INTRODUCTION

Mathematics according to national education policy 1986 should be visualized as the vehicle to
train a child to think , reason, analyze and articulate logically
In order to enrich leaners mastery and meaningful learning of mathematics it is necessary to
reduce to the bearable minimum its level of abstraction with the use of instrumental and other
materials , models etc

The mathematics laboratory is a place rich in manipulative material to which children have ready
access to handle them perform mathematical experiments play mathematical games solve
mathematical puzzles and become involved in other activities. An integral part of mathematics
laboratory is the manipulation of objects .Through manipulating concrete material the child is
better able to bridge the gap between the real and the abstract world

It is also a process and a procedure for teaching and learning mathematics . The laboratory
approach allows pupil to setup mathematical experiments for the purpose of discovering some
mathematical principle , pattern or process. Even teacher can be part of the process ,group
discussion and individual projects. A mathematics laboratory is activity centered the child is
placed in problem solving salutation and through self exploration and discovery ,he or she provides
a solution based on his or her experience needs and interests

NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE

Recent laboratory work in mathematics is receiving increasing attention .The mathematics

laboratory helps pupil to develop new concept and understandings meaningfully through
experimental activities dealing with concrete situation .It is particularly difficult to understand
mathematical concept or they are abstract in nature .They can be learned better through
observation of the concrete situations and experiments and manipulation of concrete objects
.Activities such as measuring and drawing, counting ,weighing , averaging and estimation, taking
the reading from instruments , recording , comparing, analysis, classifying and checking data,
collecting data working with data and so on will involve the use of physical instruments and can be
labeled as laboratory work.
Some of this work can be done in the classroom that is suitably arranged and and equipped and
some can takes the form of elementary field work. Most students find such work highly interesting
and through such activities they can develop many mathematical concepts and insight with an
interest and a clarity often not attained through a strictly intellectual approach .More over , these
concepts become more meaningful , functional and in endurable when they are seen in relation to
actual applications. The creative and constructive usages of the students can be satisfied through
the involvement in the laboratory work ,laboratory work develop a habit of critical thinking and
logical reasoning among students. Complex theoretical concept can be made clear by performing
suitable experiments. By laboratory method, in students practical mindedness can be developed .It
develop confidence among students

TITLE OF THE STUDY

A study on importance of using mathematics laboratory for teaching mathematics

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

To understand the importance of using mathematics laboratory while teaching the

required lesson
To find how to improve the knowledge by using laboratory method

METHODOLOGY

For the particular study the investigator collect data from Govt .H.S.S Ramapuram. During school
School initiatory programme .Normative surey method is used for the study .Tool used for the
study was questionnaire . Questionnaire contain 10 questions which are distributed among 5
teacher of both UP and High school

From the analysis of data it is clear that 100% of teachers are of the opinion that laboratory work
develop critical thinking and logical thinking among students and also mathematics laboratory
helps to concretize the abstract mathematical concept and 80% teacher are of the opinion that
bookish knowledge of the students can be correlated practically with their daily life and most of
the teacher help students in their laboratory work only few are of the opinion that they give
laboratory work for students and all the teacher are of the opinion that all the lessons cannot be
taught by using laboratory method

FINDINGS

Critical thinking and logical reasoning of students can be developed

Laboratory method is a multi sensory approach to learning
Laboratory work develop interest in learning mathematics

SUGGESTIONS

The settings and arrangement of this room should be such that it create an atmosphere for
the study and teaching of mathematics
A big black board should be provided in the mathematics laboratory for drawing geometric
figures all illustrate necessary things for performing the laboratory work
Pictures of mathematicians , chart showing the contribution of mathematicians, history of
mathematics. Biography of mathematicians are helpful in insprising students and can
placed in mathematics laboratory
Various models such as triangle, square, solid etc be stored in mathematics laboratory

CONCLUSION

Laboratory method is multisensory approach of learning which develop interest in learning

mathematics .It enable the student to learn by doing the things so learned are retained in the mind
for longer time .The laboratory work develop critical thinking and logical thinking among students
and also mathematical laboratory helps to concretize the abstract mathematical concept. The
laboratory approach allow the pupil to set up mathematical experiments for the purpose of
discovering some mathematical principle, pattern or process
