AUSTRIA: Die sterreichische Bundeshymne

National Days: 15 May, 26 October
Before 1946, Austria's national anthem had been the famous Emperor Hymn composed for the
purpose by Joseph Haydn. This tune had been later adopted by Germany. In 1946, after
World War II the Austrian cabinet felt it more appropriate to have a new anthem for their
country. Eventually, a tune thought to be by Mozart was selected. It appears in the last part
of his Little Freemason Cantata (K.483) composed on the 15th November 1791. However,
recent research seems to indicate that the tune was not actually composed by Mozart but
possibly by Michael Haydn or possibly even Johann Holzel.
In symphonic band use, measures 13-20 could be played by woodwind, horns and low brass,
omitting trumpets and trombones, assuming these forces are large enough.
