT people and same-sex couples shows
that, in fact, child-rearing is much more com-
mon in people of color,” he said. “So particular-
ly African Americans and Latinos and Latinas,
they’re twice as likely as their white counter-
parts to say that they’ve raised a child.”
Regarding the full population, Gates said
about one million LGBT people in the United
States are raising around two million children.
The numbers are different when looking just
at same-sex couples. Based on U.S. Census
data, Gates said about 112,000 same-sex cou-
ples throughout the United States are raising
around 250,000 children.
But Gates also said the data show more same-
sex couples raise children in states other than
where LGBT people tend to live — often West or
East Coast states with more gay-friendly laws.
“What that also tells you is that same-sex cou-
ples are raising kids in states that have some of
the most restrictive and challenging legal environ-
ments for gay and lesbian people raising children,”
Gates said. “Many of the states with relatively high
fractions of same-sex couples raising kids are
very both politically and socially conservative.”
Also speaking at the panel was Nakea
Paige, an 18-year-old high school student in
D.C. who grew up in the foster care system.
Although she’s bound this fall for Michigan
State University to study biochemical engi-
neering, Paige said her childhood was difficult
because she never found a permanent home.
“I’ve been in one group home and three fos-
ter homes within three years, and having lived
in three different places in three years has
been a very scary experience,” she said.
Paige said one foster mother wouldn’t allow
her to stay because she wasn’t receiving the full
amount of compensation she thought she would
receive. The foster mother had given a 30-day
notice to leave, but Paige said she didn’t know
about the notice until it was time for her to go.
Following the panel discussion, Paige told
DC Agenda she wouldn’t have minded living
with LGBT parents.
“It wouldn’t have bothered me, basically
because it’s a family,” she said. “As long as I
have somebody there to love me as a child,
and them as a parent, then I’m fine with it.”

Graham’s office responded to DC
Agenda’s requests to comment on
the inclusion of UAFA in their bill.
Still, Ralls said he’s “optimistic”
that the comprehensive legislation
will include a provision for bi-national
same-sex couples.
Ralls said Schumer noted during
congressional testimony last year
that he thought it was appropriate for
immigration reform to include a
UAFA-like provision. Ralls also noted
that Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), chair
of the Senate Judiciary Committee,
is the sponsor for the standalone ver-
sion of UAFA in the Senate.
“Our hope and expectation is that
with two champions as strong and influ-
ential as that, that we have a very good
shot of being included,” Ralls said.
It’s also unclear when Schumer
and Graham will make their bill pub-
lic — and when they do, if enough
time remains in the legislative calen-
dar to pass immigration reform this
year. With limited time remaining
before lawmakers break to campaign
for mid-term elections, other major
issues such as financial reform and
climate change legislation could take
precedence over immigration.
Ralls said he hopes the senators
will introduce their legislation some-
time this spring and noted that
Schumer has “remained steadfast in
his desire to introduce the legislation
just as soon as we can.”
Asked whether enough time
remains this year for Congress to take
on immigration reform, Ralls replied,
“The short answer is I hope so.”
“I know that Sen. Schumer is work-
ing very hard to build the coalitions in
the Senate and to bring people togeth-
er to make that happen,” he said.
Despite advocates’ push for includ-
ing a provision for UAFA as part of
comprehensive immigration reform, a
number of uncertainties and obstacles
are in the way. One issue is whether
Graham, who has a conservative vot-
ing record, would be open to including
UAFA. The Human Rights Campaign
gave him a score of 0 out of 100 on its
most recent congressional scorecard.
But Ralls said he hopes Republicans
such as Graham would allow for the
inclusion of UAFA in the comprehensive
reform because such a provision would
strengthen families in the U.S.
“Republican lawmakers are going
to take a strong stand in favor of fam-
ily unification as a priority in the com-
prehensive bill,” Ralls said. “Lesbian
and gay families are a natural fit for
family unification issues.”
Ralls added that if Schumer and
Graham can work together to create a
bill that boasts bipartisan support for
other issues — such as creating a path
to citizenship for immigrants — UAFA
“will not be a make-or-break situation.”
Another uncertainly is the degree
to which the White House would sup-
port passing UAFA as part of com-
prehensive reform, particularly if
administration officials believe
including the provision would compli-
cate passage of the larger bill.
The White House has expressed
support for both UAFA and compre-
hensive immigration reform as individ-
ual items, but hasn’t endorsed passing
them together as one larger package.
In response to a query on
whether Obama would support pass-
ing UAFA this year as part of immi-
gration reform, Shin Inouye, a White
House spokesperson, said in a state-
ment the president’s “commitment to
fixing our broken immigration system
remains unwavering, and he contin-
ues to hope for bipartisan leadership
on legislation.”
“He has told members of both
parties that if they can fashion a plan,
he is eager to work with them to get
it done and he has assigned
Secretary [of Homeland Security
Janet] Napolitano to work with stake-
holders on that effort,” Inouye said.
Ralls said he thinks it would be
“logical” for the White House to
endorse UAFA as part of comprehen-
sive reform if the administration favors
passage of both legislative items.
“My belief is that they would like to
see UAFA passed and that they are
committed to comprehensive reform
— and it just seems logical to me that
the two go well together,” Ralls said.
“If we’re going to have a comprehen-
sive bill, it should be truly compre-
hensive and include lesbian and gay
immigrants, too.”
But opposition from the Catholic
Church — a strong voice for the
Hispanic community seeking immi-
gration reform — could be an obsta-
cle. Last year, the U.S. Conference of
Catholic Bishops came out against
UAFA and said they couldn’t support
immigration reform if a provision for
LGBT couples were included in the
larger legislation.
Ralls said the Conference of Catholic
Bishops is “a sole minority voice,” though,
among religious groups that have stated
positions on the legislation. He said
Methodists, Episcopalians, Unitarians
and Jewish groups are among the reli-
gious organizations supporting UAFA.
“The list of faith groups who are
committed to immigration reform that
includes lesbian and gay families is
very long and diverse,” Ralls said. “At
the end of the day, people of faith
should support keeping children with
parents and families together and, in
my view, it is the Christian thing to do.”
Also lacking among the advocacy
groups is unanimity in favor of includ-
ing UAFA as part of the larger bill.
Reform Immigration for America,
an umbrella group for organizations
calling for comprehensive reform,
hasn’t stated a position on including
UAFA in a larger bill. The organiza-
tion didn’t respond to DC Agenda’s
request to comment on its position.
Still, other groups supporting
immigration reform have come out in
favor of including UAFA in compre-
hensive reform. The Fair Immigration
Movement, a project with the Center
for Community Change, endorsed
inclusion of UAFA earlier this month.
Marissa Graciosa, director of
FIRM, said in a statement that her
project supports the inclusion of
UAFA to keep couples together.
“There is power in our diversity,
but we must honor that diversity,” she
said. “And it starts with keeping all
families from all backgrounds togeth-
er. This is why we support the Uniting
American Families Act.”
Ralls said Immigration Equality is an
active member for Reform Immigration
for America and is working to bring
organizations within that umbrella
group in favor of UAFA inclusion.
In addition to FIRM, Ralls said the
Mexican American Legal Defense &
Educational Fund has noted the
importance of including same-sex
couples in immigration reform.
“So there are organizations within
the immigration movement — both
faith groups and immigrant groups
that have been very vocal in their
support of our inclusion,” he said.

Invisible no more in health care
For 20 years Mautner
Project has led in the
struggle for LBT visibility

Lesbian activists, writers and
organizers were at the heart of the
women’s movement that thrived in the
1960s and 70s. Lesbians worked tire-
lessly for the rights of all women,
including the right to abortion and for
publicly funded childcare — issues not
at the forefront of lesbians’ needs. But
those same lesbians were frequently
stigmatized within the movement: In
1969 Betty Friedan famously labeled
us “the lavender menace” and didn’t
renounce that point of view until 1977.
In the 1980s and 90s, gay men in
the U.S. suffered and died by the tens
of thousands from AIDS. Lesbians
advocated aggressively for public sup-
port of efforts to control the epidemic
and volunteered countless hours to
care for their gay friends. A study done
in the 1990s of lesbians in Los
Angeles found that 84 percent had
contributed money to AIDS-related
causes, 53 percent had volunteered
their time, and 31 percent had helped
care for someone with AIDS.
But while lesbians served others,
they often remained invisible.
In 1989, as she was a few weeks
away from dying of breast cancer,
lesbian activist Mary-Helen Mautner
conceived of an organization that

The Washington Post has reported
that some gays are considering get-
ting married under the new D.C. law in
part to be able to visit their partners in
a hospital, but gays should know that
they already have this legal right.
The D.C. Human Rights Act pro-
hibits “public accommodations,” includ-
ing hospitals, from discriminating on
the basis of “martial status,” which
means, “the state of being married, in a
domestic partnership, single, divorced,
separated, or widowed.”
Thus, if a hospital says that two per-
sons living together constitute “family
members” eligible to visit only if they are
married, but that two persons living
together can’t visit each other as “fami-
ly” if they are not married, it is illegally
discriminating on the basis of “marital

Susan Hester and a group of friends
made it happen: the Mary-Helen
Mautner Project for Lesbians with
Cancer was born, with an initial mis-
sion of direct care by volunteers for
lesbians with breast cancer. This
community-based care remains a
vital part of our program today.
For these past 20 years, Mautner
Project (renamed in 2008) has
worked locally and nationally for the
health of women who partner with
women. A vital component of that
health is visibility.
LBT health is deeply affected by
stigma and discrimination. Our com-
munity too often avoids health care
because we’ve experienced hostile
or foolish treatment that assumes
heterosexuality. (No, I’m not preg-
nant. Yes, I’m sure. No really: I’m real-
ly, really sure!)
The best predictor of whether a
woman has health insurance is if she is
married — and more of us don’t have
health insurance than our heterosexu-
al counterparts. Some of us react to
als are more valuable than gay people,
therefore more deserving of elite posi-

hol, or eat too much. We adopt our own
community norms that say these
behaviors are OK, because they’re dif-

But they’re not healthy.
So health is about eating well,
exercising, getting regular checkups
and screenings. But it’s also about
making changes in the society
around us: We can’t all take proper
care of our bodies when we’re swim-
ming in a sea of social ignorance or
hostility. We won’t go for medical care
if we expect to be treated disrespect-
fully. We won’t listen to health profes-
sionals if they aren’t speaking our
language. And we may not change
our behavior if our community does-
n’t support the change.
Mautner Project has educated
some 6,000 health care profession-
als around the country on how to
remove barriers that inhibit them
from giving knowledgeable, respect-
ful care to all their patients. And

Housing Rights Act of 2010
(H.R.4820) has enough time to pass
during this session, because the
111th Congress is running out of
time and hasn’t done much for us.
The Domestic Partnership
Benefits & Obligations Act, (HR.2517
/ S.1102) has already passed out of
committees in both the House &
Senate, but neither has brought the
bill up for a vote. ENDA is still sitting
in committee in both chambers along
with DADT, and of course they aren’t
going to take any action to repeal the
rotten Defense of Marriage Act or
pass the Uniting American Families
Act. The Democrats in Congress
need to stop blabbing about health-
care and pass some of the pro-LGBT
legislation they promised us before
they run out of time. And God help us
if the Republicans win back seats in
both chambers or take back control of
one of the chambers, because that
will doom the passage of any pro-
LGBT legislation for at least another

My partner and I sold our house in
Alexandria and moved into the
District last October. The timing of
the women in our community about
what we need to do for our health,
and how to stand up for ourselves
and what we need and deserve.
For 20 years, we have advocated,
too, with federal and local governments
to make the needs of LBT people cen-
tral, and to respond to those needs.
Whether testifying before the Institute
of Medicine or the Centers for Disease
Control or the District’s health depart-
ment, Mautner Project has led in the
struggle for LBT visibility, and joined
with our many colleague organizations
to press the federal government to
count us in census findings and in
health surveys because too often,
when we’re not counted, we’re treated
as if we don’t count.
The sense of family that led to
Mautner Project’s founding — taking
care of ourselves, taking care of
each other — is today part of our
broader sense of community. As
Ginny Sullivan, one of the board
members of Mautner Project, always
says, when we kick down doors,
we’ve got to pull along with us as
many folks as we can.
On Mautner Project’s 20th anniver-
sary and with the support of
Washington’s LGBT community and
our allies everywhere, we look forward
to knocking down some more barriers.

that, “The Equal Protection Clause of
the United States Constitution prohibits
discrimination without a rational basis
against any class of persons.
Discrimination based on factors such
as one’s sexual orientation or parental
status violates the Equal Protection
Clause of the United States
Constitution.” So sooner or later they
are going to have to admit that the
Equal Protection clause of the U.S.
Constitution trumps the Marshall
Newman amendment in the Virginia

The need for unbiased journalism
You can get news
in 140 characters,
but not an education
By MICHAEL TUNE
My father is a minister. He got his
master’s degree in New Testament
studies — not so that he could learn
about the Bible, but so that he could
learn how to decipher it for himself.
Our house was covered with books,
and his office is now one of the nicest
private libraries of Christian and bib-
lical studies I’ve ever seen.
Growing up in that house, we
learned several things, chief among
them was to listen very carefully to
what was being said, to pay atten-
tion to who said it, and to use rea-
son, based on fact and personal
experience, to make a decision.
Indecisiveness wasn’t tolerated.
Today I read three newspapers
daily. I typically watch two nightly
news broadcasts and one morning
news broadcast. I read several mag-
azines, and my household doesn’t let
a Friday pass without grabbing a
copy of Metro Weekly and DC
Agenda. I also get the Philadelphia
Gay News each week, an excellent
source. Then there are the online
sources: Daily I read four blogs, eight
topical web sites and Kerry Eleveld of
Advocate.com.
You might say that I do this
because I work for so many journal-
ists at the National Lesbian & Gay
Journalists Association. That’s one
very good reason, yes. But I person-
ally came to this organization not
because of a passion for news, but
because of a passion for facts.
Whenever I speak, in private or in
public, I don’t like to be wrong. I like
to have a base knowledge of what’s
going on with a variety of topics. I
want to know who to go to for knowl-
edge, and who to trust. And I require
several sources to do it.
The constant research pays off.
For example, when Michael Jackson
died, everyone who ever met any-
one ever connected to him wanted
to have their 15 minutes. I’d see
opinions on Jackson from his former
bodyguard’s cousin’s pizza-delivery
guy. Should I care what this guy has
to say? No. I hunted for quality, and
the best thing I read on Michael
Jackson was by a man whose fami-
ly had spent time with Jackson at
Neverland when the man was still a
kid. He told of his own time as a
teenager at the ranch. He told of his

college when Michael came to visit.
He even told of an experience, as
an adult, that he shared with
Michael and their children. He knew

many, to keep unbiased journalism
strong. When you go get your news —
whether it’s from Twitter or The New
York Times, Facebook or Fox News —
listen for the truth. Find out who’s talk-
ing, listen for their opinion. Are they
validating an opinion you already had,
or teaching you something you didn’t
know? Can you make the other side’s
argument for them? If not, do you
know enough? If you’re not paying
attention, you’re letting others tell you
what to believe and how to think.
You’ve given your brain over to the
whims of a news-source owner.

‘grease’ is the one that we want

Gay Men’s Chorus puts
gay twist on iconic show

The musical you know and (be
honest now) even love is almost here
— only gayer.
The performance of the new-and-
improved “Grease” will wow you into
whistling show-stopping songbook
standards like “You’re the One That I
Want” and “Summer Nights,” but this
time the show is performed with an
all-male cast by the Gay Men’s
Chorus of Washington. Gay subtext,
in other words, here we come!
It runs only this weekend, March 19-
21, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and
Sunday at 3 p.m., at Lisner Auditorium.
It’s the iconic 1978 musical star-
ring the young John Travolta and
Olivia Newton-John in the classic
tale of good girl meets bad boy — it’s
just that all parts are now played, and
to the hilt, by males.
This time, Danny Zuko — the way-
too-cool-for-school greaser — is
played by boyishly handsome Cory
Claussen, light on his feet in the dance
numbers and sweetly swaggering
through the songs, easily impersonat-
ing a high school “hunk a hunk of burn-
ing love,” while in real life serving on
the staff of the Senate Agriculture
Committee. During Sunday’s rehears-
al, Cory was wearing an anti-Prop 8 T-
shirt emblazoned with the slogan
“Legalize Gay.”
And uptight “good girl” Sandy
Ollson is played adorably by a some-
what credibly virginal but total heart-
throb Steve Sarno, who in his day job
is a staff attorney for the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency.
When they embrace, the sexual
chemistry crackles with double-
entendre desire, and it’s their unlike-
ly courtship — at the beginning of
their senior year at Rydell High, fol-
lowing a whirlwind summer romance
that Danny hopes to set aside while
Sandy meanwhile still pines for more
— that triggers the showdown
between the sexes (so to speak) and
tweaks all the twists and turns until
(sigh) the inevitable happy ending.
In the capable hands of director
John Moran, every possible double-
entendre is milked for its fullest
homoerotic meaning and nostalgic
doo-wop high-jinks and songs that
flow into a stage-full of chorus boys
whose moves will turn Lisner into a
sizzling salute to same-sex sensuali-
ty, such as during the “mooning”
song, when Roger and Jan also
channel the love that dares not speak
its name in a song that ends “there’s
a moon out tonight!”
And the jokes abound. So when
bad-girl Frenchy gives an innocent

name, one of the bad boys calls out
“sure you did!” And other one-liners
dot the script, like when one of the
Rydell students talks about meatless
Fridays in the lunchroom, exclaim-
ing, “I can eat everything, that’s one
of the great things about being
Lutheran.” Right now, as an ex-
Lutheran, I’m still trying to recall
exactly what the other ones were.
So we hear Danny and Sandy
croon their sweet duet about “sum-
mer days drifting away to night,”
while the boys are ager to coax

tell me more, did you get very
far?” — while Danny tries to appear
studly, declaring “summer fling don’t
mean a thing” to maintain his cool
image while secretly wanting to
rekindle his romance with Sandy,
who is meanwhile put off by his
testosterone-fueled appearance of
playing the field.
So the story itself doesn’t change
at all, and it’s wall-to-wall eye candy in
a tasty sampler of bon bons. Frenchy
is still the sexpot whose heart of gold
glitters with at least a couple of karats

worth of cheap come-hither.
Act two storms on stage with an
ensemble dancing “shake it at the
high school rock” and then Sandy
sings “it’s raining on prom night, it’s
raining tears from my eyes.” But the
likely show-stopper will come when
longtime GMCW audience favorite
Peter Fox will appear as Teen
Angel, that “teenage n’er do well,”
while the chorus boys dance
around him like sugar plum fairies
amped to the camp.
Most of the guys in the cast grew
their hair long so they could grease it
back. But all you have to do is find a
date and then get your nostalgia on.
Watch the hula hoops whirl. Watch
the dancers doo wop — yes, there’s
an Italian back-story with these lov-
able grease-balls.
In other words, this show makes you
an offer you can’t refuse, so just plan on
having “fun fun fun” in these not so
innocent days when carefree “summer
love” seems a million miles away. Skip
this one and kick yourself when your
friends tell you what you’ve missed.

McNally, Fierstein,
Lypsinka to light up
spring theatrical season

With spring comes a deluge of
promising new productions, many of
special interest to LGBT theater-
goers. Here’s a sampling.
Gay playwright Terrence McNally is a
lifelong opera devotee who has lovingly
infused opera themes, characters, lore
and trivia into some of his best plays. In
honor of the multiple Tony Award-win-
ning playwright’s passion, the Kennedy
Center (www.kennedy-center.org) pres-
ents “Terrence McNally’s Nights at
the Opera,” a five-week celebration fea-
turing three of the playwright’s most
opera-centric works, through April 18.
The mini-festival kicks off with
McNally’s new backstage drama,
“Golden Age” (through April 4).
According to press notes, “Golden
Age” takes place backstage at the
Théâtre-Italien in Paris on the evening
of Jan. 24, 1835. The occasion is the
premiere of Vincenzo Bellini’s opera “I
Puritani.” Assembled are the compos-
er and his faithful friend, Francesco
Florimo, and the four singers for
whom the opera was expressly com-
posed known the world over as the
Puritani Quartet. Bellini’s rivalry with
his fellow Italian composer, Gaetano
Donizetti, for French favor was at its
height. This opera was to cement his
supremacy. It was to be his last. The
production features Broadway’s Marc
Kudisch and out actor Jeffery Carlson
as Bellini. A talented stage veteran,
Carlson is also known for his role as
transgender Zarf/Zoe on the daytime
soap “All My Children.”
Next up is McNally’s “The Lisbon
Traviata” (March 20 through April 11)
— a tragicomedy about opera obses-
sion featuring longtime gay best
friends and opera buffs played by cel-
ebrated out actors Malcolm Gets and
John Glover. The McNally salute clos-
es with Tyne Daly as Maria Callas in
“Master Class” (March 25 to April 18),
the terrific Tony-award winning play
concerning la Callas and the classes
she taught at Julliard. Daly, who gar-
nered awards for playing TV detective
the Washington-area premiere of
“[title of show]” (April 6 through June
27), a musical by then-struggling writ-
ers about struggling writers writing a
musical. Written and composed by a
pair of gay southerners, Hunter Bell
(book) and Jeff Bowen (music and
lyrics), the wittily titled work is directed
by Matthew Gardiner and features a
young cast including two talented
Helen Hayes Award-winning actors
Erin Driscoll and Jenna Sokolowski.
Also in April, Ganymede Arts’
Jeffrey Johnson plans to slip into a
dress and heels on at least three
separate occasions. First on April 15,
he’s scheduled to unleash his pink-
haired alter ego Galactica for a free
evening of song and sweets at
ACKC, the cocoa bar café on 14th
Street. Next, Johnson reprises his
portrayal of Jackie O’s kookiest
cousin in “Edie Beale Live at Reno
Sweeney” for two nights (April 29-
30) at Cobalt before taking the act to
Joe’s Pub in Manhattan.

is also mounting a production of
“Naked Boys Singing” (May 7
through June 13) at the very intimate
Playbill Café. The title says it all. This

legendary drag creation Lypsinka
takes on James Kirkwood’s campy
saga of two aging divas desperate to
revive their fading careers in
“Lypsinka in Legends!” (June 16
through July 4). With her unique blend
of artistry and postmodern genius, the
undisputed queen of sync will no
doubt breathe new life into Kirkwood’s
rickety vehicle. First performed by
Mary Martin and Carol Channing in
the mid-’80s, “Legends” was revived
three years ago with Joan Collins and
former “Dynasty” co-star Linda Evans
in a multi-city tour that included D.C.
Be sure to catch “Clybourne Park”
at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company
(woollymammoth.net) through April 11.
The play is a powerful take on race
and gentrification in 1950s Chicago.
And when that wraps, “Gruesome
Playground Injuries” debuts May 17
and runs through June 13. It’s the story
of the relationship between two boys

friend can go in helping another.

Old favorites, new
hopefuls highlight
spring’s indie scene

Electropop group Goldfrapp fol-
lows up their last critically acclaimed
release, “Seventh Tree,” with their
fifth studio album, “Head First,” on
March 23. Alison Goldfrapp and Will
Gregory have modified their sound
over their career from electronic bal-
ladry to electropop dancebeats. This
release wouldn’t be out of place in
the ’80s with its retro sound and
visual images evoking Xanadu-era
Olivia Newton John.
Five-piece Norwegian band
Serena-Maneesh are back March
23 with a new release, “S-M: Abyss in
B Minor.” The band has been com-
pared to My Bloody Valentine with
their use of guitar distortion effects
that create their noise pop sound.
Glam rock-disco favorites
Scissor Sisters return with their first
album in four years, “Hurrah! A Year
of Ta-Dah.” Singer Jake Shears said
in promotional materials that this
release will sound more “masculine.”
He also said he will be singing with a
“deeper” voice as he would not be
relying as much on the falsetto heard
in previous albums. The album is due
out later this month.
Erykah Badu follows up 2008’s
“New Amerykah Part One (4th World
War)” with “New Amerykah Part Two
(Return of the Ankh)” on March 30.
Expect Badu to tap into her feelings
about romance and relationships.

with a hot list of producers like Ne-Yo,
Missy Elliot and Jermaine Dupri.
Let’s hope she can bring it back to
her “The Boy Is Mine” heyday.
Coming April 6 is the highly antici-
pated release of Madonna’s “Sticky &
Sweet Tour,” which was the most suc-
cessful tour of all time by a solo artist.
The footage used for this release was
filmed over four days from her shows in
Buenos Aires. It will be available in a
CD/DVD and Blu-Ray format.

survivor Melissa Etheridge is out

Jones and the Dap Kings release
their fourth studio album, “I Learned
the Hard Way,” on April 6. Throughout
their previous releases, they have
continued their sound fronted by
Sharon Jones, who has a vocal
range that is reminiscent of early
Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin.
MGMT return with their follow up to
2007’s critically acclaimed “Oracular
Spectacular” with “Congratulations”
on March 16. The new release will be
a complete piece rather than contain-
ing individual singles as on their first
album. First released track “Flash
Delerium” has them sounding less
poppy than before.
Electronic group Javelin recreate
the digital sounds of the ’80s on their
new album, “No Mas.” Expect the
unexpected as they deliver their new
release on April 20.
Gay indie singer-songwriter
Rufus Wainwright returns on April
20 with his sixth studio album, “All
Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu.”
This release is mostly produced by
Wainwright. Of the 12 songs, three
include adaptations of William
Shakespeare’s sonnets.
Singer and songwriter Kate Nash
debuts her next album, “My Best
Friend is You,” on April 20. Bernard
with her tenth studio album,
“Fearless Love,” on April 27.
Etheridge has said this will be even
more rock oriented than her past
efforts. The radio-friendly lead single,
which is the title track, shows poten-
tial of becoming a well deserved hit.
On April 20 comes the long-
awaited release of “Judy Garland &
Liza Minnelli: Live at the Palladium.”
Recorded live on Nov. 8, 1964,
before a standing room only house at
London’s Palladium Theater and
boasting 25 tracks, this is sure to be
a must-have for fans of this iconic
mother-daughter pair.
After a five-year absence, Toni
Braxton makes a return to the music
scene on May 4 with “Pulse.” Braxton
chose to collaborate with an impressive
list of producers and songwriters,
including Frank E (Madonna, Flo Rida),
Steve Mac (Leona Lewis), Lucas Secon
(Britney Spears, The Pussycat Dolls),
Dapo Torimiro (David Archuletta,
Brandy), and David Foster (Whitney
Butler, ex-guitarist of Suede, pro-
duced her album. First track and
video, “Do Wah Doo,” sees Nash
delivering “girl band” pop.
After a four-year hiatus, Sweden’s

album, “Clinging to a Scheme,” on
April 20. File this one under ethereal
dream pop for those lazy Sunday
afternoons.
New York-based electronic duo,

debut album Voluspa on April 26. First
track, “Hide Me,” sounds like a cross
between Goldfrapp and Dot Allison.
The New Pornographers head
back into the indie scene with their
fifth release, “Together,” on May 4.
The album features appearances by
Zach Condon of Beirut and Annie
Clark of St. Vincent.
Swedish duo Club 8 will release
their seventh album, “The People’s
Record,” on May 12. First track
“Western Hospitality” shows influences
from Bow Wow Wow of the ’80s.
On May 18, ex-Everything But
the Girl’s Tracey Thorn comes out
with a follow up to 2007’s “Out of
the Woods,” which saw her once
again drifting into the electro-pop
arena. If first single, “Oh, the
Divorces!” is an indicator of what’s
to come, this could be a less dance-
driven affair given its violins and

Gay-themed films remain anom-
alies at multiplexes but LGBT options
abound for those willing to go beyond
the beaten path, especially in DVD land
where a bounty of winners — several of
which were screened at last year’s Reel
Affirmations D.C. gay film festival — will
soon be available to watch at home.

• “I Love You Phillip Morris” —
This long-delayed (it was screened at
Sundance in early 2009 and has been
in limbo ever since) dramedy stars Jim
Carrey and Ewan McGregor as gay
men who fall in love in prison.
Distributors admitted they were wary
because of a lengthy and intense sex
scene between the two stars early in
the film. Lewis Tice, director of publicity
and marketing at TLA Releasing, said
“The depiction of the sexual activity was
far more than I’ve ever seen in a main-
stream film with a mainstream celebri-
ty” and admitted it had turned off poten-
tial distributors. No word on how much
of the scene remains — the film was re-
edited after Sundance — but the movie,
described by Carrey as “a movie about
humanity” and “the lengths we go to for
acceptance and love,” features several
tender moments between the stars.
Consolidated Pictures Group will
release the film in limited release in
U.S. theaters April 30. It’s done decent
box office in Russia and France where
it was released earlier this year.
• “Sex and the City 2” — The fab
four — Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte
and Miranda — return in this second
cinematic follow-up to the hit TV
show. Opens May 28.

• “Prodigal Sons” — With a short
run at D.C.’s Landmark E Street Cinema
that wrapped last week and a screening
at last year’s Reel Affirmations film festi-
val, this gay- and trans-themed docu-
mentary has made the rounds but if you
haven’t seen it, plan to Netflix it after its
May 18 DVD release date. It’s a won-
derfully unpredictable family drama
about three brothers. One’s gay, one is
mentally ill and the other — the film-
maker Kimberly Reed — transitioned to
the opposite sex. Reed returns to the
rural mid-West for her high school
reunion but that’s only the beginning.
• “Sometimes in Life” — Jill, a
young fashion designer, finds herself
feeling insecure about her relation-
ship with her flirtatious girlfriend and
her budding fashion career. The
straight life beckons unexpectedly
when she meets Rob, a 30-some-
thing slacker who’s soul searching
following his father’s death. May 18.
• “And Then Came Lola” — A time-
bending lesbian romp with an irreverent
nod to the popular art-house classic “Run,
Lola, Run,” a talented photographer Lola
(Ashleigh Sumner) is on the verge of suc-
cess in both love and career but could
lose it all if she doesn’t make it to a cru-
cial meeting on time. Characteristically,
she’s late. She races through the streets
of San Francisco to meet up with her
girlfriend Casey (Jill Bennett). The film
drew raves on the gay film circuit last
year. It comes to DVD May 18.
• “Greek Pete” — The title charac-
ter is a popular male escort whom we
meet when he arrives in London hop-
ing to establish himself with a nice flat,
decent laptop and good promotional
photos. The process, in which Pete
uses guys working in the sex industry
to establish himself, blurs the boundary
between fiction and documentary and
promises authentic and intimate
insights into the lives of male escorts. It
comes to DVD May 4.
• “College Boys Live” — Another
Reel Affirmations-screened flick, this
follows three guys in suburban Florida
who start CollegeBoysLive.com, a site
on which their lives are aired round the
clock from their house, rigged with 32 cam-
eras that film their every move.They say it’s
a statement that gays are like everyone
else. Their neighbors insist it’s a porno-
graphic whorehouse and sue to have them
evicted. It comes to DVD May 4.
• “The Amazing Truth About

How to cull just a baker’s dozen
— 13 in all — of the best of D.C.-area
fine arts offerings may be a fool’s
errand because of the literal over-
flowing cornucopia of painting and
sculpture and photography and
video, an array of so many dishes on
the groaning banquet table of the
nearby galleries and museums.
But fools rush in anyway. And a feast
for the senses awaits the art lover this
spring, from the baroque excesses of
17th century Spanish sacred images of
the passion of Christ, to a stunning dis-
play of Georgia O’Keefe abstractions, to
the feminist aesthetic of contemporary
Turkish artists confronting the gaze of
male gender-privilege, to “the boys of
Washington” — the beefcake of the P
Street beach and environs brought to
pigment and canvas and captured in the
camera’s aperture.
Someone once wrote that “something
for everyone is not enough.” But for the art
lover seeking insight from what the eye
can see, there is surely something for
everyone in our very likely idiosyncratic list
of the top 13, organized here in a purely
arbitrary fashion — alphabetically.

Do not miss a first-time-ever U.S.
exhibit of 53 works, most never seen
before on this side of the Atlantic, col-
lected by two remarkable and well-to-do
sisters born in Wales more than 100
years ago, Margaret and Gwendoline
Davies. The show, “Turner to Cezanne:
Masterpieces from the Davies
Collection, National Museum of Wales”
is a must-see roundup of a collection
that at one point was the largest holding
of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist
paintings in Britain. The works are
ordered chronologically by when they
were purchased and show the changes
in taste moving from picturesque realism
to more modernist styles such as Van
Gogh’s dramatic “Rain-Auvers,” this rain-
drenched village scene among the sis-
ters’ final purchases and completed only
a few weeks before the artist killed him-
self. The show runs through April 25.
Coming to the Corcoran on April
10 through July 18 is a retrospective
of all aspects of the pioneering pho-
tography of “Eadweard Muybridge in a
Time of Change” showing all aspects
of his art from his studies of animal
and human locomotion — with many
male nudes — to innovative land-
scapes and documentary subjects.
Also opening on April 10 and clos-
ing in July is a new multi-projection
video installation, “American Falls,” by
the experimental filmmaker Phil
Solomon, inspired by the Corcoran’s
well-known masterpiece “Niagara” by
painter Frederic Edwin Church and
also by D.C.’s monumental memorials.

These twin Smithsonian-managed
and adjacent museums are centers of
South and East Asian art and culture. Be
sure to see the eye-opening abstract
moonlit landscapes or “nocturnes” by ori-
entalist James McNeill Whistler. These
15 works of “The Texture of Night” will be
on view at the Freer through June 30.
At the Sackler, meanwhile, are two
remarkable exhibitions exploring the
sacred arts of Tibetan Buddhism. The
first, “The Tibetan Shrine from the Alice
S. Kandell Collection,” an extraordinary
Tibetan Buddhist shrine room, filled
with bronze sculptures, scroll paintings
and textile banners, acknowledged by
devotees as a sacred space, are on
public display for the first time.
The second is “Lama, Patron,
Artist: The Great Situ Panchen,” sculp-
tures and paintings from the 18th-cen-
tury artist and founder of the Palpung
Monastery. Beginning on Sunday,
March 14, the sacred art of making a
sand mandala has been on exhibit in
the Sackler pavilion as monks work
together to execute the intricate yet
geometrically balanced composition
for meditation. The work continues
daily through Saturday, March 20, and
the dissolution ceremony takes place
starting at noon Sunday, March 21.

Gordon Binder’s ‘SATURDAY: COFFEE AND THE PAPER OUT’
Beginning May 15 through the end
of January, the Sackler will host “Gods
of Angkor: Bronzes from the National
Museum of Cambodia,” 36 exceptional
works of religious sculpture and cast-
ing, some only recently unearthed, dat-
ing from the ancient time of third centu-
ry BCE to the 14th century CE.

This is the museum “where Fabulous
lives.” The first U.S. exhibition — “Sevres
Then and Now: Tradition and Innovation
in Porcelain, 1750-2000” — presents
through May 30 the earliest Sevres
porcelain pieces alongside contempo-
rary works of the 20th and 21st centuries
and shows how innovation has led to
Servres’ pre-eminence as a porcelain
factory. The final evening in a four-part

“Joseph Albers: Innovation and
Inspiration.” Be sure and see this
show, which closes on April 11, for a
great survey of this Bauhaus mod-
ernist grand master notable for his
use of color and for painting squares
within squares. At first controversial,
when he fled Nazi Germany in the
1930s and took refuge at the experi-
mental Black Mountain College, crit-
ics scoffed at his paintings as merely
decorative. Now we know better. See
for yourself how his use of color
changes can affect your own mood.
“Directions: John Gerrard,” through
May 31, discover how this Irish artist
uses customized 3-D gaming software,
taking 360-degree photographs of farm
scenes and oil fields and then uses his
computer to simulate cinematic move-
ment around these landscapes as he
re-imagines landscape scenery, espe-
cially from America’s Dust Bowl peri-
od. A technological tour-de-force!
“Yves Klein: With the Void, Full
Powers.” This show should be a knock-
out when it opens May 20 (through
Sept. 12). It will survey the work of per-
haps the most radical and innovative
mid-20th century European artist,
whose untimely death at 34 came at
the height of his powers as a pioneer of
monochromatic abstraction — such as
large canvases vacant except for fields
of blue or gold; conceptualism — emp-
tying instead of filling a gallery; and
performance art — such as using pig-
ment in public to paint the bodies of
naked women. And take note of the
special blue paint he invented to glow.

gay artist and pop-culture impressario. The show
consists simply of 10 silkscreen images of such fig-
ures as Einstein and Freud and Buber — and the

author of the catalogue “Warhol’s Jews reconsid-
ered,” will discuss the history of the show and its

vels of “The Sacred Made Real: Spanish Painting
and Sculpture, 1600-1700,” a true landmark collec-
tion of paintings and polychrome painted and gild-
ed wooden sculptures, cross-over media depicting
the passion of Christ and the devotion of Mary.
Get ready for high Baroque intensity and

Animals,” a playful exhibit of all the ways that
African artists have depicted the animal world,
from spiders and snakes through large biting ani-
mals, the beasts with open jaws and sharp teeth
appearing as mask designed to protect villages
from harm or for use in tribal initiation ceremonies.

crocodiles protecting their eggs by Kaballa, a
member of a central African modernist art move-

Forget boxy and boring, today’s
econo hatchbacks mix shapely sheet
metal with flared fenders and street-
cred wheels. And while all the sexy
rides here may slip effortlessly into
the smallest of parking spots, they
also boast loads of cargo space.
What’s more, these cars are
affordable: Each offers stellar gas
mileage and MSRP’s under —
sometimes way under — $25,000.
And because they’re fun to drive,
these hot hatches help drivers keep
their cool — in rush hour or on the
way to happy hour.
HONDA FIT
$15,000
MPG: 27 city/33 highway
Cargo room: 20.6 cubic feet
(57.3 cubic feet with rear seats down)
Last year, the popular Fit got a fab
redo: edgier styling, more legroom,
bigger seats for full-sized keisters,
and a backseat that can be folded
without having to remove the head-
rests. Other plusses include lots of
rear visibility, gobs of cargo space,

when cornering. A pint-sized sibling,

Inches are everything, at least with
MINI Coopers. While the Clubman
sports the same crisp ride and high- Volvo C30
quality interior as the base MINI —

Frisbee-sized speedometer — it’s
actually 9.4 inches longer. This means
more cargo and passenger room, and
a smoother ride. But instead of a the
rear hatch opening upward, there are
two vertical “barn doors.” As for side
doors, the driver gets one, but there
are two quirky “clamshell” doors on
the other side. Such clamshell doors
are supposed to help rear-seat pas-
sengers slide inside, but anyone with
a Patsy and Edina sensibility will find
the clunky configuration less than,
well, absolutely fabulous. For even
