Part B: Problems

Question 1 (Marks:15 (10,5))

In a research on the use of cellphones by 8 individuals, 5 persons use i-phones and
another 3 use the Samsung brand. Three persons are selected randomly and simultaneously
from the group. Find the probability that:
a) None of the selected individuals uses i-phone.
b) More persons in the sample use i-phone than Samsung.

Question 2 Marks:20(3,3,3,6,5)
Refer to Question 1 and assume the persons in the sample are selected at random and with
replacement. Define a random variable X as the number of persons in the sample that use
i-phones.
a) What is the probability distribution of X? Mention name, parameters and possible
values.
b) Write the probability mass function pX (x).
c) What is the expected value and standard deviation of X?
d) Find the probability that at least one selected person uses i-phone.
e) Define B as the random event at least one person uses i-phone. Find the conditional
probability mass function pX/B (x) at x = 1.

0 otherwise
a) Find C.

Question 5 (Marks:20 (10 each)) The manufacturer of a particular battery pack

for a laptop computer claims the battery pack can function for 8 hours, on the average,
before having to be recharged. Assuming the functioning time of the battery is a random
variable normally distributed with average = 8 hours and standard deviation = 1 hours
