NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 2015

FAREWELL TO LONGEST SERVING CONDUCTOR

Sandhurst Community Brass has
reluctantly accepted the resignation
of its long standing conductor, Martin Hayter, and wants to thank him
for all his hard work. Martin led the
band for over five years; a period
which saw the band nearly double
in size and become respected as a
creditable and competent noncontesting band in the Hampshire /
Berkshire area.
Martin took the mixed abilities of
players and trained accordingly,
working up increasingly challenging
and always entertaining programmes which delighted community audiences time and again.
However, his hard work and dedication didnt stop there. The many
hours of planning emailing, phoning
and making extra trips to the band
room and venues to prepare for
rehearsals and events made all the
difference to ensure every performance was a resounding success.

of the same organisation as the

good bridge between the two, both
encouraging players from the contesting band to help out and play
in the Community Band and to see
some of his own players take the
step up into the silver band.
Sandhurst Community Brass now
starts the process of seeking a
new conductor as it looks to write

its next chapter.

Richard Davy-Smith,
Musical Director ad interim
Our sincere thanks to Richard for
taking over our musical leadership
at short notice, ensuring that the
band can continue its programme of
engagements and rehearsals while
we seek a new musical director.

SANDHURST COMMUNITY BRASS

THE SOUND OF SUMMER IN SANDHURST

Sandhurst Community Brass enjoyed another packed spring and
summer schedule this year, playing no less than five engagements
in the local community and beyond.
The highlight of the season was a
summer concert at Sandhurst
Community Hall on 13th June,
where an appreciative audience
were treated to a wide variety of
music ranging from Johann
Strauss to Richard Rodgers. As
usual, the band presented a number of soloists, including James
Pheney (repiano cornet) who gave
a beautiful performance of John
Denvers famous ballad Annies
Song. In the second half of the

concert, Ray Somers (euphonium)

delivered a stirring interpretation
of Benedictus, a haunting and
powerful piece from Karl Jenkins
contemporary mass entitled The
Armed Man. Rounding up the solos was Richard Davy-Smith (tenor
trombone) with a beautiful Gordon
Langford arrangement of the
welsh folk song The Ash Grove.
The concert was brought to a sparkling conclusion with a barnstorming encore of Instant Concert, a
piece of only three minutes duration yet featuring over 30 popular
melodies!
As well as playing at Crowthorne
May Fair earlier in the year and
providing worship music for Sand-

hursts annual outdoor Songs of

Praise service, the band featured
as guest performers with the U3A
Rainbow Singers in Blackwater.
This was a very enjoyable return
engagement for the band, having
hosted the U3A singers at one of
our own concerts in 2014.
The summer programme was
brought to a close with a joint engagement with Sandhurst Silver
Band, playing to the thronging
crowds of Hurley Village Fete
(pictured on front page) with a
selection of bandstand classics
and popular music. Thanks to
everyone who supported us during our summer season, we look
forward to seeing you again soon!

Looking Good!
If youve seen SCB around
recently, you will have noticed
were looking even smarter than
usual. Thats thanks to our new
uniform jackets, purchased after
fundraising efforts in 2014. Long
overdue, given that our old
jackets were older than some of
our players! Thanks to uniform
secretary Vigdis for managing the
purchase. The next issue will
undoubtedly include photos of
the jackets on their first official
outing at our Autumn Concert
