Exercises

Exercise 1
Within your project groups identify a system. Then, list and identify all the characteristics
within this system. Use power-point slides to present your answers in the tutorial.
Exercise 2
Choose an organization that you interact with regularly and list as many different
systems (whether computer-based or not) as you can that are used to process
transactions, provide information to managers and executives, help managers and
executives make decisions, aid groups to make decisions together, capture knowledge and
provide expertise, help design products and / or facilities, and assist people in
communicating with each other.
Exercise 3 Tutorial 1
Search on the Internet and from books on the phases of SDLC. How many phases are
mentioned and what are they?
Exercise 4
Group Discussion
List the problems of the current system given in the project case study. Outline the
possible solutions for the problems identified.

Exercise 6
Analyze your proposed system for the project in terms of its operational feasibility based
on the PIECES framework

Exercise 7
Use your Internet skills to find some sample questionnaires that you could use for your
questionnaire design.
Exercise 8
Design one set of questions which could be used when determining user requirements
during each of the following:
An interview
A survey
Exercise 9
As a group, briefly explain SSADM and RAD methodologies.

Exercise 13
Based on the case study given, write out the business activities
TEXTBOOK INVENTORY SYSTEM
The purpose of the TEXTBOOK INVENTORY SYSTEM at a campus bookstore
is to supply textbooks to students for classes at a local university. The universitys
academic departments submit initial data about courses, instructors, textbooks, and
projected enrolments to the bookstore on a TEXTBOOK MASTER LIST. The bookstore
generates a PURCHASE ORDER, which is sent to publishing companies supplying
textbooks. Book orders arrive at the bookstore accompanied by a PACKING SLIP, which
is checked and verified by the receiving department. Students fill out a BOOK
REQUEST that includes course information. When they pay for their books, the students
are given a SALES RECEIPT.
Exercise 14
Based on the case study above, draw context and Level 0 Diagram
