11 Out Of 10 For The White Horse

On Saturday 15th of October
I drove in to Cromer to sample a
selection of dishes created by
The White Horses new chef
Christopher Dunningham.
What an honour it was indeed
with a score of 11 out of 10.
Having already enjoyed a full
3 course lunch at the Pilgrim
Shelter in Trimingham I was
definitely far from hungry so

Above: Christopher Dunningham with Annie

this sample dinner (See Left) did me proud
and left me feeling very full up.
By just after 8 pm all of the thirty or more
diners were seated and ready to face the test
of how good a chef Christopher was.
After this wonderful four course dinner
I went around the room to ask the diners
how they all scored the meal.

Dear Editor

I would like to express my appreciation of the

efforts that Philip and Lis Keddell have put
into bringing us a very personal insight of
the goings on in North Norfolk.

Their style showed great enthusiasm for the

area and its people that struck a chord with
locals and visitors alike.
I hope that Lis hip operation gives her a
renewed active life and that Philip will be
able to spend more time in his love of
sailing on the Broads. See photo!
I look forward to the Crab Tales continuing
in their established tradition.
My best wishes for the future,
Paul Damen

Dear Lis and Philip,

It was with some sadness & surprise that I learned

of your retiring from your involvement with the
Crab Tales. It goes without saying that many of
the readers - and writers - will feel the same way.
The Crab Tales has become a local institution
over so many years and it is hoped that the new
owners will keep up the standards you have set
but, more particularly, not lose the edge that
has set this publication apart from other bland
local periodicals.
It is this occasional non-PC approach, along
with Philips unique style of reporting, that
has created this breath of spring in the field of
local media.
Many times have I personally benefited from
your liberal acceptance of articles from my
(and Mikkki Rokks) pen - I dont ever recall

your editing anything out of my material,

not least of all my eloquent choice of
questionable bad language.
All power to you.
(Aside) My Wife, Judy, and I have developed a
strong and binding friendship with the Keddells
over the years - purely as a result of meeting
through this paper.
I remember well the occasion when Philip was
summoned to attend an interview with the then
Chief Executive of NNDC for alleged racism in
a joke that had been submitted by a reader.
I was invited along as a silent witness.
Oh dear, this poor guy tied himself in knots
and Mr K. and his not-so-silent witness
were pissing themselves with laughter
before we even left his office.
I know that things havent worked out quite as
they should have with the transition of the Crab
Tales and I understand they, along with the
ever-supportive Liz King, have been put on
the spot, at the last minute.
Whatever may be said, believe me, the Keddells
are a loyal, thoroughly trustworthy & generous
pair and I can only wish them all the very best
for a long and happy retirement.

Dear Editor,

Im not sure if you can help but on Friday 9th

October while on a short break to Cromer my
husband lost his affiliated working mens club
cards, in a small brown leather wallet, we believe
this could have been either in Sheringham or
between East Runton, The Gap along the beach
to Cromer & back or between East Runton via
the road along to Hazelbury caravan site & up
by the cottages or along Runton road to the back
of our accommodation at Seascape House.
This is a long shot as we tried to retrace our steps
but had no luck as it was a couple of hours later
before we realised.
Weve spent many happy weeks in Cromer over
the years at one time in our own static caravan
but this is the first time weve ever lost anything.
If the wallet is found we will gladly reimburse
postage as the wallet was sentimental as it was
made by his mum who sadly died years ago.
Name on the cards is Ronald James and the
club was St. James WMC Northampton.
Yours hopefully,
Sandra E James (Mrs.)

Dear Editor,

Alan & Marilyn Bumfrey would like to thank

everyone who came to help them celebrate
their Golden Wedding Anniversary on Sunday
13th September with their three daughters,
Denise, Karen & Lisa as pictured.

Dear Liz,

I would like to take the opportunity through your

magazine to thank all the visitors (many with the
Crab Tales in their hand) who came to my
Art Exhibition in Shirleys Shed during
two extended weekends in September.
The exhibition which proved very successful,
was held to raise money for 2 charities close
to my heart, they are Breast Cancer Care
and Lymphoedema Support Network.
The Success was due to the help from family,
friends, neighbours and the many Mundesley
traders who were so helpful in spreading the
word with posters, invitations and by word of
mouth. Because of the help I was able to send
200 to Breast Cancer Care and 180 to
Lyphoedema Support Network
As a P.S, I would like to say THANK YOU
to Mundesley and the surrounding villages.

Below is a history of the Victoria Rd, Mundesley

1912 House I would like to hear from anyone
who has anything to add to it.
I first came to Mundesley when I was 12 or 13
camping with the Boys Brigade at Trimingham.
We could not go onto the beach because mines
were still present. Later my wife & I would go
to Mundesley with our children. Ben Flaxman
was known to me, as he & I worked for Thomas
Moy Ltd. My wife died some 9 years ago and
for the past 4+ years I have had for my friend
and companion a lovely Mundesley lady.
The History Of The 1912 House
In 1912 & before James Farrow known as Jimmy
worked for Thomas Moy in Cromer and was
asked by the Company to move to Mundesley
as Depot Foreman there, to which he agreed.
Thomas Moy then built a house for him to
live in which was the 1912 House
He worked there for many years before he was
transferred to Harleston, living with him was his
granddaughter Madge. She was great friend
of my late wife is still a good friend of mine.

They had a wonderful weekend of celebrations

including a family meal,a suprise day trip on
the Norfolk Broads (organised by the girls)
and the party where they were joined by over
100 family and friends and raised 600 for
their chosen charities, Woodfields School
and Arthritis Research.
You may know Marilyn from the Tourist
Information Centre in Cromer where she
has worked for many years and the couple
have lived in Cromer for over 40 years.
Their celebrations finished with a 2 week
holiday in Cyprus.
Yours Sincerely
Karen Chastney

Dear Editor,

The President of North Norfolk Speakers Club,

Stuart Richards, recently visited Asheville
Speakers Club in North Carolina.
Both clubs are part of Toastmasters International,
which has 14,650 clubs worldwide & since 1925
has been helping people from all walks of life
to gain confidence in speaking and develop
skills in communication and leadership.
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. I was informed
that dress code was casual & it can be daunting
visiting another club, especially wearing shorts!
I was quickly put at ease by the warmth of the
hospitality I received and as members of Toastmasters there was common ground and shared
experience. I learned more about improvised
speaking and left with new ideas to bring back
to my own club. said Stuart.

...about the police, but you rarely hear about the

positive things they do, such as this incident
involving a biker and a frozen carburetor.
Last January on a bitterly cold winters
day, a North Dakota State Trooper on
patrol came upon a motorcyclist who
was stalled by the roadside.
The biker was swathed in heavy protective
clothing and wearing a full-face helmet to
protect the face from the cold weather.
and clear in what she expects and
gets from her customers, who are
all always happy.
Yes there are many pubs in the town
generally, but few can equal the level
of service that Annie and her partner
Ken offer their happy customers.
Philip Keddell

After a most enjoyable evening, I drove e

home feeling very well fed & more than
happy to become a regular diner in the
future. Next time I will take Lis with
me as she was unable to spare the
time on that evening.
The White Horse on Cromers West Street
is only a couple of doors towards the town
centre of Cromer from my office front door,
so as locals, we (Lis & I) have noticed the
way that Annie has run this place so well
over the years that she has been running it.
You cannot but admire Annies way of
doing business and she always as a smile
on her face, while being honest, up front

Whats the matter? asked the Trooper.

Carburetors frozen, was the terse reply.
Pee on it. Thatll thaw it out.
I cant, said the biker.
OK, watch me closely and Ill show you.
The Trooper unzipped and promptly warmed
the carburetor as promised.
Moments later the bike started and the rider
drove off, waving.
A few days later, the local State Troopers
office received a note of thanks from the
father of the motorcyclist.
It began: I would like to thank you on behalf
of my daughter Jill...

RNLI Cromer.....

........visited by a party from Nelson Journey

A party of adults & children spent several hours
visiting the boathouse at the end of the pier and
handling artifacts at the Henry Blogg Museum.
They then had a typical seaside lunch which
involved chips.
Many crew members volunteered to do a special
launch of the all-weather lifeboat Lester after
theyd had a good look inside the Tamar class
boat. They were able to see where the crew sit
on a shout as well as further below the decks.
After practising trying on crew outfits, they made
the short journey to the Henry Blogg Museum
to learn more about the historical aspects of
Cromers long association with the RNLI.
All of this meant hungry appetites & Grant Zelos
of Mary Janes fish restaurant, donated sausages
and chips for all the visitors. Everyone agreed
that it had made a fitting finish to the day.
Finally at 2pm, our visitors left with goodie bags
donated by Cromer RNLI and big smiles on
their faces.
Visit the RNLIs YouTube channel for more
films & follow our rescue stories on Twitter.

for Friends

About With Friends member Rachael Phillips

recently did a 10 mile walk around Cromer and
the Runtons to raise almost 200 for the charity
she attends for four days each week.

The sponsored walk was arranged almost

entirely by Rachael and was not her first
as she has done the same thing for other
charities in the past.
Last year Rachael joined the About With Friends
Workskills team and worked one day a week in
the Community Caf in Tucker Street, Cromer.
However, she has been doing so well that she
was recently able to increase her days to four.
Rachael now works three days in the caf
and one day in the Production unit on
Middlebrook Way.
On her day off Rachael organised this sponsored
walk which was 2 laps of a course that followed
the coastal path out of Cromer into East Runton
then looped out round Incleboro Fields to West
Runton before turning back to Cromer.
She was seen off from the Charitys Holt Road
headquarters by the Youth Advisory Board who
were meeting there and was met about 4 hours
later by the About With Friends adult social
group who were in the caf prior to visiting
the cinema.
Development Manager Steve Smith walked with
her and said: Rachael was ready for another
lap but I needed a cuppa. Its marvellous that
Rachael has done this walk but also great that
she took on so much of the work involved and
got all her own sponsorship. We are all very
proud of her.
The money will be used to buy special
equipment for the charity.

The Coasthopper

The future of a popular coastal bus service has

been secured, following agreement between
the NCC and Stagecoach in Norfolk.
The Coasthopper service, which annually carries
around 500,000 passengers, will run an hourly
service from October 12th between Hunstanton
and Cromer until Easter 2016.
The councils longstanding investment in Coasthopper, building the route from scratch, had
previously provided a platform for the summer
elements to be operated on a commercial basis.
Now Stagecoach in Norfolk will also operate
this winter period & into next spring without
council subsidy.
Toby Coke, Chairman of NCCs Environment,
Development and Transport Committee, said:
The Coasthopper represents a vital means of
transport for many residents in west Norfolk
and across the north Norfolk coast, so its
great news that Stagecoach will continue
to operate the route throughout the winter
and until next spring.
The fact that the County Council has managed
to ensure that no subsidy continues to be
required for this service means this is not
just good news for passengers but the
Norfolk taxpayer as well.
Andy Campbell, Managing Director of Stagecoach
Norfolk, said: Coasthopper is a superb example
of partnership working between public and
private sectors. The effort and investment put
in by both parties since the service started in
1996 has produced the success story that we
see today.
I am delighted that we have been able to
secure the future of the service with the
winter timetable until next spring.

Cletus Is Passing..
........by Billy Bobs hay barn one day when,
through a gap in the door, he sees Billy Bob
doing a slow and sensual striptease in front
of an old John Deere tractor.
Buttocks clenched, he performs a slow pirouette,
and gently slides off first the right strap of his
overalls, followed by the left.

He then hunches his shoulders forward and in a

classic striptease move, lets his overalls fall down
to his hips, revealing a torn & frayed plaid shirt.
Then, grabbing both sides of his shirt, he rips it
apart to reveal his stained T-shirt underneath.
With a final flourish, he tears the T-shirt from his
body & hurls his baseball cap onto a pile of hay.
Having seen enough, Cletus rushes in and says,
What the worldre ya doing, Billy Bob?
Good grief, Cletus, ya scared the bejeebers
out of me, says an obviously embarrassed
Billy Bob .......
But me n the wife been havin trouble
lately in the bedroom dpartment, and
the therapist suggested I do something
sexy to a tractor.

New Zealand

At the time government policy had not yet been

out-sourced; we still owned the infrastructure,
the power, the gas, the water, the phones, the
post office and the national airline.

A Users Guide By John Clarke

New Zealand is the most beautiful country in the

world, as is clearly stated in the UN Charter.
The land is nourished by warm sunshine each
morning and receives good rainfall around
lunchtime. It is an egalitarian nation made up
of well over four million rugged individualists
and naturally gifted sportspeople and is run on
alternate days by the government and whoever
bought the national infrastructure.
Like Australia, New Zealand was established as
a colonial economy by the British. This meant
they bought our wool & our meat, although not
for our benefit. It was purchased from the farmers
by British companies, shipped on British ships
and processed in British factories before being
sold in British shops in British currency. The
money then went into British banks.
I think we can probably all see the problem here.
The British made more out of New Zealand than
New Zealanders did. This changed slightly in the
early 1970s when Britain went into the Common
Market. Kids had been doing school projects about
this throughout the 60s but it came as an enormous
surprise to the New Zealand government and it
has taken them some time to adjust.
The principal business in N.Z. used to be sheep but
the country has now moved into milk in a big way
and if youd like to enjoy the beautifully clean
swift-flowing New Zealand river system, you
should make every effort to get out there before
the dairy industry gets any more successful.

New Zealand also produces large quantities of

fruit, wine, fish, coal, wood pulp, flightless birds,
cups of tea, middle-distance runners and other
peoples film industries.
Before the British, the Maori people arrived from
Hawaii in 1273, at about 4.15pm. There were
allegedly people here before called the Moriori,
and may have been people even before that.
Like most major democracies, N.Z. is run by
international capital and a few local big-shots
who tickle the till and produce a set of annual
accounts in a full range of colours.
The national parliament is in Wellington although
very little of any importance has ever occurred
there. The country works a lot better during the
weekends than during the week, there are no states
and the senate voted itself out of existence after
WW2. When the Lower House eventually follows
their excellent example, constitutional experts
agree the next step will be beers all round.
In 1893, women in New Zealand were the first
in the world to get the vote and more recently
women have run as Prime Minister, Opposition
Leader, Chief Justice and Governor General. The
countrys most famous pop singer, best known

10

opera star, most famous short story writer, greatest

novelist and most consistent world champion
athlete are all women. Theyre not allowed in
the All Blacks as yet, but dont be fooled. Its
just a matter of time. New Zealand women are
stroppy, imaginative and a major strength in
both the Maori and Pakeha cultures. In some
New Zealand families, women are practically
running things.
During the 1970s, New Zealand was confronted
by very serious economic and political crises,
although according to police records, theres
some suspicion these were both inside jobs.
During that time N.Z. rugby administrators were
ex-forwards who looked like spuds in their jackets
and when they announced that they were sending
an All Black team on a tour to South Africa, there
were suggestions it might be time to go and get
some new spuds, and maybe some whod played
in the backs. At this stage Nelson Mandela had
served about 10 of his 27 years in prison and the
rest of the world took the radical left-wing position
that democracy might be worth a try in the region.
New Zealand Prime Minister Norman Kirk went
to see the Rugby Union.
Im the Prime Minister he explained.
Is that right? said the spuds.
Wed rather you didnt go to South Africa said
Norman It will look like an endorsement of the
white supremacist policies of the South African
government, to which we are opposed.
So what? said the spuds. (Im summarising a
bit here, obviously).
So its not going to happen, explained Norman.
The spuds were furious. They saw this action by
the government as a direct threat to the way the
country was run, & after a smaller Prime Minister
had been elected in 1975, the tour went ahead.
As a result of New Zealands endorsement of the
white supremacist South African regime, the
Montreal Olympics in 1976 were boycotted by
26 African nations. So what? said the spuds
and the smaller Prime Minister.
And so it was that the return Springbok tour of
New Zealand in 1981 was a famous disaster, for
the spuds and the government did not have the
support of the people, the nation was divided &
brother spoke not to brother, nor sister to sister,
nor yet generation to generation, each of its kind.
And there was a gnashing of teeth and the scribes
were thrown into a great confusion & there came
a heavy sadness upon the people and upon the
land, and upon the face of the deep.
The economic crisis of the 70s occurred over the
issue of debt. Was the N.Z. economy borrowing
too much overseas? While this question was being
considered by economists, a Debt for Equity Swap
was organised by a group called I Just Drove
the Getaway Vehicle.

The Bank of N.Z. was still a New Zealand bank

and one or two of the newspapers were still owned
in the country. During the early 1980s however,
the New Zealand economy was put in the hands
of finance ministers due to a filing error, and
authorities are still looking for the black box.
A social democracy with only one previous owner
was asset-stripped and was replaced by a series
of franchises. Rugby sides stopped being called
Canterbury, Wellington, Otago and Auckland
and were instead given the names of animals,
colours and weather conditions.
The next thing anyone knew theyd appointed
a currency dealer as Prime Minister and the
equities market became a place of worship.
New Zealanders dont have much trouble working
out what they think. Its the next bit that might
need some work. In 1969 I was standing in a pub
in a country town in Otago.
Theyd run out of Speights & we were drinking
a beverage produced in the north. The man next
to me was deeply unimpressed and made a
number of uncharitable statements about
the quality of what was on offer.
You dont like it? I said. I dont he confirmed
Its bloody terrible he said. He then thought for
a moment and resolved the matter in his mind.
This the worst beer Ive ever tasted he said.
Ill be glad when Ive had enough.
This probably wasnt the answer.
Complaining about whats wrong but not
taking action, has the same effect as not
noticing whats wrong.

Incidentally, N.Z. remains the most beautiful

country in the world. Theres no question about
this. You can go to any part of it with confidence,
at any time of year, with the possible exception
of Hawera at Christmas, Otautau in August
and Taihape in a stiff westerly.
From William Keddell
As a former Kiwi who moved to the UK in late
1979, I have to say that life in New Zealand has
changed rather a lot in the last few decades.
Because of the low level of population, it does
tend to still be rather lacking in different styles
and approaches to life generally.
Yes, it is still very beautiful and remains a very
pleasant place to visit, as I do every two or so
years, but it is not somewhere to live.
Many thanks to my brother William for
emailing this to us.

Mental Wellbeing Historic Airfield

Mindfulness, Emotional Wellbeing &
Mental Health (Whats it all about)!
Hello and welcome to my new column where
each month I will be exploring the many facets
of emotional and mental wellbeing in practice
and theory.
First I would like to share a bit about myself.
My name is David Maddax I am 44 yrs old and
a fully qualified Person-Centred Counsellor
and member of the British Association for
Counselling and Psychotherapy.
For the last 15 years I have been working with a
broad range of organisations large & small mainly
in the public, volunteer and community sectors.
My work has not only involved counselling but
running various workshops around our understanding of emotional & mental wellness, the
practical application of mindfulness to our daily
lives as well as demystifying and challenging
taboos about mental health in todays society.

No Longer At Risk

The Second World War and Cold War former

airfield, RAF Coltishall, has been rescued and
removed from Historic Englands Heritage at
Risk Register annual survey of the health of
the historic environment.
This time last year the airfield was described as
being in very bad condition & deteriorating
or deteriorating significantly. But now the site
has been restored to good enough condition to
enable it to reach the requirements to be
removed from the list.
When the County Council purchased the site
for 4m in 2013, it had been decaying for
more than six years as it was unused.

I have also facilitated various support groups

for health issues such as prostate Cancer, and
spent 12 months training with Indian Yoga
masters as well as a meditative guru.
I moved to the village of Sidestrand earlier this
year and hope to continue & expand on this work
within the community by offering various workshops & courses outlined above as well as drop
in sessions where people can come along for a
cup of tea and a chat and ask any questions they
wish around these subjects or others in relation
to emotional wellbeing.
Each month I will cover subject matter relevant
to communities living in rural communities such
as the impact of isolation, who cares for the carer,
recession depression, mindfulness & meditation,
what does counselling mean for me and more.
(If you have a particular subject you would like
me to write about please drop me an email and
I will endeavour to do so).
After moving into a new area I naturally began
to explore community activities within the
local area during the summer and was greatly
impressed by the myriad of activity groups
available in North Norfolk.
From hobbies based, including arts & crafts,
small festivals, lots of car-boot sales, which
I love exploring, music, to gardening and
offering so much for me to engage in.
Of course as a counsellor I also took note of
specialist therapeutic opportunities within
the area and found limited options.
As in much of the country, due to the current
financial situation, funding has been cut out of
such services and rural areas such as Norfolk
have been hit hard, yet there is a substantial
need for such provision especially with the
increase in mental health issues in our fast
moving and highly pressurized society.
Yet the costs and lack of understanding of such
support can be discouraging for many people.

2nd World War fighter pen & shed. Before.

The 2nd World War, Cold War & later landscape
was overgrown and neglected and many of the
buildings had leaking roofs, broken windows
and were in urgent need of repairs.
Working with local communities, Nth Norfolk
and Broadland Councils, the Spirit of Coltishall
Assoc. & Historic England, the County Council
quickly started to reverse the sites decline, and
visitors and people working for businesses at
the newly named Scottow Enterprise Park
today see a huge improvement.
In addition to day-to-day grounds and building
maintenance of the 600-acre site, recent heritage
projects have included detailed surveys and
conservation repairs on a Second World War
fighter pen and its shed and refurbishment of
part of the iconic control tower so it can be
opened up for visitors.

2nd World War fighter pen & shed. After.

County Councillor for Hoveton and Stalham,
Nigel Dixon, said:I am pleased that our work
on the Conservation Area & heritage at former
RAF Coltishall has been recognised by the two
district councils & Historic England, and that
Scottow Enterprise Park has now become an
attractive place for businesses and the local
community. When we think back to what the
site looked like when we bought it two and a
half years ago, it is clear to anyone who goes
there today that its being transformed. There
is obviously still a lot of work to be done, but
we are heading in the right direction and thats
been taken into account in this latest report.
Archaeological sites are on the list of Conservation
Areas & Scheduled Monuments at Risk when
they are recognised as being amongst the most
significant archaeological remains in England.
They range from burial mounds and hillforts
to 20th century industrial and military sites,
providing immense historical depth to the
places and landscapes.
Leader of Norfolk County Council, George
Nobbs, said: The site is really starting to
come back to life which is why we bought
it in the first place to give this much-loved
RAF base a new lease of life.
I visited it only a few days ago and was
impressed with the level of activity there.
Coming off the at risk register not only means
weve made significant progress & that Historic
England thinks that its in good hands, but that
it will also hopefully act as a stimulus for people
to visit and operate at the site.
We now have 14 companies operating at Scottow
Enterprise Park employing 64 people (full time
equivalents) and we hope this number will
steadily grow continuing to boost the
local economy.

This is something I hope to challenge as well

as focusing on ways of nurturing our mental
health to avoid the pitfalls that can lead to
an imbalance in our overall wellbeing.
If you wish to contact me about anything in
this issues article please drop me a line.
Or if you would like me to attend one of your
groups for a discussion please get in touch.
I am easily persuaded with a cup of tea and a
slice of cake or even better a bacon butty!.

The Benefits of
Paraffin Wax
You Dont Need To Suffer

You may already be familiar with paraffin

wax as a luxurious addition to a manicure
or pedicure.
But you may be surprised at what else
paraffin wax can offer, its benefits go
beyond skin-deep!
Paraffin wax is a common option in heat
therapy treatments for people with arthritis
or other rheumatic disorders.
Doctors, Physiotherapists, Podiatrists and
Arthritis specialists, have recommended
Paraffin Wax therapy since the 1960s.
It is one of the most effective ways of
applying heat to reduce the swelling in
muscles, tendons and ligaments.
It can decrease inflammation of joints and
connective tissues, soothing aches and
pain and also improving circulation of
tired and sore muscles plus aiding
with water retention.
Decades later, it became widely used as
a beauty treatment to soften skin.
This petroleum-based product hydrates and
softens skin while coating the skins surface.
It also increases circulation to the skin and
opens pores, which allows the hydrating
elements to penetrate the outer layers
of the skin. This makes it a good
candidate for treating dry skin
& moisturising cuticles.

The treatment is particularly popular in the

winter when people experience seasonal dry
skin, cracked heels & hands allowing for
increased movement and mobility.

How Heated Paraffin Is Applied

Prior to your treatment the area will be

thoroughly cleansed and gently massaged
using appropriate oils or creams.
Because its a soft wax, it melts at a lower
than normal temperature in a controlled
electric heat chamber, this means that
the skin can be coated without causing
burning or blistering.
The warmed wax is applied to the chosen
area from the individual spray cartridges,
eliminating any possible cross contamination
that may possibly occur with other sharing
paraffin bath options. Once the wax has
cooled it will set and can be easily peeled
away leaving you with super soft skin
and all the benefits of above!
Clients can sit in comfort on an electric
hydraulic chair while having treatment.
The treatments cost 20 for feet,
20 for hands and for both 35.
Below are just a few examples of the
letters that I have received:
I am so glad I came to Liz to have wax
treatment on my feet as it has made so
much difference in the few weeks I have
being coming. I suffer with arthritis and
it is heavenly after my treatment, my feet
feel so much better. Jean.

A Young Ventriloquist
..... is touring and, one night, hes doing
a show in a small fishing town.

On 6th October I was invited to join pupils,

their families and friends at North Repps
School for conversation and coffee along
with delicious savouries and sweets.

They happily described the adventure, the very

blustery winds and the bird of preys claws!

I met the pupils from Acorn and Oak Tree

classes some of whom told me how much they
had enjoyed the visit they had made earlier
that week in the schools mini bus to the
bird sanctuary at Cley.

With his dummy on his knee, he starts going

through his usual dumb blonde jokes.
Suddenly, a blonde woman in the fourth row
stands on her chair and starts shouting:
Ive heard enough of your stupid blonde jokes.
What makes you think you can stereotype
blonde women that way?
What does the colour of a womans hair have
to do with her worth as a human being?
Its men like you who keep women like me
from being respected at work and in the
community, and from reaching our full
potential as people.
Its people like you that make others think
that all blondes are dumb!
You and your kind continue to perpetuate
discrimination against, not only blondes,
but women in general... pathetically, all
in the name of humour!
The embarrassed ventriloquist begins to
apologise, but the blonde yells:
You stay out of this! Im talking to that
little s**t on your knee!

The pupils are happy to converse on so many

subjects and I admired their skill at story
telling and their wide vocabulary.
The morning was finished off with one of
their now famous raffles where one lady
was very lucky much to everyones
amusement!
Thank you all at Northrepps School
for a very enjoyable morning.

Seasonal Flu

The best time to have a flu vaccine is in the

autumn so contract your GP practice now
to arrange your vaccination.
Studies have shown that the flu jab does work
and will help prevent you getting the flu.
It wont stop all flu viruses (and it will not protect
against the common cold) and the level of protection may vary between people, so its not a
100% guarantee that youll be flu-free, but if
you do get flu after vaccination its likely to
be milder and shorter-lived than it would
otherwise have been.
There is also evidence to suggest that the flu
jab can reduce your risk of having a stroke.
Over time, protection from the injected flu
vaccine gradually decreases and flu strains
often change.
For this reason new flu vaccines are produced
each year which is why people advised to have
the flu jab need it every year too.
Flu can be more severe in certain people,
such as:
anyone over the age of 65
pregnant women
children and adults with an underlying health
condition (particularly long-term heart or
respiratory disease)
children and adults with weakened
immune systems
Anyone in these risk groups is more likely to
develop potentially serious complications of
flu, such as pneumonia (a lung infection), so
it is recommended that they have a flu
vaccine every year to protect them.
The flu vaccine is given free on the NHS
as an annual injection to:
adults over the age of 18 at risk of flu
(including everyone over 65)
children aged six months to two years
at risk of flu
The flu vaccine is given as an annual
nasal spray to:
children aged two to 17 years at a particular
risk of flu
healthy children aged two, three and four
years old
some year groups at school
Flu can be unpleasant, but if you are otherwise
healthy it will usually clear up on its own within
a couple of weeks.
Influenza (flu) has many symptoms including
fever, tiredness, aches & pains, headache, sore
throat & cough. Most people who are otherwise
fit & well do not need to see a doctor with flu
but DO need to treat the symptoms.

Paracetamol and/or ibuprofen will help the

fever, headache and aches whilst a cough
linctus (ask your local pharmacy for one
suitable for you) will help the cough.
It is important to rest whilst you have flu and
most people end up on the sofa or in bed!
Drink plenty of fluids (you may lose your appetite)
take regular painkillers and be aware that whilst
the acute symptoms of fever etc. resolve in
around a week, the general fatigue associated
with flu often takes another week or two to
resolve completely and you may need some
time off work at this stage.
If you have a fever you are probably infectious
so please avoid coming to the surgery and
spreading the flu, but ask the receptionist
to make you a telephone appointment.
If your symptoms are not resolving within two
weeks of onset or you have a chronic medical
condition it may be worth discussing your

New Smoking Legislation

NNCs Public Health is supporting
new legislation preventing people
smoking in vehicles carrying
anyone under 18.
The new law makes it illegal for
drivers or passengers to light up
in a vehicle in a bid to protect
children from the dangers of
secondhand (passive) smoke.
Secondhand smoke contains over
4,000 chemicals & exposure to it
can lead to an increased risk of
cancer, heart disease, bronchitis
and cot death.
People failing to comply with the
new rules could face a 50 fixed
penalty notice.
Suzanne Meredith, a Consultant
at Public Health at NCC, said:
More than 80% of secondhand
smoke is invisible and odourless
but just because you cant see it
doesnt mean its harmless.

Smoking is the biggest cause of

early death & quitting smoking is
what we want people to do. But
hopefully the new law will make
people think about the health of
others, especially children.
Research shows that many young
passengers feel embarrassed or
worried about asking adults to stop
smoking which is which is why
the rules are an important step
in protecting children from the
harm of secondhand smoke.
The health risks of exposure to
secondhand smoke are well
established and in the UK it
has been against the law to
smoke in vehicles used for
work since July 2007.
According to the British Lung
Foundation, more than 430,000
children are exposed to second
hand smoke in cars each week.
