Projects/Internships/Seminars/Work Experience
Work Experience:
Organization: Mechanical Engineering Department, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur
Responsibility: To write a code for structured grid generation as a part of a project titled
Development of a robust general purpose CFD Solver

Duration:
Description:

August 2003
Both Algebraic as well as PDE based techniques would be employed for writing
the code.
Summer Internship
Organization: Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India
Responsibility: Simulation of blood flow inside the Sinus and aorta of the human heart for a new
design of artificial heart valve.
Duration:
May 2002 June 2002

Description:

The aim of the project was to simulate the periodic blood flow inside the sinus1
and aorta of a human heart for designing an artificial heart valve. Flow was been
simulated for various dimensions of sinus to provide numerical data for
fabrication of artificial heart valve. Fluent software was used for the simulation.

Projects
Flow around Rectangular Cylinder

This is an ongoing project. I am working on A numerical study of vortex-shedding from

rectangular cylinders with ground effect under the guidance of Prof. V Eswaran, Mechanical
Engineering Department, IIT Kanpur. The aim of the project is to numerically simulate the flow
around a rectangular cylinder kept in vicinity of a wall (flat plate). It involves the study of vortex
shedding from the cylinder as i) the distance between the cylinder and wall is varied, ii) the width-toheight ratio of the cylinder is varied. Finite Volume Methods are used for solving the problem.
3D Unstructured Delaunay Mesh Generation
I am working on this project under the guidance of Prof. C S Upadhyay, Aerospace
Department, IIT Kanpur. The aim of this project is to generate 3D Delaunay unstructured mesh using
Watson's algorithms. Point insertion rule is based on method described in paper titled 3D
unstructured mesh generation by Y.Zheng, RW.Lewis and D.T. Gethin published in Journal of
computer methods in applied mechanics and engineering 134 (1996) 249-268. For 1D meshing binary
tree technique proposed in the paper is employed. Some efficient search algorithms have been
developed.
Foldable Bicycle
This was an innovative attempt to enhance the utilities of a bicycle in our day to day life. The
main objective of the design was to reduce the height and width of the bicycle to half in the folded
state thereby reducing the folded area to one-fourth of the unfolded area. In order to achieve this
objective four critical parts were identified for folding - Main frame, Handle frame, Seat and Pedals.
Different folding mechanisms were used for folding different parts. While designing it was also kept
in the mind that the cycle should not look weird once unfolded. So, in the unfolded state the
dimensions and aesthetics are more or less similar to an ordinary bicycle. Further, it is designed for
both males and females. A prototype was actually made and tested in the manufacturing science
laboratory.

Linkage
Linkage is user-friendly software written in java for synthesis and analysis of 4-R Linkages.
The purpose behind developing this software was to provide a quick tool for solving the problems of
synthesis.
Profit rate optimization of turning process
GP was found not to be useful for profit rate maximization, due to its signomial nature. The
aim of the project was to convert the problem of profit rate maximization to posynomial form
through modification of constraint set and to solve the modified problem using GP
IITK Power Station
This project involved detailed designing of a power house that can meet the needs of IITK.
All the details were reported.
Knee Exerciser
It involved the designing of a Knee Exerciser for patients with weak knees for strengthening
their muscles. It was a very simple and elegant design which was widely appreciated.
Single Drive Printing Machine
As part of manufacturing processes course I along with my team designed, fabricated and
assembled this project which brought out very beautifully the concept of gear shift in machines.
Globalization and Indian Economy
The aim of the project was two fold - to study the effect of Multi National Companies
(MNCs) on domestic companies and to study the effect of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on various
macro-economic indices (GDP etc). It was found that MNCs have mixed effect on domestic
companies while FDI has a positive effect on macro-economic indices.
Conditions of Prisoners in India
The aim of the project was to study the condition of prisoners in Indian prisons. It was found
that most of the Indian prisons are over crowded and prisoners live in sub-standard conditions.
