2.3

STRUCTURAL STRENGTH: The structure or mounting surface to which

this equipment is installed must meet the strengths specified below for the
application selected:
A.

Fall Arrest: The structure selected for personal fall arrest applications
must be capable of sustaining static loads applied in the directions
permitted by the personal fall arrest system of at least: 3,600 lbs. with
certification of a qualified person; or 5,000 lbs. without certification. See
ANSI Z359.1 for certification definition. When more than one personal
fall arrest system is attached to a structure, the strengths stated above
must be met at each location independently.
From OSHA 1926.500 and 1910.66: Anchorages used for attachment
of personal fall arrest systems shall be independent of any anchorage
being used to support or suspend platforms, and capable of supporting
at least 5,000 lbs. per user attached, or be designed, installed, and
used as part of a complete personal fall arrest system which maintains
a safety factor of at least two, and is under the supervision of a
qualified person.

B.

Work Positioning: The structure to which the work positioning system

is attached must sustain static loads applied in the directions permitted
by the work positioning system of at least 3,000 lbs., or twice the
potential impact load, whichever is greater. See OSHA 1926.502. When
more than one work positioning system is attached to an anchorage,
the strengths stated above must be multiplied by the number of work
positioning systems attached to the anchorage.

C.

Personnel Riding: The structure selected for personnel riding

applications must be capable of sustaining static loads applied in the
directions permitted by the personnel riding system of at least 2,500
lbs. Each davit arm and base installation must be independently
capable of sustaining this load.

D.

Material Handling: The structure selected for material handling

applications must be capable of sustaining static loads applied in the
directions permitted by the material handling system of at least 2,500
lbs. Each davit arm and base installation must be independently
capable of sustaining this load.

E.

Rescue: The structure selected for rescue applications must be

capable of sustaining static loads applied in the directions permitted by
the rescue system of at least 2,500 lbs. Each davit arm and base
installation must be independently capable of sustaining this load.

WARNING: Davit arms and mounting bases that are installed for personnel
riding, material handling, or rescue applications only, must be labeled as such to
prevent the system from being used for fall arrest or work positioning
applications, which require greater structural strength.

OPERATION AND USE

WARNING: Do not alter or intentionally misuse this equipment. Consult DBI/SALA

when using this equipment in combination with components or subsystems other
than those described in this manual. Some subsystem and component
combinations may interfere with the operation of this equipment. Use caution
when using this equipment around moving machinery, electrical hazards,
chemical hazards, and sharp edges.
WARNING: Consult your doctor if there is reason to doubt your fitness to safely
absorb the shock from a fall arrest. Age and fitness seriously affect a worker's
ability to withstand falls. Pregnant women or minors must not use this equipment.
3.1

BEFORE EACH USE of this equipment, carefully inspect it according to

section 5.0 of this manual.

3.2

PLAN your system before using this equipment. Consider all factors that
will affect your safety during use of this equipment. Consider the following
points when planning your system:
A.

HAZARD EVALUATION: An evaluation of job site hazards is

necessary before starting work. Consult applicable OSHA and industry

standards for guidelines and regulatory requirements on issues such

as; confined space entry, personal fall arrest systems, and single point
adjustable scaffolds.
B.

WORK SITE GEOMETRY: The installation and use of the davit arm
and mounting base must be consistent with the geometric
requirements specified in sections 3.4 and 3.5. When suspending
working lines from the davit arm, check for obstructions or sharp edges
in the work path. Avoid working where the user may swing and hit an
object, or where lines may cross or tangle with that of another worker.

C.

BACK-UP FALL ARREST SYSTEM: When using the davit arm and
mounting base as a support for suspending a worker at a work level, or
for personnel riding applications, a back-up fall arrest system is
required. See OSHA 29 CFR 1910.28 and 1926.451. The davit arm has
an auxiliary connection point for a back-up personal fall arrest system.

D.

RESCUE: In the event of an accident with injuries or other medical

emergency, it is critical to have a rescue system in place. Response
time often plays an important role in the survival of an injured worker.
Users of this equipment must be trained in emergency procedures.

3.3

REQUIREMENTS FOR PERSONAL FALL ARREST SYSTEMS: Personal

fall arrest systems used with the davit arm and base typically include; full
body harness, connecting subsystem (self retracting lifeline or lifeline and
rope grab), and necessary hardware to connect the system. Personal fall
arrest systems used with this davit arm and mounting base must meet
applicable OSHA requirements. Personal fall arrest systems that use a full
body harness must limit the fall arrest forces to 1,800 lbs., and arrest the fall
within 42 inches. Body belts, unless part of a full body harness, are not
recommended for use with this equipment.

3.4

INSTALLATION OF MOUNTING BASES:

A.

FIXED BASE: See Figure 4. The fixed base davit bases are for general
purpose use for most applications. The fixed base davit bases are
