CURRICULAR STATEMENT
To develop different dimension of knowledge information on area of
quadrilaterals through group discussion, lectural method , explanation and
evaluation by questioning ,participation in group discussion , reporting and
presentation

CONTENT ANALYSIS
TERMS : trapezium ,triangle parallelogram ,area ,height
FACTS :

A quadrilateral is a four sided closed figure.

Trapezium is a quadrilateral.

One pair of opposite sides of a trapezium are parallel.

Triangle has three sides, three angles and three edges.

Opposite sides of a parallelogram are equal.

The opposite sides of a parallelogram are parallel.

CONCEPT : area of trapezium

DEFINITION :
A trapezium is a four sided closed figure having only one pair of opposite sides
are parallel.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
The student will be able to ,
1.

Recall relative knowledge information about quadrilaterals.

2.

Discribe about the peculiarities of quadrilaterals.

3.

Interpret about quadrilaterals.

4.

Exemplify different situations of quadrilaterals.

5.

Execute the above concept.

6.

Organize different elements that fit in a situation.

7.

Judge the appropriateness .

8.

10.

Accept the beauty of mathematical principles.

PRE REQUISITES

Pupils have knowledge about two dimensional figures, triangle and

trapezium.

Pupils have knowledge about how to find the area of the triangle and
parallelogram.

TEACHING LEARNING AIDS

Cardboard model of the trapezium , triangle and parallelogram.

Chart containing the figure and the definition of trapezium.

Flash card containing the formula of the area of trapezium.

Activity card.

Common classroom equipments.

Classroom process

Pupils response

Introductory activity
To check the student previous knowledge about
geometry, teacher asked the students, what is
geometry?
Geometry is the study of shapes. It is originated Pupils listening carefully
from two greek words geo and metry. Geo means
earth and metry means the study of measure of
earth.
Euclid is the father of geometry. Teacher asked
Activity 1
By showing the cardboard model of parallelogram Pupils looking carefully and find
and triangle, teacher ask them to find their their peculiarities.
peculiarities.
What are the peculiarities of the above model? Pupils replied they are two

dimensional figures .by finding the
area we can understand their size.

Activity 2

Pupils trying to make the

trapezium and finally they make
the trapezium.

Teacher giving the cardboard model of the triangle

and a parallelogram to students and ask them to
make a trapezium using these two.

Pupils replied,
It is a quadrilateral.
One pair of opposite sides are

parallelogram and ask the students what are the
peculiarities of a trapezium ?

By adding the area of a triangle

and a parallelogram, we get the
area of this figure.
Pupils replied ; base x height
Pupils replied ; bh
Pupils replied ;
base x height + bh
How to find the area of this figure ? teacher asked

What is the equation of the area of a

parallelogram? Teacher asked

What is the equation of the area of a triangle?

Then can you say what is the area of trapezium?

Teacher drawing a trapezium on the blackboard and

dividing it into a parallelogram and a triangle and
Pupils replied; ah
explained,

Pupils replied ; b-a

Pupils replied ; h
The upper side of the parallelogram is equal to the
upper side of the trapezium. We denote the upper
side of the parallelogram as a . then the base of
the parallelogram is also a. we denote h is the
height of the parallelogram.

Area of triangle =1/2 (b-a) h

a
Pupils replied ;
ah + (b-a)h

a
then what is the area of a parallelogram ? teacher
asked

if we denote the base of the trapezium as b then

what is the base of the triangle? Teacher asked
Pupils reading the flash card
a

Pupils listening carefully

Here what is the height of the parallelogram?

Teacher asked.
Then we can see that the height of the
parallelogram is also same as the height of the
triangle .

Pupils reading carefully

What is the area of this triangle?

the

From this what is the area of the trapezium ?

Teacher simplify the equation on the blackboard.

Area of trapezium = ah + (b-a) h

= ah + bh ah
= ah + bh
= h (a + b )

Teacher showing the flash card containing equation

AREA OF TRAPEZIUM =

h(a+b)

What do you understand from this equation?

Teacher asked

Ie; the area of the trapezium is equal to the half of

the product of the sum of its parallal sides and
distance between them.

Teacher showing the chart containing definition

THE AREA OF THE TRAPEZIUM IS EQUAL TO THE

HALF OF THE PRODUCT OF THE ITS PARALLAL
SIDES AND DISTANCE BETWEEN THEM

Activity -3

Teacher give some activity card containing some

problems to solve to the students.
