Just Thinking
By: May Jones
Its an unusually warm, colorful, and beautiful Columbus Day, but Hairy doesnt
seem to notice. Hes sticking like glue to the limb of an autumn colored maple tree
in front of my deck. Hes not more than the length of my 5 year old granddaughter
away from me. Moving his head rapidly from side to side, he looks as if hes trying
to get water out of his ears. He makes a deliberate peek sound, and moves
backward as effortlessly as forward: in both directions hopping happily. The pleasant
scent of a wood burning stove just drifted past my nose, but he doesnt seem to
notice that either. Hes moving his head up and down now, instead of side to side,
as he pecks incessantly at the suet hanging from the tree. Theres an assiduous
drum-like rhythm to his efforts. His tail is tucked in tightly to the bottom of the suet
holder: necessary for balance I presume. There are three varieties of suet for
Hairy to choose from: berry, peanut, and sunflower. Today he seems to prefer the
berry one.
When spooked by an unexpected sound, he flies to a branch farther away for
safety. Once the imagined danger has passed, he cautiously inspects the area
before swiftly swooping back to the branch of tasty morsels. With bits of red on
either side of his head and black and white feathers, he looks simply dashing
against the crimson maple leaves. He looks equally as handsome against the snow
that clings to the same limb in winter.
Hairy is taking a well deserved break now, and appears to be sharpening his
beak on the bark of the tree, every once in a while giving it a good jab. Now there
are two of them. His call changes to a louder and more aggressive tone that shouts:
this is my branchfind your own!
Hairy has gotten as used to me as the fake owl sitting a few feet away from his
feeder. I can drink my tea and crunch on my crackers, and he pays little mind;
although he never takes his eyes off me for too long. He trusts, but verifies. I get
the hairy eyeball.
I wondered if I could write 400 words about my observations of a hairy
woodpecker; and there you have it its done- 400 words about a hairy woodpecker.

Bennington Vermont Area Announces Optimist Informational Meeting:
Bennington, VT Optimism has arrived in Bennington and residents wishing
to help improve the lives of youth are invited to attend an informational
meeting about a new Optimist Club at 6:00 P.M. - Oct 26th at Olins, 334
Pleasant St.
Community leaders and service-minded individuals will be on hand at the meeting to
talk about the future club and to gather ideas about how the club can improve the local
community and how volunteers can get involved.
Optimist Clubs throughout the world conduct positive service projects in their communities aimed at providing a helping hand to youth. Members of Optimist Clubs strive to
maintain an upbeat attitude and help empower young people to be the best they can be.
Each Optimist Club determines the best way it can serve children in the local community and develops service projects to suit those needs.
Our children are the future of this community, and its up to us to make sure they have
the tools they need to be good citizens with a promising future, said Brian Dempsey. A
local Optimist Club can do just that, but we need volunteers to help determine the biggest areas of need and to help put our plans into action.
Optimist International is one of the worlds largest service club organizations with 75,000
adult and youth members in 2,600 clubs in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and
Mexico and throughout the world. Carrying the motto Bringing Out the Best in Kids,
Optimists conduct positive service projects that reach more than six million young people
each year. To learn more about Optimist International, please call (314) 371-6000 or
visit the organizations website at www.optimist.org.

THE PAINTINGS OF D. STEVENS BURGESS AT THE

CCC
A new exhibit featuring the artwork of Salem artist, D. Stevens
Burgess, will be on display during October and November in
the first floor Benn Room of the Salem Courthouse Community
Center. Stevens was born in New Delhi, India and studied art in
Bangkok, Thailand and New York. His exhibit contains impressionistic work focusing on land, water and the natural world.
His studies are creations of his own imagination, and he no longer
uses points of reference in any of his pieces. His tones are subtle,
and his paintings draw the viewer into the landscape in a most
relaxing manner. Stevens has exhibited his work in several area
galleries with this being his fourth exhibit at the CCC. The Benn
room is handicap accessible and open to the public.
VENDORS NEEDED FOR THE CCCS ART AND CRAFT

HARRY ORLYKS WORK WILL BE EXHIBITED AT
MCCARTEES BARN in Salem, New York from through October 31st. The exhibition of fifty paintings, curated by Evera
Sue Clary, provides an in-depth look at the artists work from
1985-2015, which embodies the pure essence of landscape painting, Orlyks paintings are rooted in the seasonal landscapes of
Washington County. They have echoes of the Hudson River
School, but filtered through the use of color and composition of
the Abstract Expressionists. They are strikingly beautiful. The
winter paintings are composed of a pallet of umber, browns and
eggshell whites that capture the barren beauty of the land. Marmalade oranges and cobalt blues evoke the vividness of a hot
summer afternoon. Orlyks work is ambitious. Because he produces a painting a day his work transcends predictable landscape
painting. He calls it a portrait of days: an evolving visual journal of sunlight, land and his own emotional response to a sense
of place. The land is a friend of mine. I enjoy sitting down and
listening to it. His painting process is unconventional. Every
afternoon he gets in his van, carefully chooses his location, clamps
his canvas to the steering wheel, and paints. He always asks permission of the people who own the land. As a result he forges a
connection with them. Orlyk was born in 1947 in Troy, New
York. He attended graduate school at University of Nebraska at
Lincoln, where he was taught by a number of influential Nebraskan painters. For over forty years he has consistently shown his
work across the country, including the Carrie Haddad Gallery in
Hudson, New York and the Beamesderfer Gallery in Highland
Park, New Jersey, as well as internationally. In 1995 he was the
recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. He lives in Salem, New
York with his family. For further inquires please contact Evera
Sue Clary, McCartees Barn, 518 854 3857 sueclary@hotmail.com

THE IMPORTANCE OF FINDING BREAST CANCER EARLY

The goal of screening exams for early breast cancer detection is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms. Screening
refers to tests and exams used to find a disease, such as cancer, in people who do not have any symptoms. Early detection
means using an approach that lets breast cancer get diagnosed earlier than otherwise might have occurred. Breast cancers that
are found because they are causing symptoms tend to be larger and are more likely to have already spread beyond the breast.
In contrast, breast cancers found during screening exams are more likely to be smaller and still confined to the breast. The size
of a breast cancer and how far it has spread are some of the most important factors in predicting the prognosis (outlook) of a
woman with this disease. Most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save thousands of lives each year, and
that many more lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests.
Following the American Cancer Society's guidelines for the early detection of breast cancer improves the chances that breast
cancer can be diagnosed at an early stage and treated successfully.
