Experimental results
In order to obtain the material structural characteristics of XPS
thermal insulation plates, the axial compressive and shear tests
were carried out in the testing Laboratory of Civil and Geodetic
Engineering Faculty at the University of Ljubljana. The axial
compressive tests were performed in accordance to EN 826 and
the shear tests were performed in accordance to EN 12090.
Additionally to monotonic tests, also the cyclic tests were carried
out. The results for the selected specimens for cyclic loading are
presented in Figure 1 (obtained values of axial elastic and shear
modulus and corresponding strengths determined by monotonic
compression and shear tests are also indicated). As can be seen
from the figure the investigated different specimens have shown
very stable cyclic response with very low standard deviations.
Selected results of parametric study of seismic response
The research has shown that in general the seismic safety of
passive houses with the height up to 2 or 3 stories is not of
critical concern. For higher (or slenderer) buildings however, the
negative effects of insulation layer under foundation plate are
more important and can lead to overstress in the thermal
insulation layer itself, or to the increase of stresses and top
displacement of the building. The negative effects are larger for
stiffer buildings, positioned on more flexible insulation layers (in
compression and in shear), and founded in a better soil
conditions (e.g. soil A).
