SOME ; ANY ; NO / NONE
These words are used with uncountable and plural countable nouns.
Some and any are both adjectives and pronouns, no is an adjective and none is a pronoun.
Some is used in affirmative sentences and offers/requests:
(Adj.) There are some apples in the bag.
Would you like some wine?
(Pron.) I need some coins for the phone. - Ive got some.
Wheres the milk? - Theres some in the fridge.
Any is used in interrogative and negative sentences:
(Adj.) Are there any apples in the bag?
Have you got any money?
There arent any apples in the bag.
I havent got any money.
(Pron.) I need some coins for the phone. Have you got any?
Id like some soup. Is there any?
I need some coins, but I havent got any.
Id like some soup, but there isnt any.
No and none are used in negative sentences only (no/none = not any, so the verb is affirmative),
especially as the subject or (none only) in one-word answers:
(Adj.) There are no apples in the bag.
No cars can go into the centre.
Theres no beer in the fridge.
(Pron.) Where are the apples? There are none in the bag.
I looked for the sugar, but there was none.

The words in columns A and B are singular pronouns. The words in column C are often
adverbs and do not usually require a preposition.

a) Compounds of some are used in affirmative sentences (occasionally in interrogative, for


offers, requests, etc.).
Somebody is asking for you.
Theres someone at the door.
I have to tell you something.
I cant find my keys. Im sure they are somewhere in this room.
Would you like something to eat?
Did someone speak?
You look worried. Is there something wrong?
Couldnt we go somewhere else?
b) Compounds of any are used in interrogative sentences or negative sentences with a
negative verb.
Does anyone have any questions?
I didnt see anybody. (= I saw nobody.)
Are you doing anything tonight?
The police looked for clues but they didnt find anything. ( = They found nothing.)
-Did you go anywhere this weekend?
-No, I didnt go anywhere. ( = I went nowhere.)
c) Compounds of no are used in negative sentences with an affirmative verb. You must use a
compound of no for a negative subject or negative one-word answer.
No one came.
Who did you see? - Nobody.
I pressed the button but nothing happened.
Whats the matter? - Nothing.
Where have you been? - Nowhere.
d) Compounds of every can be used in affirmative, interrogative and negative sentences.
Everyone was pleased.
Has everybody given in their homework?
Dont tell everybody about it.
Not everyone can speak a foreign language.
They lost everything in the fire.
I dont remember much. Everything happened so quickly.
Do you understand everything?
I have looked everywhere, but I cant find them.
There were people everywhere.
e) Compounds of some, any and no are sometimes followed by an adjective.
Lets go somewhere quiet.

f) Compounds of some, any and no are sometimes followed by an infinitive.
