INDIAN DEMOCRACY

The word Democracy came from french language to english in 16 th century and trace of this word can also be found
in greek language derived from word demokratia, whereas demos means people and kratia means rule or
power.we can say that meaning of democracy is power or rule by people. Oxford dictionary defines democracy as a
system of government by whole population or by eligible members elected by people. Normally we hear
democracy is being referred as Government of the people , by the people for the people. After attainment of
independence on 15th of august 1947, policy makers of independent India engaged themselves in the formation of
constitution.India adopted its constitution on 26 th november 1949.India became socalist secular democratic republic
and accepted parliamentary democratic system.
One of the most important feature of Indian democracy is parliamentary democratic system
where eligible representatives of people form government or support government in policy formation.India is a
country where people from diversified race, religion, culture resides,so for sake of equality in policy formation and
governance parliamentary democratic system adopted. in people choose their representative through election and
send them in parliament to form government or to assist government in policy formation. These representatives are
liableor accountable to citizen of country.parliamentary democratic system has this unique quality which accepts &
listen to all people who came from various backgrounds, cast, religion.inclusive government and therby ensuring
good governance is main idea behind parliametary democratic system, unlike presidential democratic system where
president of country is supremo and takes all decisions.Makers of Indian constitution knew that presidential
democratic system It will not work for India,as it does not ensure equality for all. Preamble of indian constitution
states that equality, justice, liberty and fraternity to all fellow citizens of country.
To ensure this equality Indian policy makers gave right to vote for every citizen whose age
is above 18 years. It has social implications as India has 150 years of colonial past, peoples of this country were
exploited by British government so to bring confidence in society and make people realize that they are important as
well as free to live with dignity and choose governmentfor their own country, rulers of independent India empowered
citizens with right to vote.
Empowerment of citizens in general is key behind every policy which was undertaken by the government
just after independence. As stated in preamble justice for all is important for that matter india adopted vibrant judicial
system. Supreme Court of India is considered one of best court in world whhere law and justice is enshrined.judicial
system in india has right to essue ordinance and question central governmaent if they are pursuing policies which are
not in favour of citizens of country.watch over one by the other is one of the most important aspect of Indian
democracy, governments watch over judicial system-judicial systems watch over government and opposition partys
watch over government. This ensures efficient work from everyone.
From political point of veiw Indian democratic system is vibrant as it gives apportunity to work
for fellow citizen of country.Decentralisation of power from prime minister to sarpanch is unique quality of our
democracy this kind of delegation of authority you will not find even in developed nations from west.Due to this
quality every one from government feels he/she has power to influence society and bring about positive change in
society ,which in turn helps to ensure dynamic changes in socio-economic level of country and also helps to reduce
burden over central government.revenue and expenditure is shared among states and duties and power is also
shared ,this is ideal example of co-operative fedralism.
Co-operative fedralism helps to raise socio-economic levels of citizens of country. It helps promote
social security schemes in country thereby malking efforts to erradicate poverty of bridge gap between rich and poor
which in turn reduces income inequality among people.

Since independence government took planning route to kickstart economic deveopment is country.planning
comission was set up to formulate policy and its achievements are well known. Due to this GDP of country incresed
and per capita income also increased .state along with central government took steps to ensure fruits of this
development should reach to lower strata of society now recently Worlf Bank said India was home to largest
number of poor people in 2012 but now idia poverty ratio is lowest among poor countries with largest number of
poor. This has attracted attention of the investors from across the globe to invest in india through FDI.
We have achieved alot in last 67 years but there is room for improvement in some areas e.g
though official data says poverty ratio is declined but number of people who are hungry in country is increased alot
during course of time, this irony.According to united nations Hunder report india is home to largest number hungry
people in world with 194 million people India topped list.over the years communal tension among csociety incresed,
politician believe divisive politics is key to get into power and thats why youthfrom country loosing their faith from
politician, politics and democracy that needs to be reinforced again.
Since last loksabha election situation has changed drastically.people of india gave mandate
to strong leader and after long time government with majority came into power as people were fed up with coilation
politics.important decisions taken by this government include steps to ensure good governance (current government
believes on minimum government, maximum governance),various social security schemes and fiancial inclusion
program to increse credit exposure and robust financia institution.
Due to such developments are taking place in a country, all credit rating agencies have incresed
Indias growth prospects ,all of them are pointing towards 7-7.8% growth in current fiscal. India approched United
nations for permanent place is United nations security council by stating India is fastest grwoing largest democratic
economy in the world.we are witnessing positive effects as peoples faith has restored according to a survey
conducted by private entit indian citizens are now most satisfied about current government and in terms of
discharge of their duty and overall work style. After all that is what mattersd a most in democratic country!.
