What is an Essay?
An essay in generally speaking a written composition
contains an expression of ones personal opinions or
ideas on a subject.
The subject is generally given to you, and you are left to
select and Arrange your material. The process of
selection and arrangement must always be completed
before you begin to write.
Essay writing is an art, which may have some steps, to be
followed. i.e..,
1) Collection of material
2) Arrangement of material
3) Outline
4) Body - Paragraphs
Parts of the Essay
Generally we have 3 parts in an essay.
1) The Introduction
2) The Body
3) The conclusion
Introduction: Should be very brief
Should be arresting mind of the reader
Should have a very short paragraph
Consist of definition (or) explanation of the title
Sometimes is a very brief story (or) general
remarks relating to the subject.
Well began is half done
2) The Body: - Main part at the essay
Consists of facts/ illustrations / reflections of the
writer on given subject.
Should be divided into some paragraphs
Proper connection should be shown among
paragraphs
Keep to the point
Write simple words
Avoid euphemism/ verbose
Follow structural approach When something can be read without effort, great effort
has gone into its writing.

3) The conclusion: Ending should be short and striking like the
beginning
Should be natural
Giving short summary may be done
Dont fizzle out.
The last sentence above all should be pleasing both to the
mind and to the ear.
Classification of Essay
Essays may divided into 6 kinds.
1) Narrative Essays
2) Descriptive Essays
3) Reflective Essays
4) Expository Essays

6) Argumentative Essays
1. Narrative Essays:- These are of the narration of some
event, series of events. They can be done on such subjects
like.
1. Incidents
2. An accidents or A Natural disaster (flood, a fire, a
storm, an earthquake)
3. A Journey (or) Voyage
4. A Trip or a Walk.
5. A visit to place of Interest
6. A story (real or imaginary)
7. Biographies
2. Descriptive essay:These are of description of person, place or thing this
may treat of such subjects as follows:
1. Animals, plants, fruits, minerals etc.
2. Towns, Ports, Ships, buildings
(Delhi, The Tajmahal. The National museum, The
Zoo.)
3. Aspects and Phenomena of Nature
(Volcanoes, the monsoon, water fall)
4. Manufactured articles (motorcars, TV, rockets)
5. Character-Sketches ( a postman, a gardener, a peasant)
6. Of Favourite Book.
3. Reflexive Essays:It consists of reflective or thoughts on some subject,
generally abstract in nature. Ex:1) Habits, qualities, feelings, capacities (Punctuality,
good manners)
Serial, political and domestic topics (caste system, family
planning, Unemployment, national integration, Aids)
4. Expositary Essay:It is an explanatory essay. It consists of an exposition of
some subject.
Like 1) Scientific topics (wireless telephone, computer)
2) Literary topics (appreciation of author)
3) Quotation / sayings
4) Institutions/ industries/occupation
5. Imaginative Essays:In this, ones imagination plays a free part such as
1) If I were a millionaire
2) The adventures of a rupee.
6. Argumentative Essays:It deals with advantages and disadvantages or for
against types of questions and require that a reasoned
choice should be made between them.
Ex :- Computer a boon or a bane,
Economical and financial issues
Burning issues
Recaptulation:
1) Do not start writing at once.
2) Set down the various ideas
3) Select your ideas
4) Stick to these points.
5) Arrange these ideas
6) Divide into paragraphs
7) Use simple words and short sentences
8) Be clear and brief
9) Maintain rules of language
