Thank You

Thank you so much for all your

prayers, telephone calls, emails, get
well cards, etc., pertaining to my recent total
left knee replacement surgery on September
10th. I am doing much better each week due to
the exercises I am required to do daily at home
and at my weekly outpatient physical therapy
sessions that help with my balance and
flexibility. I need to use a cane for the time
being because I am walking with two total
knee implants now since I also had surgery in
August 2010 to totally replace my right knee. I
guess the surgeries are the price I am now
paying for being a long distance runner in my
younger days. Had I only known then what I
know now. My balance is still a little shaky but
I should be able to store the cane away with the
walker in a few more weeks. On a positive
note, I have lost 14 pounds which is good but I
have been told that there are other weight loss
methods that are a lot less drastic. Just know
that you all are a blessing to me and have been
missed very much! See you soon.
Sincerely,
Phil Forbes

Childrens Sabbath

At Childrens Moments for

the past six weeks we have lit a
candle to remind us of the need of children
around the world.
Today is the end of the organized
Prayer Vigil for children who cry out How
Long Must I Cry for Help? It often reflects the
desperate needs of myriads of children around
the world for food, shelter, clothing, education
and more. Please continue to keep children
who lack, food, shelter, clothing, etc. in your
prayers.

Harvest Festival

Saturday, October 31
from 4 - 8 P.M. Casa de Oracin will be hosting
a great community festival in Fellowship Hall
and Patio areas. It will be a carnival
atmosphere with games, bounce house, cotton
candy, popcorn, and prizes. Each child will go
home with a bag of goodies.
Casa will be sharing the times of ours
and their services and activities. It would be
great for some of us to help them and get to
know each other better. I heard comments on
how nice the shared service was and that we
should do it more often. So come on out and
get to know our Casa brothers and sisters in
this fun activity.
You can still provide candy for the
goody bags. Look for the big pumpkin box in
the Narthex, come on either Friday or Saturday
and help Casa de Oracin set up or come help
staff the event from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. (or any part
of the time) on the 31st
Please let me know as soon as possible of
your intent to participate
Donna W.

A Call for Volunteer

Gardeners to Grow Sweet
Peas for Next Year's Easter
Cross.
Last spring, seven of our members
grew sweet peas for our Easter Cross, and
that gardening venture was a huge success
on Easter morning
This year, would you like to become
involved in that growing project? Even
those who have only a sunny 6' space one
foot wide could grow a small trellis of six
sweet pea plants. We will provide the sweet
pea plants ready to transplant, and even help
with the preparation and trellis if you do not
have a garden! The sweet peas will be ready
to transplant either in the ground or in a
small container garden by the end of
October. Call the church office, or contact
Barry Woodbridge (714 357-2333 or
bwoodbridge@wbridge.com) if you would
like to volunteer or learn more.

Hospitality & Welcome Ministry Team

Hospitality & Welcome Ministry Team

has its first meeting scheduled to plan for
our 2016 year! The date is Wednesday,
October 28 at 6:30 P.M. (before the holidays get
in full swing.) All of those who offered to help
or said YES when I asked, please try to be
there. Bring your ideas and suggestions of
what you think would be a fun event for our
church family. Some of you have offered to
help but said you can't make a meeting, please
call (714-738-7337) or email
(judismedley1@aol.com) with your ideas. It
takes a lot of commitment to plan and execute
a successful year. If you haven't volunteered to
help, please do. We need "DO-ERS" as well as
'PLANNERS' and we would love to have you
join our Hospitality & Welcome Team :)
Hope to see you 28.
Judi

Alternative Gift Faire only two

weeks away

November 1, between 11 A.M. and 2 P.M.

This event is designed to give all of us,
our friends and family an opportunity to make
gifts and/or buy gifts for our personal
Christmas giving that will benefit the needs of
others, many of whom are part of the people
Jesus called the least of these.
Annually, this event has generated
between $12,000 and $15,000 of support for 18
to 20 ministries that have booths on the Plaza.
Thats a lot of money. What you may not know
and be surprised to know, these totals have
been generated by the gifts of some 90 to 100
people. Just think what could be generated to
help others if the number of donors was
increased by 50% or, even better, by 100%!
We invite you to attend the AGF and
spend at least $10 to support one ministry of
your choosing among the ministries that will
be present.
We invite you to ask at least one other
person, a friend, a neighbor, a co-worker, a
family member, someone not connected to our
congregation, to come with you to the AGF on
November 1.
If youd like to help with this years
AGF, give your name either to Jill Scott or
Mary Anne Richmond, our Co-Chairs, who
are getting lots of support from Donna
Woodbridge in planning for this event. If
youd like to help with the set-up and takedown on the day of the event, let Craig
Wallace know youre available to help with
this work and hell add your name to the list of
those who will be doing these two important
tasks on Sunday, November 1.
Craig also is in need of pop-ups. So if
you or someone you know has one and would
be willing to donate it for that day, please
give Craig a call, 714-879-6589.

David Matson Lectures

Tuesday Night Study Series

David Matson Bible Lecture Series Continues This Tuesday Oct. 20
7:00 p.m. in Chapman Lounge
Title: "Preach the Gospel"
During his first two lectures in this series, David Matson has presented a word study using a series of
passages in the Old Testament, in a little-known secular Greek calendar inscription, and in Mark, Luke, and
Matthew where the word "euangelion" (good news, glad tidings, or gospel) occurs.
Why care so much about one little word? We care because everyone somehow thinks she/he knows
what it means, but few can define the exact content it refers to. We care because it's at the heart of our identity
as Christians and as the Disciples of Christ denomination. We care because if we cannot be clear about what it
is we proclaim and call others to embrace, how can we have the unity we seek?
And if we do not gain that clarity, we risk our future dissolving into a social movement based on
generalized feelings about love, peace, and hope, no different than many other non-religious groups.
His challenge to us has been one of "clarity over agreement." First, get very clear about what our own
"Book" meant in using the word "gospel" and then work out our own various responses to that message.
This Week: The "Gospel" in the Writings of Paul
Paul is actually our earliest source for the term "gospel" being used in a distinctly Christian sense.
Actually, the gospel goes back even before him.

Week of Compassion welcomes New Associate Director, beginning

January 1st, 2016.
Caroline is a proud TCU graduate, having studied English, religion, and political
science. She completed an M.Div. at Claremont School of Theology. Her greatest strengths
are in preaching and teaching--equipping people to connect stories of faith to their lives and to translate their
faith into action. She is recognized as a gifted writer and speaker and a creative and critical thinker.
As a
lifelong Disciple, Caroline is familiar with all three expressions of our church. She has been active in Disciples
congregations in the Southwest and Pacific Southwest regions, where she served on congregational and
regional boards. Caroline has also been active serving on the General Board and Administrative Committee. In
addition to her strong Disciples identity, Caroline has ties with our covenanted denomination, the United
Church of Christ, having served a joint Disciples-UCC congregation in California and currently serving at
Newtown Congregational Church, UCC.
Ministry in Newtown provided Caroline a deeper understanding of the lasting effects and complexities
of trauma, having entered the community nearly two years after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary
School. Inspired and informed by her experience there, Caroline hopes to develop ways in which Week of
Compassion can equip Disciples to prepare for and respond to gun violence tragedies.
Caroline looks forward to helping congregations connect to the ministry of Week of Compassion and
collaborating with our ecumenical partners. Caroline is excited to serve the church and the world with Week of
Compassion, and writes, "it is my conviction that we are called to partner with God in the ongoing work of
creation, to speak a word of life into chaos--sometimes with a whisper and sometimes with a defiant shout."
Week of Compassion is one such voice in our world, and we are excited to welcome Caroline's contributions to
this ministry.
