Just as Albertans ended a 44-year provincial Tory

reign earlier this year, Canadians wavered in their support for the Conservative Party of Canada and painted
the countrys ridings red on Oct. 19. Yet, the same did
not hold true for the Bow River riding, where Conservative candidate Martin Shields was greeted with loud
applause as he threw his hands in the air, accepting
a decisive win that proved once again the constituencys loyalty to their conservative roots.
Shields, who campaigned against six other candidates vying for the chance to represent the Bow River
Riding in Parliament, received 38,631 of the votes on
Monday, resulting in a landslide 77 per cent victory
leaving a large gap between himself and Liberal
candidate William MacDonald Alexander who won 14
per cent and 6,840 votes.
We found very strong support in this riding for
the Conservative Party and it was a team win, said
Shields at the Medicine Hat College campus in Brooks
where supporters gathered to celebrate the outcome.
Im elected to represent the constituency here and
the constituents that are in this riding, no matter how
they voted, Im representing them and will do my
best. Whatever the interest of the people are, to work
with them is what Ill do. No matter the results of the
election Canada-wide.
Mondays results marked the end to a 16-month campaign trail for the 66-year-old, since he announced his
intentions of running for Member of Parliament last
June. Shields was awarded the candidacy in September 2014, beating out three other candidates Rob
Anders, Rolly Ashdown, and Gerard Lucyshyn.
The mayor of the City of Brooks walked into a room
filled with balloons, the infamous moustache-shaped
chocolate cake and fruit, and the cheers of supporters
shortly after 8:30 p.m. following his visit in Strathmore earlier that day.
The third-generation southern Albertan grew up on
a farm in Lethbridge and spent 30 years in the County
of Newell. With 40 years knowledge of the Bow River
riding area, Shields spent 11 years in municipal elected positions, served as president of the Constituent
Party of Canada and sat on the Alberta Municipality
Board.
His vast understanding of the constituencys history
and issues will assist in representing the constituency
on a federal level. While aware of the gas-based oil
resource, and agricultural-based industries, Shields is
most passionate about issues facing water in the area
- partly a result of his six years on the Bow River Basin Council - and held families and property rights at
the forefront of his campaign.

Desperate to find a new artistic medium for the creation of his fathers
Christmas present last year, local artist Clinton DeGagne stumbled across a
newfound talent that not only provided
release for his battle with depression,
but also caught the attention of the
Strathmore Municipal Library in the
nick of time for Halloween.
Until the end of the month, the top
of the library shelves will be lined with
DeGagnes Pyrography pieces the art
of decorating wood by burning a design
onto the surface using a heated metallic point.
The local artist experimented with the
wood burning technique when he felt
painting and sketching art for his father
was no longer distinctive. In an ironic
twist, the wood burning kit that his father had given him as a child was used
to create the dragon depicted on the
wooden canvass his father unwrapped
last year.
Since then, the 29-year-old has won
four First Place ribbons and two Peoples Choice ribbons at the Strathmore
Stampedes Art and Horticulture show,
created custom pieces, and specifically
burned the images of Wolfman, Gollum,
and Jack Sparrow on wood for his exhibit at the library.
When I was a kid my dad had bought
me a wood burning kit but I didnt understand it, it didnt make any sense to
me, said DeGagne. Its a lot harder because you cant erase your mistakes. Its
burned in, its done. So, I thought lets

try it out, and it just kind of flourished
from there.
The Strathmore-based father grew
up with four siblings surrounded by
sketching, needlepoint, and music. After
moving here to work in oil and gas, he
was laid off for a year and began exploring other avenues to make more money.
While he splits his talent which he referred to as a hobby with his job at
the City of Calgary where he works for
Youth and Recreation, DeGagne hopes
his creativity will turn into a small business.
While the library is known for exhibiting the works of local artists, his
distinctive work is unparalleled in the
librarys recent history.
Because its October and its Halloween and pyrography works great
for some of these wonderful ghoulish
types of figures that he can create, it
just worked really wonderful for this
display, said Carmen Erison, assistant
director of library services. What really impressed me about Clinton is how
hard he worked to create specific pieces
for us, for October for our display. In
the five years that Ive been here weve
never displayed this type work. I think
Clinton brings a very unique style to the
library.
DeGagne grew up playing the clarinet, trumpet, base guitar, and more
recently the acoustic guitar. Having
sketched from a young age, and recently trying his hand at photography,
he hopes to provide a similar upbringing for his infant daughter. Yet, his pas-

from depression, art always provided a
means of expression for DeGagne, who
finishes one canvas in two hours.
Ive just always been very artistic so
its just an outlet for when Im feeling
down, its where I get lost and my go
to, he said. Its always been a release
for me to help battle that depression.
Music and art really help me forget
about whats troubling me and give
me a calm-down moment. If Im really
down I pick up the guitar and play for
ten minutes. Its like I play my worries
away.
DeGagnes pieces range from $30 to
$70 and will be displayed until Oct. 31.

Together with a good understanding
of infrastructure costs in the municipalities, his political resume, which also
includes participation in a number of
policy conferences and involvement on
policy committees provincially as well
as federally, his daughter, Kari Tarasoff,
who celebrated with Shields in Brooks,
expects the transition into federal politics to come naturally.
Shields will make up part of the official opposition, who received 99 seats
and 29 per cent of the vote countrywide, affording the Liberal Party of
Canada a majority with 184 seats at 54
per cent of the vote, and preventing former Prime Minister Harpers ambitions
of seeking a fourth mandate.
The federal results indicated a remarkable political comeback for the
Grits, who four years ago came in third
place with only 34 seats at the 2011
election.
While many supporters felt confident
about the local outcome, some were
stunned by the federal results.
I feel very happy here but the Liberal
majority surprised me, and I wouldnt
have been surprised with a Liberal minority, but the voters have spoken and
you go forward, said Karen Bartsch,
who has known Shields since 1985 and
sat with him on the Bow River Basin
Council.
Hes so tied to this community and
really believes in this community that I
think thats one of the reasons some of
us got behind him, because we know
hell be down there fighting for our issues. Im not saying the rest of the people dont, but he knows how to get in
there and get his voice heard.
Also visibly noticeable among the
crowd was Newell County Reeve Molly
Douglass, a volunteer and supporter
throughout the campaign. Emphasizing
Shields leadership skills, his devotion
to public service, and clear focus, Douglass spoke highly of his ability to serve
in Parliament.
The Bow River riding was re-established by the 2012 federal electoral
boundaries redistribution changes
that resulted in six additional Alberta
seats to the House of Commons. As
former representative of the area Kev-

break and enter to a vehicle that
occurred on October 2nd.
At approximately 11pm, an
individual was seen on camera at
the Ford dealership.
The suspect attempted to enter
a vehicle but was unsuccessful.

honour to be elected and represent the
people in this new riding.
Shields acknowledged all other elected officials and commended the other
six candidates on their participation in

a new perspective

The Strathmore High School production of New Blood gave SHS students
from the high school, Glee and Blackfoot dance classes an inspirational history lesson about Chief Vincent Yellow
Old Womans journey through residential schools to become chief of his people.
SHS drama teacher Deanne Bertsch
thought the students took the production by storm in acting out a powerful persons legacy through literature,
poetry, musical and traditional musical
practices.
The kids have done really well, said
Bertsch. They learned the choreography really quickly in a month to get
these first few shows up. Im proud of
them that way and the audience is still
responding positively and seems to be
moved by the performance of the story.
And thats what were really hoping for.
The play provided many First Nations
students in the play a better understanding of what their families went through
at residential schools.
The story is about Chief Vincent Yellow Old Woman, the present chief of
Siksika Nation, said Bertsch Its his
personal story but its also the story of
so many of the students grandparents.
They have connections to it in some
way. Its giving the First Nations students
definitely a greater understanding of

cast about their own stories left an impression.
Its just amazing seeing the response
from the audience, she said. And hearing the stories from the people that see
it. We took it down to the blood reserve
a couple of weeks ago and 10 different
people stood up after the show and told
us about their stories and how they connected.
For Savanna Sparvier, getting involved
with the production was an inspirational decision as it has impacted her on a
family level.
Its a very broadening experience,
said Sparvier. Essentially, at a young
age I had my grandmother, she would
tell me all these stories about what happened to her in residential school. Thats
what drove me to be in this. Her stories
have made a big impact on my life before this started. I guess being in this
play has been a way for me to keep her
close to my heart.
According to Sparvier, the performance also helped her gain confidence
in explaining the performance to the
best of her ability to other people.
The show started on Oct. 13 and ran
one last time on Oct. 20.

Cecilia Madsens paternal grandfather Niels Peter Madsen and family which included her father
Charles, arrived in Standard from Denmark on July
1, 1920.
Her maternal grandparents, the Reiffensteins,
were married in Denmark, traveled to Iowa on
their honeymoon and never went back. Cecs mother Esther was born in 1912, the second
youngest of 13 children, all born in
Iowa but moved to the Standard area in
1916. Charles and Esther were married
on Aug. 2, 1934, in the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Standard.
Cecilia was born in Calgary in 1938,
the eldest of four children, and lived in
Standard through age four.
In 1942, when her father became a
grain buyer for Alberta Pacific Grain at
Iddesleigh, Alta. the family moved. The
following year they moved to Chancellor, following her fathers transfer. By this time Cecilia was eligible to go to school, but as she was to
be the only student in Grade 1, the school superintendent arranged for her to take a crash course
in Grade 1 subjects between April and June. This
way, when she returned to school in the fall, she
could join other Grade 2 students. In March 1948,
the family rented a farm south and east of Standard, where they stayed for a year. This was the
only time in her life that Cecilia traveled to school
on a school bus, and it was around this time that
her classmates changed her name from Cecilia to
Celia, and a short time later to Cec.
In 1949, her father Charles and friend Sigurd
Nielsen bought the former JP Hansen General store
(built in 1912), and it became the Nielsen and Madsen General Store. This was a two-story building
with an outside staircase, and Eastern Star and Masonic Lodge monthly meetings were held upstairs.
It was sold to Standard Co-op in 1974, and moved
to Heritage Park in 1976 as a Heritage Building,

and is now used as the bakery. Dad was still alive
when this happened, and was he ever proud! He
passed away in January 1982, at the age of 74.
Cec graduated from Standard School in 1955, and
following an eight-month teacher training course
taught school for two years, and after meeting her
future husband at a dance in 1956, married Jim
Watt of Rosebud in 1958. This marriage produced
five children, 13 grandchildren and one great
grand-daughter.
Jim worked on the rigs for several
years, while Cec became a substituteteacher in Standard. During this time,
Jim worked at the gas plant east of
Chancellor until 1991, when he retired. Jim was a very active participant
in sports, and in particular hockey and
baseball. Jim played baseball all his life,
following in his fathers footsteps along
with many other family members, and
in the winter months played Old Timer
Hockey within Wheatland County. Sadly, Jim passed away from ALS in 2003.
Their community activities include Cec being a
59-year member of The Order of The Eastern Star,
member of Nazareth Lutheran Church, a current
member of Standard Seniors, and a past member
of Standard Lionettes. Jim was a member of the
Standard Lions Club, the Masonic Lodge and the
Fire Department.
There have been many changes in and around
Standard since Cec was born, for example the
population increase, fresh water being piped into
town, all the new houses being built, and the roads
throughout town being paved, acreages replacing
farm land. Nowadays, senior citizens and other
residents have better access to Health Care in both
Strathmore and Drumheller, although they still
have to provide their own transport.
Cec is proud to state that she has lived all but
three years within a 10-mile radius of Standard. Life
has been great!

A mix of parental care and
tough tech tips will keep your
teens safer around their tech devices.
An iPhone is not a rite of passage, it is a privilege. There are
rules and if they dont abide by
them, take the phone away until they can earn it back, said
Paul Davis, an IT tech and a social networking safety consultant
for www.socialnetworkingsafety.
net, who has been interviewed
by major networks and works
with law enforcement and security agencies across Canada.
In a lecture sponsored by the
Youth Club held at the Strathmore High School theatre in
September, Davis explained
things parents should consider
when they give their children
tech devices. There are positives
for their use; however safety,
protocols must be implemented
to protect their children.
Children may talk parents into
giving them a phone as a safety concern, so they can contact
help if they need it, but analysis shows that the majority of
phones are not used only for
that purpose. The average high
school sees about 4,000 texts
exchanged between students
per month. He said along with
texts and chats with family and
friends bullying, posting of
sexual pictures, sexting and
viewing pornography are all activities occurring on teen phones
and laptops.
He said many teens believe
that deleted information, or pictures posted on sites like Snapchat are gone. Not so. All information deleted is relabeled and
stored elsewhere on the device
and with the right software, it
can be recovered.
The whole notion of disappearing images is a lie, said
Davis. First rule, no tech in the
bedroom.
He said that as well as doing
their homework, they may explore and engage in forbidden
activity, as teens are naturally curious. His work with the RCMP
indicates 90 per cent of the tech
abuse comes through bedroom
access, when parents are absent
or busy, with the child or teen
thinking no one knows what
they are doing. He said predators
can sometimes fool children, by
making up false Facebook pages

to lure them into unacceptable
behaviour, with the child or teen
thinking they are sharing secrets
with someone their own age.
Photos of anyone under 18 engaged in explicit sexual activity,
or where the picture shows sexual organs, breasts or the anal
region is considered child pornography. For an understanding of how a teen photo leads

Davis said protection isnt only
installing parental locks or special software on their devices,
but more importantly children
and teens need more face-to-face
parental time and supervision.
There are better ways to
monitor your kids social media
habits than spying on your kids,
said Davis. Its about parenting.
He said the first step is developing a relationship and developing ways children and teens
can talk to their parents. Discussions, on values and issues like
relationships, love and respect
for others, as well as the concept
of actions and consequences to
themselves and other people, are
essential. Discuss the concept of
honouring their bodies and not
giving into peer pressure for explicit pictures or talk. They need
to feel secure that they can come
to their parents when they encounter trouble and talk about
new friends met on the internet.
Kids that are okay will come
to their parents, but others who
may want to wont ... because
they dont want their actions to
be found out, said Davis.
Davis said parents also need
to look at their own tech behaviours. He suggests disposing of
the adult video games that dont
support positive values. Some
games support rape, shooting
police, and excess violence. To
know the content on games children and teens are playing, look
at www.ersb.org and type the
game name in the search space.
If you play those types of
games, think about what that is
teaching your child, said Davis.
Research shows violent and
sexually explicit video games
can increase violent behaviour
and decrease empathy in users.
Davis said parents who play the
games can expect their children
to be curious about them and
take away the message that the
concepts portrayed in the game

are acceptable.
Davis said parents arent often
knowledgeable about the technology and the software their
children are using. He suggested
there are courses that parents
can take, such as Apple teaching sessions that could help with
understanding the capabilities
and safety mechanisms of their
devices.
He suggested parental oversight when tech devices are being used. Be in the vicinity when
kids are using their tech and
watch what sites they are using.
Sometimes teens will use online
lingo such as AITR (Adult in the
room) or NIFOC (naked in front
of computer) to disguise their
information. Definitions for acronyms can be found at www.
netlingo.com
He said some families even
check their media at the front
door, so they are not distracted,
and it establishes and environment that encourages interaction
with each other.
Some parents draw up a contract with their children, negotiating consequences and rewards
for
inappropriate/appropriate
use.
Parents also need to consider
the legal ramifications of their
childrens actions used on tech
they have contracted for their
use.
You have signed a contract
for it. It is your legal entity, said
Davis.
Daviss lecture was a treasure
trove of information that the average lay person may not know.
He followed the lecture with a
question and answer session
and provided the purchase details for a complete information
download on safety tips for all
types of internet use to interested audience members.

Crowfoot 4-H Multi Club

I hope everyone had a great summer. It is that
time again to think about joining the greatest youth
group ... 4-H!
Crowfoots first meeting was on Monday, Oct. 5
at the Crowfoot Hall. We had registration and voted
in Shelly Neal and Dallas Stickel as the co-leaders
of the club.
The club is having archery with John Biskup as
the leader and Marshall Biskup is going to be the
junior leader, the sewing project is being lead by

Dallas Stickel and there will be two C.O.P. one is
crafts and the other is active living Fitbit Challenge lead by Fern Pagenkopf.
The Crowfoot 4-H Multi Club will be having its
annual welcome back Bowlerama
on Nov. 23 (6 p.m.) in Drumheller.
Our next meeting will be on Nov. 2 and the new
meeting time is at 7 p.m. For those who would like
to, there is still time to join. If you want to join

The dirt on chores

Fule for Thought
Ive come to hate the word chores. On any given weekend, we all face them. Just when you think
youve got the laziest of Saturdays planned, your
wife casually mentions that word.
We have very high ceilings in our new house, and
we were so impressed looking up at all the pot lights
shining down. I mustve been in a kind of rosy buyers trance looking up, because I never once thought
about how Id have to climb Everest one stupid pot
light at a time, to change those stupid things!
This time, Im getting smart were using LED
lights, so theyll hopefully last longer. Yeah, its like
Im facing that whole Christmas light thing all over
again. Those have to go up soon too, so Im planning
to bribe my daughters boyfriend with whiskey for
those! Dont worry I wont let him climb impaired!
Ive noticed that with all of lifes chores, we as a
society find easier ways to attack them. In fact, the
Fules are on their second Roomba (a robot vacuum
cleaner). However, Debbie does force me to use the
stupid old fashioned one that involves work. Even
then, I find ways to avoid effort if I can. For example,
theres always that one stupid hair clip or paper clip
that will not be sucked up. Rather than bend over
to pick it up, I find myself going over and over it
with the floor brush, praying that it will suck up just
once! But oh no, eventually I have to give in, bend
over (head rush) and pick it up. Now thats a chore!
We even named our Roomba Jarvis because Ive
always wanted my own British butler, and well
that sounded British.
Having been raised Catholic, Ive always found
that Im confessing a lot. I cant keep secrets well,
and Im usually not able to lie well. And so today, Im
going to tell you a small secret about my approach to
chores. You know those days when the dishwasher
is full of clean dishes, and you dont have the desire or interest to empty and put stuff away? Well, if
youre like me, you let a small stack of dirty things
pile near the sink, instead of emptying and re-loading the dishwasher. In fact, I wind up finding a clean
plate or bowl from the dishwasher, and then pile it
next to the sink! This is not a popular thing to do
with Deb around, but theres a second part to the
plan. Now guys, if youre pressed for time, or the big

game is on, heres what I do. You take those dirty
dishes, put them back in the dishwasher with the
clean ones, and voila! The dishwasher can be run
again, the dishes cleaned, and youre safe from the
wrath of the wife!
I mean, when you think about it, youre actually
helping your wife. Not only will the dirty dishes get
cleaned, but those other ones will be double clean! I
think its a win-win! Just dont rat me out to Debbie!
One chore I dont do is dusting. Deb has taken on
that job, but its not like I never help with that. Why,
when Im vacuuming, if I notice an end table is a bit
dusty, Ill whip off a sock and quickly give that table
a quick wipe! In fact, if you want a cleaner sweep,
just take the doily (Im sad that I even know that
word) and use it to wipe away the dust! Then you
simply replace that same doily in the newly dusted
spot and you have helped your wife again youre
welcome Deb!
Ive been asked to mention the bird cage chore
again. Years ago, Deb had two budgies named for
beer. Yep, Bud and Pil were cute little birds, but
squawky. Once when she had gone camping, she
asked me to bird sit. If youve ever had birds before,
they crap a lot! I wasnt very interested in pulling
out the bottom poo-covered sheet, so I hit on a great
idea. Grabbing my parents vacuum, I fired that baby
up and began sucking the disgusting combination of
bird crap and bird seed! It did not dawn on me that
this may not have been a bird-friendly decision. As
the vacuum roared to its high pitched life, the birds
huddled, shivering and screeching in the corner of
their cage feathers flying everywhere! Apparently,
they did not enjoy my time saving idea! Luckily, their
feathers smoothed out by Debs return.
So guys, feel free to use any or all of my time-saving chore ideas. You do need to be pretty quiet about
it I mean, I wouldnt write a column about it or
anything! Luckily Deb doesnt read my column
(Fule for Thought is a slice of life humourous column that appears in the Strathmore Times, written

Last year, the fundraising
banquet raised just under
$150,000, making up a large
chunk of the non-profit organizations $1 million budget,
which is completely comprised of donations.
But as the economy struggles and society is feeling
the impact, the centre remains optimistic for a strong
financial boost and ongoing
support.
Weve been doing this for
so many years that youre always concerned, but were
not worried, said Jill Kulhawy, communication director with the Calgary Pregnancy Care Centre. Weve
had a really good response
to the banquet. When everyone is going through difficult issues financially, so are
our clients and theyre aware
of that and people step up
to the plate. Some people
arent able to give as much
this year but other people
will take their place. Theres
always a concern but we
have lots of people that really believe in what we do
and help us through these
difficult times.
For the past 30 years, individuals, churches, and
business contributions aided
in funding the operation of
three centres two Calgary
centres and one in Strathmore - that attract roughly 800 new clients a year.
While still in its infancy,
the one-and-a-half-year-old
Strathmore Pregnancy Care
Centre, which is funded entirely through the various
fundraising efforts, expects
to have greater involvement
in raising funds next year.
Hopefully next year or
even in the spring, weve
been talking about maybe
doing a banquet out here
to bring more attention to
the Strathmore Centre, said
Jennifer Page, program coordinator for the Strathmore
Pregnancy Care Centre.
Those details are still in
the works. We hope that

through stories, through
people talking to each other, if its volunteer or staff
members, if they feel drawn
to donate, we dont ask for
a specific number, its just
whatever people would like
to donate at this time.
Since 1985, the non-profit
agency has provided assistance to those facing abortion, adoption or parenting.
While the banquet is the organizations largest fundraising event, numerous efforts
were present throughout the
year including the Baby
Bottle Campaign that raised
$135,000 this year alone. A
new banquet, A Date with
Dignity, will also come to
fruition in the spring to ensure the centres future success.
It just takes a while for
people to understand us, hear
about us, and learn to trust
us, Kulhawy said. Some of
these clients have been coming to see us for years, because we dont just believe
in helping them throughout
the pregnancy, but also as
theyre raising their children
and moving onwards. They
become friends and build relationships.
The fundraising banquet
is free to attend and will involve a dinner, live music,
speeches from two clients,
volunteers, donors, and the
executive director. The banquet will be held on Oct. 29
at the Red and White Club in
Calgary at 7 p.m. For more

Car seat recycling offered in Strathmore

A former Strathmore resident is introducing her forward-thinking car-seatrecycling company to her hometown by
partnering up with H&H Huxted Enterprises, therefore providing the community with another recycling opportunity,
keeping thousands of seats out of the
landfills, and slowly inching closer to
having legislation in the future.
Melanie Risdon-Betcher launched
Kidseat Recyclers Inc., the only car seat
recycling company in Canada, just over
five years ago in Calgary. Now averaging between 60 to 100 seats a month
for a total of 4,422 since its conception,
the small-scale company experienced
increases in item drop-offs and hosted
events. Through its efforts, the company
has already diverted 30,954 lbs of plastic and metal from the landfills.
However, in partnering up with Huxted as a drop-off location, Kidseat Recyclers is expanding into Strathmore, with
the hope that one day legislation will
include a recycling levy in the purchase
price of the safety devices.
Were very far from an efficient recycling program for car seats specifically, and it would be nice to sort of
get it into the same logistical flow as
say recycling tires, said Risdon-Betcher.
I run this business part time and I really have not had the time to do the leg
work involved in finding funding and
grants. Eventually we would like to get
some form of support like other recycling initiatives, and potentially lessen
hat levy or do away with it all together.
Thats the goal to eventually get there. It

would require getting some legislation
in place but were just not there yet.
Citizens are currently charged a $10
levy of which $4.20 is used for charges
to transport seats to their facility and
strip them, $3 towards administration,
insurance, and website maintenance of
Kidseat Recyclers, and $2.80 to pick up
and transport seats from drop off locations.
On average, one child will require a
minimum of three such devices bucket, toddler, and booster seat. According
to a recent census, 848 children under
the age of 10 currently live in Strathmore.
For Christine Huxted, who is in
charge of marketing at the recycle yard,
the passion to partner with the initiative
stemmed from her recent experiences
as a new mom.
Its just another thing, with a new
mom and lots of small kids in our group
of friends and family, realizing how
many car seats one kid goes through
and that those all end up in the landfills, she said. Its just finding another
thing we can pull out of our landfill. I
see how many do come in and know
that they just go to the landfill and pile
up.
Transport Canada states, depending
on the manufacturer, a car seat expiration ranges from six to 10 years. Because the plastic is affected by the hot
and cold temperatures of the seasons,
once past its expiration date, the plastic of a safety device may not be turned
into a safety device again. This is due
to the breaking down and molding of
the plastic affecting the predictability of

the material and allowing it to become
more brittle.
A safety device once recycled will always be a lesser product, said RidsonBetcher. Theyre huge, theyre big, its
a lot of plastic and quite a bit of metal
that will take thousands and thousands
of years to degrade in a landfill. Plus
its an oil by-product, so technically that
will be leaching into wherever its decomposing for the next however many
years. Its a pollutant at the end of its
life.
Residents are asked to strip the material off the seats before dropping them
off at the appropriate locations, and will
need to pay the $10 levy fee.
The public is now able to drop off
their used or expired car seats at the
H&H Huxted recycle yard.

Mortgages versus credit cards are you at your limit?

3 per cent, the savings can be huge and the impact to your life can be substantial in two key ways. First your going to save
money in what you pay in interest. The second and most commonly overlooked piece to this is that
you will reduce your overall payments as well. So not only will you be saving money you will free
up more cash which you can use in any number of ways including paying off your mortgage faster.
Do yourself a favour, review your credit card statements. Go back as far as you have to to the first
month when you started carrying a balance over zero. If that was more than three months ago or
your credit card is at its limit, give me a call youll be glad you did.

The Strathmore Regional
Arts Collective (SRAC) societys annual general meeting
on Oct. 13 proved a doubleedged sword for the seven
board members, when they
unanimously agreed in favour of the societys dissolution.
The decision came shortly
after five out of the seven
board members resigned,
and with only seven community members in attendance,
lacked the necessary individuals taking action to keep
the collective going.
It was way too much work
for way too few people, because of that, I think we
were just not getting done
what we had set out to do,
said Brandy Hebbes, Chair
of SRAC and the president
of the Wheatland Society of

Arts.
I believe we played a pretty big role in forwarding arts
awareness in the community and the region. The few
of us that deeply cared just
valiantly kept struggling to
keep it going. At some point
you hit the balance point and
it either goes or you make
the other decision. Sadly this
was the way the teeter-totter
tipped.
Three years ago, the collective was first introduced
into the community as a notfor-profit umbrella company
that, among other things,
set out to connect all of the
art groups in the existing
art community and support
and promote each other. As
part of the original feasibility study completed by RC
Strategies, the society also
worked towards the creation

The best way to catch S.R.C. is very simple try:

Reduce reuse recycle compost. In that order!
Use reusable water bottles, coffee cups and grocery bags
Carpool or ride a bike
Buy in bulk, and shop local
Be aware of what your buying, is this packaging recyclable?
Can I compost the left overs?
Encourage producers to use less packaging and be sure what they do use
isnt a product that goes to landfill
If youre having any construction done, make sure contractors have a
recycling policy. Construction waste management plans should be at
least 50% (recycling and salvage)
Dont dispose of items others may reuse,
Encourage restaurants to use compostable wrapping and containers
Encourage convenience stores to install water refill stations
Use bulk and not single use
Did you know the Recycle Center now takes wood, shingles and drywall
for a small processing charge
There are many more ways of reducing waste and becoming
sustainable! It is as easy as turning off a light, I hope
everyone catches S.R.C.

While the society managed to raise
awareness for the arts, connect artists
with opportunities, create galleries,
produced a mural for the Strathmore
55 Plus Alberta Summer games, created the Canada Day art, and celebrated
their third annual Arts and Sounds festival, a demanding workload and a lack
of traction for the societys ambitious
aspirations contributed to the heavyhearted decision last week.
Battling mixed feelings of sadness
and relief, Hebbes hopes their efforts
will pave the way for new approaches
and an increase in town involvement.
With a new community-based art installation policy on the horizon, members were adamant that the arts continue gaining strength through other
initiatives within Strathmore.
It wasnt a case of giving up, it was
a well this isnt doing what we want
it to do, so lets try a different way,
said Councillor Denise Peterson, who
represented the Town of Strathmore on
the committee.
My hope is that the major art societies in our community will form an
executive committee and that they will
act in an advisory capacity to the town
and continue the work of SRAC. They
did a really good job of gathering data
on all the home-based artists in this
community and surrounding and I
think that youll see the presence continue. I do really believe, and Im really
hopeful, that it will evolve into what
they had initially intended.
Strathmore is home to various art
organizations, such as the Youth Club,
Strathmore Musical Arts Society, Strathmore Theatre Players Guild, and the
Hope Bridges Society.
The arts are not dead, this is not the
end, said Wanda Reinholdt, vice-chair
of SRAC.
The arts collective was a step. We
tried it and it didnt work like we
thought it would, so now we have to
try something else.
The Strathmore Regional Arts Collective will officially dissolve on Nov. 30.

Blind-sided and left in the dark by a
letter suggesting the discontinuation of
external funds to existing community
programs, numerous non-profit organizations are experiencing a twofold blow
and tightening of purse strings thats already contributing to program closures
in the near future.
Last month, the Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) in Alberta received a healthy cash injection
of an additional $10 million across the
province for total funding of $86 million. While the funds are provided to
help strengthen communities, FCSS informed their recipients on Sept. 15 that
the funding provided previously will no
longer continue except to support new
initiatives.
Although the partnership made up
between Strathmore and the province
of Alberta sent a letter to the local
community programs in 2013 notifying them to seek alternative revenue
sources for the future, many non-prof-
it organizations said they had no prelude to the announcement. And as the

economy struggles, those community
programs are also losing funding from
other sources.
Im disappointed because right now
it is tough getting funding for non-profits and its getting tougher and tougher,
said Wanda Reinholdt, program coordinator at Hope Bridges Society, who
in the past received $1,000 from FCSS,
and will also not be receiving any of the
40 per cent or $30,000 - government
funds.
Were a growing province, with growing needs, and a growing population
and theres so many factors preventing
funding from being available. When the
oil sector struggles, all the grant money
where does it come from? It comes from
there, so everything suffers.
The letter states that while Strathmore
FCSS will not be providing funding to
community programs, it will provide
internal programming to help increase
and promote new programs and initiatives to our community.

money isnt being poured into existing
thriving programs with a strong clientele. No mention has yet been made as
to the possible new programs or initiatives vying to grab the cash.
As the surge in funding translates to
an additional $18,000 in Strathmore, the
Wheatland FCSS believes the money
should support those programs already
in place.
Additional funding was handed out
to all the FCSSs per capita, and so were
jumping on board with that opportunity
so we have more dollars to spend with
on programs, said Lynn Walker, program coordinator for WFCSS.
All the non-profits rely on grant dollars so one backing out really does
create a whole different scenario for
programs involved. We struggle at times
and we know exactly how everybody
else struggles.
As a result the Growing Families Society said all three of their initiatives will
be affected Five for Life, Bridging the
Gap, and the Life Skills program. Without FCSSs $8,500 contributions, which
covers all three areas, the organization
estimates six programs within those
three initiatives will not receive support;
including the Bridging the Gap lunch
club. None of their programs within
Wheatland County will be affected.
However, FCSS funding isnt the only
hit on the societys budget. Large financial contributions from W. Brett Wilson
have also come to an end, and no information has yet been received regarding
United Way funding.
What are they doing with the infusion money that was announced this
past month? Because you have to spend
that by Dec. 31, said May RosteckiBudzey, executive manager with the
Growing Family Society, who said only
one-quarter of the money can be carried forward to a future year.
I dont care if you dont select my
program, but at the end result be sure
that the money is being driven to those
individuals that are in need of some
support.
While the Strathmore FCSS was unable to comment at this time, the letter
also stated that they will continue with
the Special Project Funding for community projects that meet the FCSS mandate. For now, local non-profit organizations are adjusting their programming
to meet their budgets and are actively
looking for other sources of funding.

Vision problems can affect a childs learning and development

October is Childrens Vision Month, and Alberta teachers and
doctors of optometry are encouraging parents to get their childrens eyes checked. How well a child performs in school is
directly linked to how well they see. Yet, a recent survey commissioned by the Alberta Association of Optometrists (AAO) revealed that only 61 per cent of Albertans know that school-age
children should have annual eye exams.
That is a troubling statistic. Many problems that are caused
by poor eyesight can be completely avoided, says Strathmore
optometrist, Dr. Chris Johnson. During a comprehensive eye
exam, we often find vision or eye health concerns that parents,
and even the children themselves, didnt know existed.
When a child is having vision problems, everything is more
difficult reading, seeing the board and even playing sports.
The problem is, most children dont recognize that they are
having a hard time seeing they assume everyone sees the way
they do. The undetected problem may continue to get worse,
resulting in stress, frustration, and sometimes, serious behavioural issues.
Its absolutely incredible to see the changes for a student
when they have a vision problem corrected, says Mark Ramsankar, president of the Alberta Teachers Association. Some stu-
dents dont realize or cant say that theres an issue with their
sight and sometimes we can fix reading or behaviour issues just
by correcting a vision problem. It all starts with regular testing.
Many schools and family physicians offer vision screening
programs, which will reveal whether a child has 20/20 vision.
Studies show that vision screening has high error rates. In
fact, 43 per cent of children with vision problems pass a vision screening. Dr. Johnson says comprehensive eye exams go
much further.
While a 20/20 vision score is great, it does not mean that
your child has all of the vision skills required for optimal learning and development, says Dr. Johnson. Your optometrist can
do a lot more than determine if a child sees well. We diagnose,
treat and prevent diseases and disorders affecting the eyes and
visual systems.
Alberta Health Care covers the cost of annual eye exams for
children until they turn 19. Regular checkups are important, because a childs vision and eye health will likely change as they
grow and develop. Optometrists recommend children have
their first comprehensive eye exam between the ages of six and
nine months, their second between the ages of two and five,
and one every year after that.

For the first time in recent history, all Strathmore Badgers Community Football teams will be heading to the
post-season in the coming weeks.
Peewee head coach Clinton Bean was excited for his
groups when describing his teams 66-18 win over the
Red Deer Hornets.
Ecstatic, said Bean. We came out here today to
have fun. It was a beautiful October day and the kids
responded. They had a great day and scored a few too
many touchdowns. I was trying to call some plays and
they were still in the end zone.
Bean saw a lot of positive signs on both sides of the
ball as the offensive and defensive side of the ball improved.
The bantams, on the other hand, finished the season
undefeated at 5-0, winning 37-19 over a much bigger
and physical Innisfail team.
Coach Sean Seafoot thinks this was a game his team
needed in order to get ready for the playoffs in two
weeks time.
They had short numbers as well but they had some
big boys that played both sides on their team, said Seafoot. Perseverance was key in this game for sure. We
had lots of injuries and guys stepping up. Our defensive

end played some offensive line. It was tough, we had to

toss guys around. They had big boys, we couldnt run up
the middle on them at all.
In order to move the ball around more, the team
moved the ball to the outside more and used their passing game effectively.
Seafoot thinks to stay sharp for playoffs, theyll have to
keep improving their games to the next level and stay focused for 60 minutes and learn from the Innisfail game.
The old saying you save the best for last, seemed to
work for the senior Badgers as they won their last game
of the season 59-50 over the Crossfield/Carstairs Tigers.
The victory was a reason to celebrate as it offered the
team a spot in the playoffs.
From a coachs point of view, we really needed guys to
come out and dedicate their time, said head coach Brad
Middlemiss. Once they started dedicating their time it
shows in their abilities. Once they came out learned how
to play football it showed. It was good for everyone to
come out and pull off the win.
Middlemiss added that the key to the win was his offense having an outstanding game.
Im just happy for these guys, they really deserved
it, he said.
Their playoff opponent will be Innisfail on Oct. 24 at
2:30 p.m. Until then, Middlemiss and the team will get
back on the practice field and work on their defense.

With a playoff berth on the line in their
last home game, the Strathmore Spartans
high school football team were on the losing end of a 26-0 defeat on Oct. 16 to the
Medicine Hat Mohawks, that marked the
end of the season.
Youve got to give Medicine Hat some
credit about the way they were playing
and blitzing our line pretty good, said assistant coach Stacy Doore. The boys just
got a little overwhelmed. The coaches
were making the right plays. Medicine Hat
came prepared and they were covering
man-to-man with us.
He felt the Mohawks way of kicking the
ball set the tone for the game and may
have been the dagger in the Spartans
hopes.
However, the season proved positive in
various ways for the high school-only program in its first year.
With the up-and-coming boys we have
in our program, its going to progressively
get better, said Doore. The boys know
the coaching is there. We just need to step
it up again next year. We have great expectations, were going to lose some of our
Grade 12s that are starters.
The positives include the teams efforts
to come together and a perfect attendance
by all 36 players giving in their best effort.
Doore mentioned that teamwork and
communication will be an area that will
need to be addressed for next season.

some areas of growth Ive observed in our community. Ive seen
significant expressions of generosity, care, and concern expressed

donated. In the spirit of family and
Thanksgiving, Ive seen the lines of
family blurred to hospitably include
and adopt those without family into
significant times of celebration,
encouragement and fun. Ive also

The Wheatland Kings performance from one
weekend to the next is as different as night and
day.
After going 0-3 the previous week, the local
junior-B team defeated the Stettler Lightning 5-4
on the road on Oct. 17, before letting a 2-0 lead
slip the following night in a 4-2 loss to Red Deer
on home ice.
Kings forward Jay Manning thought the loss
was a tough one to swallow, but said its a matter
of the team bearing down on their chances to put
teams away.
We kind of let up in the third and they advanced on us, said Manning. I mean we got to
learn from our mistakes and put that one behind
us. Well come out next game and play better,
more stronger.
Manning thought they had a strong start to
the game but felt they got too confident with the
lead, where the Vipers were able to capitalize on
their opportunities.
Coach Emilio Fouco did not fault the teams

compete level in the two games but said its just
a matter of knowing how to finish games when
having the lead.
We played fairly well, said Fouco. We have
a team thats young and gelling and just needs
to learn how to win those games. It was really a
point of we didnt take advantage of all our opportunities and they buried theirs.
Fouco added that the game in Stettler was a
case of just sticking with it and working hard
while taking advantage of opportunities that the
Lightning gave them.
Chris Williams scored two goals to lead the
way, while Jacen Bracko, Brooker Pretty Youngman and Lucas Jones sniped one each in the win.

scored in the loss to the Vipers.
The Kings will play three games in three days
this weekend, beginning in Medicine Hat on Oct.
23 at 8:15 p.m.
They will host Mountainview on Oct. 24 (8
p.m.), and wrap up the weekend in Airdrie on
Oct. 25 (3 p.m.).

The CFR Bisons learned a
valuable lesson during their
games over the weekend; tighten up and limit the oppositions
chances.
The team was able to bear
down and prevent the opposition from gaining extra space
on the ice en route to a 3-3 tie
at home versus CAC on Oct. 16
and a 4-1 win in Medicine Hat
the following day.
Today we got out of the first
period with a tie and yesterday
as well, said Henry, in regards
to the game in Medicine Hat. I
think that part was good and we
managed to score first in both
games which always helps you
out even though a new problem
arose where wed score a goal,
theyd score one right after.
After that happened the first
time, we talked about it and
asked that if we scored a goal

that in the next several shifts to
be a little more solid and have
more of a focus on being defensively solid versus trying to keep
pushing. And that seemed to be
how we were giving them up.
The team was caught in the
offensive end numerous times
throughout the night while giving up odd man rushes against
CAC. According to Henry, that
will be need to be polished on
both sides of the puck.
Ultimately, the defensemen
have some responsibility in that
and also I didnt think the back
pressure from our forwards was
really good, he said. The defensemen were kind of left to
what they could and outmanned
at times. They made mistakes
and I think we had fewer giveaways in critical areas from the
defenseman than I heard on the
road trip. Were asking them to
get the puck, find that passing
lane and move it quick to the

He added that CAC did clog
up areas where the Bisons were
trying to pass to players with
speed and it will be something
they will have to work on in
practice.

In the 3-3 tie against CAC,
Matt Halkovic, Gary Haden and
Brett Trentham each tallied one
while Haden, Cole Reinhardt,
Zach Vinnell and Tyler Petrie
scored in the 4-1 win over Medicine Hat.
The Bisons will be in Calgary
for two games this weekend,
starting on Oct. 24 against the
Calgary Buffaloes at 3:30 p.m.
and on Oct. 25 against the Calgary Royals at 2:30 p.m.
Spartans place fifth in provincials

The Strathmore Spartans high school cross country team did not disappoint at provincials as, although they were 21 points out from finishing first,
the coaches were satisfied with a respectable fifth
place finish out of 51 schools.
The coaches made sure they got a run in beforehand on their overnight stay in Edmonton and
made sure they got the proper rest and diet in before the provincial race. Upon arrival in Grande
Prairie, the runners did a walk through the course,
which helped the athletes strategies on the course.
It was one of the nicest courses Ive seen, said
coach Paul Sonsteby. It was not particularly tough.
Id say our zone course was a tougher run, which
typically happens. This course in Grande Prairie

was grass, wide-open Nordic trail, some hills but
nothing too tough and the short single track.
From coach Jerry Flaws perspective, who ran the
track a day prior, he thought it was challenging
for the pack of runners throughout the course of
the race but if runners were committed, they could
make up ground in times.
It was challenging enough to be a provincial
course but it wasnt difficult to take away from
good times, said Flaws. Our kids put up some
good times.
What Flaws liked about the course was that it
enabled the runners to stretch out at the beginning and pull away from the pack right up until
the single short track, where it was a sandy uphill
climb with roots.

like that we got to use our speed

And I think we slowed the play

all comes with time and we still

Junior A girl Hawks soar, still undefeated

The Holy Cross Collegiate
Hawks junior A girls volleyball
team seemed to be getting stronger in their matches they played
and it showed in being crowned
champions of their home tournament on Oct. 16 and 17, while
keeping the undefeated season
alive.
Coach Greg Appleyard thinks
the win showed the teams identity of hard work and intensity
they bring to the court game in
and game out.
Its great to be a part of a
group of a girls that play so well,
said Appleyard.
When they play intense,
theyre a lot of fun to watch. Everything is three hits and great
digs.
He added that this type of skill
does not happen often at this age.
Both Appleyard and their other coach Vito Peraino coached a
majority of these girls with the
Strathmore CHAOS club team
and carry the same approach into
the Hawks team, and everyone
gets ample playing time.
Just hard work, said Appleyard.
Our focus is not different than
club. If you can practice with intensity, you play with intensity.
As a team, all these tournaments,
were able to get everybody off
the bench in the game and everyone gets to play and thats pretty
special. It takes a whole team effort.
Captain Kimberly Kouwenhoven felt the team was positive
going into their home tournament because of being the hosts

and becoming accustomed to
winning.
Our whole team knows that
were a good team this year, she
said.
It feels great because at such a
young age, we have so many girls
that are just great volleyball players and all this coming together
makes us better.
She added the most adversity they faced was in the game
against Vulcan, who they played
against a couple of times before,
and how they knew each others
strengths, which in turn made for
a great court battle.
Meanwhile, the junior A boys
were defeated in the semi-finals
and unfortunately lost in the
third place game.

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Ernie on October 13, 2015. Ernie was the
youngest of 11 children born to Joseph and Pauline Zarazun. He is survived by his wife of 35 years
Shirley; his children Tracey (Grant) Howse, Brenda
(Reg) Chernoff, Melodie Ancheta, and Liana (Rob)
Zavislak; grandchildren Matt (Shawna) Borg, Jeremy Borg, Kyle Allen, Breanna Zavislak, Jenna Allen, Brayden Zavislak, and Aliera Chernoff; greatgrandson Jaxon Borg; sisters Josie Matsalla and

t the Annual General Meeting of the

Strathmore Regional Arts Collective
(SRAC) Society on Tuesday, October 13,
2015, it was motioned and passed that SRAC
shall dissolve as of November 30, 2015.
SRAC is deeply grateful to those who expressed
interest and support, and is especially thankful for
all sponsorships received over the past three years.
Though the SRAC board members tenaciously
devoted massive amounts of heart, time and energy
toward the objectives of SRAC, it was just too big
a job for such a small group of people. SRAC is
proud of its contributions to the promotion of the
arts and of its efforts to help others appreciate the
importance of art as a part of expression, culture,
and enjoyment of life. SRACs most fundamental
objectives were to be an umbrella organization to
gather arts groups and individuals to work together
and to find the arts a home.
SRAC played a significant role in increasing
awareness of the arts in the community and region,
which was achieved primarily by organizing three
Arts and Sounds Festivals. However, SRAC has not
been able to bring the arts under one umbrella as
hoped, nor has it made progress towards finding
the arts a home. As such, all board members agreed
that SRAC was not meeting its objectives. It is
important to remember there are several arts groups
based in Strathmore and many talented artists in this
community and surrounding region. We believe
that other events and opportunities promoting the
arts and arts awareness will present themselves in
the future.

Most people who own a home have a credit card. You need it for all kinds of major purchases: a new TV, building a
new deck, maybe even new appliances or better yet, a much needed, well-deserved, yes you earned it, kind of vacation.
Everyone knows that the best thing you can do is pay off the credit card every month. So a few months have gone by and
that credit card balance is still there. Now wait a minute, something else happened to you and your life and that credit
card balance is still there. Time has slipped by and you have been carrying a $15,000 balance on your credit card at 21
per cent interest for months now. No big deal, I will just keep making the minimum payments.
Yes you must make the minimum payments - but it will not get paid off this way. Its not entirely your fault. You make
the some money, have the same expenses, live the same lifestyle, and the lottery is just not working the way it used to.
If you own your own home, consider refinancing. If you are able to to pay off all these credit lines and debts owing how
would that make you feel. If you have a mortgage of $300,000 and you are able to add $15,000 to it and pay it all off at
3 per cent, the savings can be huge and the impact to your life can be substantial in two key ways. First your going to save
money in what you pay in interest. The second and most commonly overlooked piece to this is that
you will reduce your overall payments as well. So not only will you be saving money you will free
up more cash which you can use in any number of ways including paying off your mortgage faster.
Do yourself a favour, review your credit card statements. Go back as far as you have to to the first
month when you started carrying a balance over zero. If that was more than three months ago or
your credit card is at its limit, give me a call youll be glad you did.
