change.
Its nine oclock in the evening. Ive been in my office all day, and Im feeling very tired. Ive just finished
answering the last email of the day. It was a request for a sponsorship from a local soccer team. Sorry, but
we dont have any money to invest right now, is our answer. I feel bad about refusing to support them as we
have done for the last five years, but my boss says that we have to find other marketing ideas. I dont like my
job anymore. Ive felt depressed about it for a very long time now, and its clear to me that the moment has
come to make a decision about what I want to do.
Ive worked for this company since 2003, and I know everything about my job. This should be an advantage,
but Ive begun to find it more and more boring. Im a marketing manager, and this is what I studied in college
so I should be pretty happy about it. And I was, until one morning six months ago when I woke up without
any energy. All I wanted was to stay in bed and not go to work. At first, I thought I was just a little tired, but
now I know its something more serious than that. I need a change, and I need it now. But what type of
change?
We spend so much time at work that it influences our life enormously. Feelings are not important in my job,
only money, sales and competition. This is not what I want. Ive thought about this for a while, and I now
realize that what I really want to do is work with disabled children again.
When I was in college, I had a part-time job with a company that organized events for children and teenagers
with disabilities. It was so much fun. We took kids in wheelchairs to rock concerts. We asked actors to read
books to blind children. It was great seeing what pleasure these simple things gave to these young people
who had a more difficult life than their friends. When I finished my degree, I decided I wanted a serious
career, and I accepted the job with the company I currently work for. Was it the right thing to do? It probably
was at the time. But it isnt anymore, and I have to find the courage to give it up and start all over again.
