INTRODUCTION TO STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS & EARTHQUAKE ENGG: CE 409

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGG., (MAIN CAMPUS), UET, PESHAWAR

Midterm examination, 7th semester Fall 2014 semester: Duration=2 hours & 15 minutes.
ATTEMPT ALL THE QUESTIONS. SUPPORT THE THEORTICAL DISCUSSION WITH
APPROPRIATE FIGURES/GRAPHS WHERE NECESSARY.
I
(a) What are the four serious configurations of buildings resulting in poor seismic performance?
Discuss the structural damages associated with each configuration and suggest at least one
remedial measure in each case.
(b) Determine the natural time periods for the systems shown in Figures 1 and 2. Take
Ebeam=29,000 k/in2, Ibeam = 200 in4, Lbeam= 10 ft, Stiffness of spring = 500 lb/in, respectively.
Neglect the self weights of beam and springs.
(16+12)
II
(a) Differentiate between (i) free and forced vibrations (ii) periodic and random vibrations (iii)
Undamped and damped vibrations
(b) A 5 kg magnet is dropped onto the end of a steel cantilever beam (Figure 3) with a velocity of
0.5 m/s. The magnet stick to beam but the impact causes vibration in the beam. The beam is 2.1
m long and has a moment of inertia I = 3 x 10 6 m4. Neglect mass of the beam and determine
the amplitude of equivalent static force. Take E=210x 109 N/m2.
(12+12)
III
(a) Discuss underdamped and over damped systems. Also discuss the difference in term of
displacement-time variation.
(b) A machine of weight W=4000 lb is mounted on the midpoint of 10 ft long simply supported
steel beam having = 0.125. The machine produces a harmonic force of magnitude p(t)= 5000
Sin 55t (lb) in the vertical direction . Determine the maximum possible dynamic displacements
that can produce in the beam under the action of above given harmonic force. Take I=180 in 4,
E= 29,000 k/in2
(8+12)
IV
(a) Differentiate between natural frequency and exciting frequency. Discuss the effect of their
relative values on the dynamic displacements produced in a damped SDOF system
(b) The steel frame shown in figure is subjected to a sinusoidal ground motion u g(t)=0.2 Sin 5.3t
inches. Compute the amplitude of ground accelerations Also determine the amplitudes of
displacement, the equivalent static force and acceleration at the top end of frame. Take E=
29,000 ksi and Icolumn= 60 in4 , I beam= and = 0.05
(12+16)
