successfulbrandnameswereAralacinAmericaand
LanitalandMerinovainItaly.
MontgomeryWard'sS/S1942catalogfeaturedclassic
feltstylesof94%newwooland6%caseinfiber.Colors
choiceswereblack,flagred,navy,dustyrose,dusty
blueandbeige.$2.48and$3.98respectively.

Lanitalwasthefirstsuccessfulproteinfiberfrom
milkcasein.AntonioFerettiwasgrantedapatentfor
thisfiberfromtheItaliangovernmentin1935.Itwas
namedLanital[lana=wool+ital=Italy],and
manufacturedbySniaViscosawhichcalledthefabric
afancyrayon.Itlastedintotheearly40sand
supercededbyMerinovawhichwasusedtoblend
withrabbithairintheproductionoffelts.Merinova
wasdiscontinuedinthelate1960s.
Fibersofbothfabricswereverysimilartowooland
couldbedyedbythesameprocesses,andlikewool CrosssectionalviewofLanitalunderamicroscope.
KansasStateAgBulletin300
theywereeasilydamagedbyalkalis.Bothhada
resilientwoolyfeelbutwerenotasstrongandfirmnor
aselasticaswool.Mothswouldnotattackand
shrinkagewasnotasmuchaswoolbutfibers
mildewedeasilywhendamp,aninherent
characteristicofproteinfibersasnotedearlier.

Aralac
Apatentwasgrantedin1937totheUnitedStatesDepartmentofAgricultureformakingacasein
fiberbyasomewhatdifferentmethodthanLanital.AralacwasdevelopedbytheAmerican
ResearchAssociates,ascientificresearchdivisionoftheNationalDairyProductsCorp.
Auseablefiberwasdevelopedandreadyforthemarketin1940,justintimetoserveasawool
substituteduringWWII.ItsnamewasderivedfromARA=AmericanResearchAssociates+lac=
Latinformilk.
Aralacwasblendedwithrabbitfurinmakingfelthatsandwithwool,mohair,rayonandcottonin
varyingproportionsforfabricsandgarments.Althoughclothinginthisfiberwasavailableaslateas
1947,theimpactofmanmadefibersfollowingthewarcausedthedemiseofthisfiberin1948asit
couldnotcompetewiththelowpriceofnewsynthetics.Pluswhendamp,thisfabricsmelledlike
sourmilk,causingmanyconsumercomplaints,aquitecommon,familiarailmentwithinthecasein
family.

R53
appearedaround1941Rforresearchand53indicatingitwasthe53rdfibertestedinasearchfora
fiberwhichwassuitabletomanufacturefelthats.ThisfiberwasfinerthanAralacandwasusedto
blendwithrabbitfurinmakingfeltforhats.Littleinformationisavailable.Itwaslistedbythisname
aslateas1953butseemstohavedisappeared.Possiblythefibermighthavebeenrenamedor
absorbedbyMerinovaorfailedtosurviveasacompetitor.

CaslenwasatrademarkofPlasticProducts,adivisionofRubberset.Itwasdevelopedasacurled
andresilientreplacementforhorsehairinupholstery.Itappearedonthemarketinthelate1940s
andaccordingtoglossarylistings,wasoffmarketbytheearly60s.AnotherbrandfromGreat
BritainwasFibrolane,discontinuedin1965.
